Depressing but Thought Provoking Allegory
28 May 2023
The acting is just great. I would have liked a bit more background character development. The scenery is awesome. But as a warning, as I'm sure everyone knows, the movie is GRISLY. That said, I have to compare the circumstances in the movie to having a friend that voted for the Orange Clown. Yeah I would cut off every finger on my hand (preferably their hands) if I ever had to see or talk to them again. So it is very depressing because just like Colin Farrell's character, those types of people, they drank that brain destroying juice and are uneducated, don't read books, or can't play a musical instrument, and they are incapable of critical thinking or being empathetic except to maybe a donkey. So maybe they should switch parties. So there you go. It's an allegory folks. But p.s. To the Director. Why can't people in movies use suitcases that are actually hard to carry? When Colin Farrell's sister leaves with her suitcase it is just swinging in the wind. And after such details as to the looks of the mutilations. That is #10 of my all time types of movie fails.

That Girl: Hearing Today, Gone Tomorrow (1969)
Season 4, Episode 6
1/10
So Bad I Want to Toss My Cookies
3 May 2023
I usually liked That Girl with the frolicking gal Marlo Thomas and Ted B.however this episode is the coffin nail on the series. Ann has a cold but wants, as the usual plot line goes, to get an acting job to be in a commercial. Trouble is that she has a cold. So after taking some "cold medicine" she becomes drunk then deaf (!) and then the most stupid, irritating broad you've ever witnessed. If I had been her boyfriend I would have further sedated her to go drown her in the tub. WRETCHED! It's too bad Thomas couldn't have been given the freedom to be more intelligent in her performance. Really about the worst sitcom episode ever! And I have watched A LOT!

A GEM, STELLAR PERFORMANCES!!! READ REVIEW!!
26 August 2022
I can't believe I had never seen this movie. Jack Fisk directs his first movie with his spouse starring (Sissy Spacek). An exceptional performance by Sissy, Eric Roberts, William Sanderson, Tracey Walter, Sam Shepard (RIP) and R. G. Armstrong (RIP age 95). Also Henry Thomas' first part and he went on to 76 other projects, and the adorable Carey Hollis Jr who steals every scene he's in (almost). Such a cast and story even set in Ms. Spacek's actual hometown. The set designs are just so good, thanks to the director's eye for detail! Both Sissy and Henry were nominated in1981 (Golden Globe and Young Artist respectively). I was hesitant on watching to the end but it was thrilling, almost a precursor to future thrillers. TOP NOTCH MOVIE!!! DON'T WATCH IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE GREAT FILM!!!

EXCELLENT MOVIE!!! CLASS ACT ACTION
26 August 2022
Only a "5th grader" wouldn't like this movie. Maybe the plot was a bit too complicated. We meet femaile assassin Jessica Chastain in the midst of a job. Then comes John Malkovich and Colin Farrell. Eventually the rapper Common comes into the scene. Also Geena Davis and Diana Silvers. Great action and acting!!!! More like a John Wick meets Burn Notice. Very engrossing, never bored. The inter-relationship dynamics with alcohol/gambling/womanizer/narcissistic personality discords are very true to point. I thought the addition of Joan Chen's character was very well acted. Excellent casting. Common as Michael isn't exactly Stella Adler style perfect performance but I thought the movie holds up and the one star reviews are COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS!!#$@ WTF? Are you people what? Amish? One person bots? Who are you lousy people? Seriously! I'm giving is a ten just because it sure as heck doesn't deserve a ONE for crying out loud. EXCELLENT!

LOVE SARA HATE MICHAEL
14 August 2019
This show just does not fit in with it's time slot. I LOVE the VIEW and I loved the CHEW!!!! ON the CHEW, everybody was funny and you got to learn new dishes to cook etc. I do not like Michael Strahan. How many times has he been divorced? I don't know, a football player in this time slot??? Doesn't work. I love Sara. She is perky and sweet. However, as mentioned, this show just does not fit the time slot. WHAT WAS ABC THINKING????????? Obviously they weren't. They have been trying multiple things but be it known, after the View the TV gets turned OFF. Terrible show.. Bring back the CHEW!!!

WE LOVE YOU ABBI AND ILANA!!
21 July 2019
Just love this show! So original, intelligent and totally applicable to today (e.g. dealing with Dumpf). I just wish I could have you two as my best friends in real life, to call up and chat with, hang out with, talk to. At least it is reassuring that in this day and age to laugh as you two unique women stay the course and be funny as hell! My life has had so many similar parallels!!! And then for hilarity read the 1 star reviews for other seasons from the intelligence impaired, who rate Steven Seagal movies the highest. Why are they watching Broad City?! Tooooo much! Dude go read a comic book this show is so way over yr head!!! lol! The whole cast will be missed! Thanks for it all!!!

AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!!!!! SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!
22 May 2018
I actually rented this movie to watch, so did not see in theater, and kinda glad because during the movie I got very riled and upset. Almost as if this was a psychological experience which delved into my every nerve. Didn't know what the movie was about so just sat back and watched. Art imitating life got into argument with partner and turned it off. Next night or perhaps 2 nights later finished watching. Once you get the idea, and I had to google to figure out what the story was, based on the story of Genesis, it started making sense. Jennifer Lawrence is just completely amazing! Same with Javier, Harris, Michelle Pfeifer, Kristin Wiig. Afterward had a complete emotional meltdown. Had partner also watch, which they did, as I did, not really knowing what movie was about, and they had SAME REACTION! SO EMOTIONALLY MOVED! Completely get where Aronofsky is coming from. We feel the same EVERY SINGLE DAY LIVING WITH TRUMP. And complete sadness on what is becoming of the world. Everyone should see this, within the scope of age restriction due to disturbing images. THIS IS NOT A HORROR FILM UNLESS YOU CONSIDER TRUMP IN THE WHITE HOUSE A HORROR FILM. Interesting that younger people rate film higher than older people if you believe rating scales. I think Boomers, the Republican Trump supporter boomers, are just hopeless. And in that sense, I wish Mother! would come and get us all.

Elle (I) (2016)
3/10
Six Rape Scenes, Ridiculous Story Line, Huppert is Awesome!!!
7 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I was really looking forward to seeing Elle, especially since Isabelle Huppert is one of my favorite actresses. Just look at "The Piano Teacher". She is phenomenal! Have to say I did have some reservations reading a review that mentioned one brutal rape scene. OK. I can handle that. Not a fan of violent films but one scene. Really wanted to see it. So that's where it goes wrong and there are multiple things. First of all, you can see the story line. Huppert plays Michelle who is divorced from Richard. They have a son Vincent who is a clueless millennial with a pregnant girlfriend Josie. Michelle calls Josie, the girlfriend, psychotic. Curious since Michelle grew up with a sadistic serial killer father and it is intimated that she helped him with his crimes as a child before he was caught and imprisoned. This has made Michelle something of a celebrity and not in a good way. She has grown up and made a life for herself, married, had child, has real relationships, and runs a very successful video game company with her friend Anna. Anna is married to Richard. Michelle's next door neighbors are Patrick and Rebecca.

The film starts off, yes that's correct, starts off, with the rape of Michelle by a ski masked intruder. She does not call the police but instead takes a bath. Later on she is raped a 2nd time, by the same ski masked intruder. Yes folks, there isn't just one rape scene, there are actually SIX rapes scenes if you include her day dream of killing the rapist during a rape. Sigh. It's a lot of rape scenes. The story plot has a lot of red herrings involving boys who work at the video game company and someone has made a violent video piece of Michelle getting raped by one of the creatures from the game. OK, Seven rape scenes in total if you count that one. Eventually the rapist is exposed, which is her next door neighbor and Michelle and he go on to have what could be questionably called consensual sex. Some other reviewer suggested that this explore how far one would go to fully embrace one's sexuality to the extent of sadomasochism and role-playing. What hogwash. The only thing I got from the film, was that her father was a sadist and killed people. And that coincidentally as an adult she gets involved with her neighbor who is a violent rapist. Ultimately this long, tedious film, saved only by Ms. Huppert's acting, as she is in every single scene, ends with the son coming in and killing the rapist.

It's all very confusing and convoluted. I thought the story could be tweaked a bit better. It seems to me that Michelle sets her son up to interrupt the rape to help him in some way grow up. And that the killing of the rapist, helps her to become a nicer person.

Does that sound like a good movie to you? I found it very disturbing and very long. I would have rather watched it on video. Sorry Paul Verhoeven, but a Michael Haneke you, are, not.

Boring,miscast and poorly directed
26 September 2016
Was actually looking forward to watching this new drama starring Keifer Sutherland but couldn't last over 20 minutes. Very jerky ridiculous "trying to be arty" camera style WAY too distracting, as was the bouncing of Assistant's obviously empty large purse and Sutherland's empty briefcase as well as his bad dyed hair job. Lack of emotion in his wife after Capitol disaster and this actress badly cast though usually like what she has done previously (Natasha). Boring, didn't believe kids reactions, Keifer sleepwalking, don't care about white men military, conspirators, ho hum. A better plot would be following a Snowden type character. Much more interesting than military heavies. On the other hand was quite blown away by first episode of the Exorcist, believable even though about demon possession! Everything done right that DS doesn't. Two thumbs down. Too bad.

Ong How Can You Not Love this Movie????????
3 January 2016
I went in to see "Hateful Eight" with no expectation. Actually my expectation was NOT to like it as I have been really, really disappointed lately with the drivel coming out of Hollywood. HATED "The Martian". In fact I walked out. (Tooo many idiot millennial kids trying to act like they are rocket scientists? Ugh! Such unbelievability). But to me Hateful was completely believable and the details. No spoiler but just one part when they are stepping off the stage coach and the emphasis on the step off of the coach, it was exact! And the costuming! So pure and beautiful. It was all there for me folks. Right off the bat I was grabbed, by the scenery, the score which by the way is Amazing, the cinematography and the actors! Kurt Russell with the coolest handle bar mustache and Jennifer Jason Leigh. So here they are off on their adventure, meeting up with Sam Jackson. The story line was intriguing. Loved it!!! Really not so violent just cartooning violence which I find different, the Tarantino way. 3 hours but time flew by!!!! I think if you are young and stupid, you will not like this movie. Oh and especially if you are morally a racist. (Or amorally?). It does show North vs South during that time period so I also loved that side of depth. In addition to a woman being part of this gang and how she is able to hold up. Lots of Sam Jackson but he really was so great!!!! Best Movie of the Year so far bar none!!!! But please don't go if you are young and stupid. Or old and stupid for that matter.

A Good Thriller to Keep You Guessing to the End!
21 July 2012
I'm not sure how I was recommended this movie as the movie came out in 2008 and we just viewed it in 2012!! And I agree, what's with the low IMDb score, we thought it was excellent!! Too many 10 year old's voting these days? Probably. Well I was very impressed by 1) cinematography and especially the island shots - just a beautiful paradise that the couple returns to for a holiday. And 2) the acting! Thandie Newton is so good in everything she does and Cillian Murphy I've seen from Batman series but couldn't take my eyes off him! As the story goes the tension builds and build, and when Jamie Bell shows up and starts talking contagious fatal world wide virus... what to do? Is he telling the truth, a 1/2 truth? I thought it had nothing in common with Dead Calm. I liked this much better. Much better fleshed out characters and you just really couldn't figure out what was going to happen which I really thought was a breath of fresh air. Movie is recommended if you are looking for a good night of suspense!

Last Tango in Paris meets the Turn of the Screw
19 October 2011
A very underrated, understated film of Marlon's which I found to be psychologically and sexually amazing, not to mention creepy! And this was even before his performance in Last Tango in Paris.

What's going to happen next? How far is the governess going to go? Who is the masochist and who is the sadist? It can almost be called a sexual thriller. And the accent Marlon gives is Scottish/Irish mix. He's not loaded, fully awake and attuned in all his skill.

How many film buffs have missed this performance??? You cannot say you love film and not have seen this. I have to say it's Marlon at his most compelling except for The Godfather.

Fantastic performances by the children, Stephanie Beacham as the governess and Marlon is "Peter Quint". Set in an English Manor; themes include female nudity, children acting out, and sexual fetishes. Could not be made today without MAJOR criticisms and protests. Wow.

Filmed on location and the story is interesting and captivating - to say the least. The ending is not predictable. Hard to find and not shown in the US. Try to find on DVD.

Film Noir of the 1970's
19 October 2011
Wow Margot Kidder and the woman from that TV show, with Tutti and Blair and George Clooney starred for a brief minute. Anyway it all goes down very creepily on this college campus, in a girl's dorm at Christmas, circa 1974 horror film style. Many other subsequent horror films stole the ideas herein.

No disappointments and no telling what's going to happened next - as there are many red herrings.

I love the girls at the college that don't wear bras and it's very apparent(! i.e. tits showing). Those were the days. That and smoking grass and getting obliviously loaded everyday at school.

Plus tackling a very real issue, pregnancy and abortion.

It's all very believable and very scary. I love the ending.

Watch it and you'll see..........

Cry Wolf (1947)
Solid suspense in black and white and with Barbara Stanwyck!
19 October 2011
Recently viewed this on TCM and was captivated. What was going to happen? Why was Barbara Stanwyck sneaking about? Where was her husband? What had happened??

Errol Flynn also stars, and he was good. Don't usually see him in many suspense films that I remember.

Barbara S. was amazing as usual. Believable - and wouldn't want to mess with her - but she's met her match with Flynn.

I thought a very good plot from which I have seen picked up in several other more recent movies. A solid "8" from this reviewer. I think you'll be entertained.

Anyone can relate to this movie.
16 October 2011
We watched this movie with a group of friends. Mainly I was watching to see Bruce Dern, whom I think is phenomenal and whose biography I had just finished reading.

What really surprised me was the beauty and sentiment in this film. Kristen Stewart I have to say was amazing! The story was amazing! Bruce Dern was utterly believable as usual. The direction from Mary Stuart Masterson, though she could have toned down Elizabeth Ashley's acting just a tad, was really wonderful.

We all ended up giving this sweet film a enthusiastic thumbs up. It's about relationships, death of a parent, break up's, hook up's, parent/child relationships and all that goes into life. The Cake Eaters. Have you cake and eat it too.

True Grit (2010)
2/10
How can you say this is not a remake?
28 February 2011
This film is a total remake of the 1969 film starring John Wayne, Kim Darby, Glen Campbell, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper and directed by Henry Hathaway. The Cohens took it and tried to duplicate but it is NOT a better film. I think Hailee Steinfeld did an okay job in True Grit 2010 but she couldn't come close to Kim Darby's performance. Jeff Bridges is OK as Rooster Cogburn but he doesn't come close to the John Wayne performance. Matt Damon is pretty to look at but Glen Campbell did it better. Josh Brolin as Ned Pepper was good but he was absolutely copying the Robert Duvall performance. I submit this film to the cut out rack of the local Walmart. Sorry Cohens but you got this wrong. You should have been completely original and NOT duplicated. It's okay but it is NOT the better film. This does try to be the same movie and it fails because of it. 1969 rules.

Helen (2009)
9/10
Truthful and well acted film- recommended. SPOILERS
18 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Having worked in the mental health field for many years I can tell you this film does an outstanding job both in script, directing and acting with portraying a woman with major depression and suicidality. The performances by Ashley Judd, Goran Visnjic and Lauren Lee Smith (also Alexia Fast) were at least Oscar noteworthy. Why has this film not gotten more attention? And I am surprised by the rather mediocre vote average on this website. Most likely because it is portraying DEPRESSION and BIPOLAR DISORDER in all their worst forms and that isn't easy to watch. It isn't easy to live with nor is it easy to watch the deterioration of people you love.

Ashley Judd does an outstanding job playing Helen, a twice married woman and mother of a teenager daughter who suffers a relapse of her Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Goran plays her lawyer husband who has no knowledge of her previous psychiatric experiences and must watch his wife sink into the abyss.

What I didn't understand were the reactions of Helen's students at the college. They wouldn't have known what was affecting her, it could be cancer so would they have walked out? I think someone would have inquired on her medical condition. Also you cannot terminate someone with a medical problem or can you?

Mental Illness is a subject we don't discuss but with the prognosis that in 10 years it will be the number one common health problem in the world and is the leading cause of disability with Bipolar Disorder are number 6th as leading cause of disability and then you have ADHD, Autism and the Pervasisve Developmental Disorders which affect 1 in 110 children, then you see the responsibility and need for film makers to make these films.

*********SPOILER************** Also portrayed in this film is Ashley Judd's character Helen getting treatment called Electo Convulsive Shock Therapy which is a very real treatment and performed in local hospitals all over the world. What the movie doesn't show and is the really ugly side of Major Depression are those young men and women who chronically try to commit suicide in various ways. I had a patient whose wrists were so heavily scarred from slicing it made me wince to look at them and she could take a light bulb or a jar of cosmetics and break it in a second to slash.

Mediocre and overrated
19 October 2008
This movie is a bit of a curiosity. I'm not surprised that people picking up the DVD expecting to see a horror movie are a little disappointed. Yet, with the provocative product description one might, at least, expect a thriller. This is how the movie was sold in its day and how it continues to be sold. For me, "The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane" has always been an interesting character study--but not one that is that creepy and certainly not in the "horror" genre. Basically fills the need of a middle age pedophile as we get to see Jody (using a body double, as that of her 14 year old sister) in a nude scene, getting in bed with her best friend. I thought the performances were self conscious and the believability of the film to be ridiculous. Could be remade to be much more creepy, much more believable and actually a HORROR picture. As in my view this film has none of the above.

Historical thriller with beautiful location shots. Religious right won't see it but they can eat poo.
13 June 2006
It's the best movie I've seen this year! My best friend wouldn't go see it, I guess her minister said it's the work of the devil, but it just helped to show me I don't need narrow minded drips like her as friends. Rich historical detail about the development of Christianity and the various groups at odds with each other along the way. I love getting a history lesson and learning more in addition to the fantastic location shots including for example scenes inside the Louvre, Westminister and Temple church. Tom Hanks is outstanding as well as Audrey Tautou, Paul Bettany, (Gandolf)Ian McKellan, Jean Reno and Alfred Molina. Also really enjoyed the small part played by Jürgen Prochnow. A NOT TO BE MISSED summer thriller! 10, 10, 10, 10, 10.

Ugh, Eastwood forever Bronco Billy.
17 February 2005
Please, please, please Clint Eastwood - go ahead and play piano or make movies about Charlie Parker, but enough with the stupid movies. Case in point, Million Dollar Baby which like Mystic River is overrated junk. Who are the idiots that suck up this crap? Bronco Billy meets boxer meets mystic river surprise ending schlock. You guys watch TOO MUCH REALITY TV. Turn on TCM once in awhile and learn about art and cinema and real film making (e.g. Seven Samuri, Doctor Zhivago). Is it because Clint smokes cigars and was in spaghetti westerns that people hold him on this ridiculous pedestal? I suppose because he proves that he can read a book, talk to actors, and contains his drivel. I certainly hope the Academy has enough sense to bypass it for any gag best picture award! Ick, Double Ick, Get Me Out of This Theater I Can't Take This Crap Anymore.

Flawed Ending- Eastwood Overrated
8 January 2004
I have read most of the comments on this movie and I love the indepth discussions on the meaning of the film. The performances were good, but as one comment stated they ultimately seemed "TVish". I have to say I hated the ending and I think Eastwood copped out. From what I've heard from people who read the book, the true ending from the novel would have been MUCH better and would have given a more realistic ending to the film. That's my complaint; the ending is flawed and it made the whole film totally suck.

BEST PICTURE 2004!!!
8 January 2004
Absolutely the best film seen all year. I had thought, up to last week, that best picture Oscar would go to Seabiscuit, but after seeing Cold Mountain, I could find NO FLAWS (and that's really hard for this moviegoer)!!!. NO special effects to speak up, just an incredible story, incredible screenplay, EXCELLENT acting from everyone, riveting characters, GREAT cinematography, music, location...... Absolutely this film should win Best Picture and Zelweger should finally get her Oscar for Best Actress!!! Also I would love to see Phillip Seymour Hoffman get an Academy Award. If you like him, check out "Love Liza", another great performance.

Mystic River (2003)
4/10
What was this movie about....really.
7 November 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Gosh darn I keep thinking about Mystic River. I left the theater yesterday and thought "THIS STINKS". But I've had time to mull it over and I think I've figured it out. The movie is very existentialist which I actually studied alittle once upon a time in college. **SPOILERS** You have Dave who makes the "choice" to get into the car with the sexual abusers. They did not force him, he did have a choice. He becomes a victim. He marries a woman who ultimately becomes a victim....Again it is her choice! Why else would the woman who has been married to this man all these years just go on and blab "my husband is a murderer". What did she think would happen considering the history of the "Savage" brothers??? Laura Linney's character at the end "you can take over the town" she says to her husband, after he has committed murder of a friend who was there for them after the death of their daughter! It's just too farcical unless you understand the theory of existentialism and this movie showing by example. Jimmy (Sean Pean) is a criminal by his own choice and indeed continues that choice when he murders Dave. Sean, (James Bacon) is an observer..... He observes Dave, he observed the 911 call, he observed and not participated in his marriage. The PROBLEM I have with the movie, is how jovial Penn and Bacon became at the parade. I don't think this would have fit from the book. And if Penn hated the Harris boys so much, why would he send them $500 every month? Wouldn't his wife have insisted he give the money to them? It just can't be understood by actual human nature, it's unbelievable, but looking at their actions purely philosophically I guess you can appreciate the movie.

Existentialism is an interesting belief. I had a teacher that was a pure existentialist. It basically says you have the life you have by your choices. Websters says: it is a theory which stresses the individual's responsibility for making himself what he is. Mystic River is an example of this.... it's not just a 2 dimensional story line and in that sense I give it & Eastwood kudos. Sean Penn was VERY GOOD, however just a few times especially during the murder scene abit too unbelievable. Everyone else was just great. I just have a real problem with the ending. Bacon gives Penn a shoot you gesture? What the heck is that about. Again a real problem with the ending. Any comments? Guess I'll have to real the book. 8 stars out of 10. (Sorry Clint, Seabiscuit will win Best Picture by a nose!)

3 November 2003
Just happened to catch this movie on TCM during the week before Halloween and is it a thriller! Robert Montgomery plays just the creepiest guy !!! There is a scene in this movie that was stolen by a more famous movie - "Seven" if you know what I mean. GREAT performances, GREAT psychological drama, I HIGHLY recommend.
