Black Hollywood (1984)
Tremedously moving and educational piece on the Black struggle in Hollywood
Over twenty-five years ago and most of this is still true. The formula for Black success in Hollywood is our own financing, producing, writing, publicists. Today Tyler Perry stands as king and has shown us how to do it. Unfortunately his product is closer to Amos and Andy then Boomerang. Getting into the business seems to require that the actor meet the audiences stereotypical idea of who they think Black people are and what actions they believe a Black person would take. All based on their narrow experience. Audiences today includes young people of every culture and they go see all types of film. Let's give the movie audience a variety of stories with directors like Robert Townsend, Bill Duke, John Singleton, Spike Lee, F. Gary Gray, Lee Daniels and Antoine Fuqua, The Hughes Brothers and more to come. I can't wait.
