The Village (2004)
One of the best films ever made.
It is a joy and a privilege to be living in a time when advancements in technology allow us to witness such an exquisite welding together of visual, sonic, and literary art as can be found in M. Night Shyamalan's most recent film The Village. The evening my sister, brother and I went to the theatre to see it, we were completely mesmerized--from the moment the music began until the very last credit disappeared from the screen.
Many people do not presently appreciate the brilliance of the film, but I believe, in time, more and more will come to realize what a masterpiece it really is. It was made for an intelligent, thinking audience, but was marketed for a grim and gore seeking audience. The unfortunate result was that many of the thinkers avoided seeing it because they aren't usually interested in gore, and the horror fiends hated it because there wasn't any.
The film contains breathtaking music and cinematography, and excellent dialogue. The casting and acting is flawless. The characters develop very well throughout, and the storyline is surprisingly fresh and original. The Village belongs with other mystery, thriller, romance, dramas such as Vertigo. M. Night is showing himself to be in the line of Hitchcock, only better--if that's possible.
Charlotte Gray (2001)
This is an excellent film.
I really don't understand what all these dungful reviews are about. This film is positively superb. The cinematography is gorgeous, the music wonderful, the casting and acting--perfect, and the screenplay and plot--very very good.
(Possible Spoilers) The characters developed very well, and the ultimate romance of the movie was cleverly thought out. The 'initial' romance felt a little rushed to me, but I would not say it was unbelievable. It is not hard to imagine how relationships might develop quicker than normal under desperate circumstances.
I intend to own this DVD and watch it again and again. Cate Blanchett and costars--you all did a fine job! Thank you for sharing your gifts with us.
Pure Luck (1991)
This Film Must Come to DVD!!!
I don't know what all the negative comments are about. This film is absolutely superb fun. It has been my family's favorite comedy for years. We've got more funny lines from this film than any other.
This is Martin Short at his best. He plays the part to perfection. His facial expressions, body movements, and vocal intonations are exactly what this character needed. I'd like to see all these negative people do better!
Danny Glover is excellent as well. The perfect complement to Short. I can't wait to add Pure Luck to my DVD collection. If anyone knows of an on-line petition for getting this movie to DVD, please let me know!! I'm there.
Jane Eyre (1983)
Simply put, superb!
What a story, and what a way to tell it. My goodness. There's something about the slightly unpolished cinematography of this film that I find positively delightful. Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke deliver heart stopping performances. This baby better come out on DVD, or I shall be very sad! If anyone knows of any petition boards for getting it to DVD, please let me know!!!!!
