Catch .44 (2011)
triumph of style over substance
This movie has a lot of style but very little substance. Right from the word go it is obvious that the director is shooting for a Tarentino esque feel, the score and use of flashbacks all kept reminding me of pulp-fiction. One scene early in the truck-stop when the protagonists whip out their guns and start a hold-up was so similar to the diner scene in pulp fiction as to almost be plagiarism.
Unfortunately that was where all similarities ended to Pulp-Fictiion ended. The story was almost non-existent, the characters were poorly developed and one dimensional. All in all this is the type of movie which you watch but then almost instantly forget. Just another of the endless supply of poorly conceived, nothing movies Hollywood seems to churn out, fated to gather dust in the discount bin of the local DVD store. Forrest Whitaker, I am disappointed.
Beat the World (2011)
hip hop flop
This movie completely surpassed my expectations.... as to how bad it would be. I was expecting the terrible acting. I was expecting a nearly non-existent story with more holes than a fine swiss cheese. Unfortunately I was also expecting some jaw-dropping dance moves, which is ultimately the only reason anyone would put themselves through a movie like this. However in this respect the movie totally failed. The dancing is almost completely uninspiring. I have recently been watching the TV show "Americas best dance crew", which is the only reason I watched Beat the World, but in comparison the dancing in the movie is just Lame, with a capital L. I feel violated.
