Ninja Vengeance (1993)
Red letter media destroyed it with a cinder block...
The on-line comedy review company - Red letter media watched this film with a group of people and found it so bad that it wasn't even funny. I then managed to find the film and watch it myself and I'm afraid I must concur. The story is supposedly about a ninja fighting members of the KKK, which sounds really hilariously awesome. The one thing is though - that it isn't in the slightest cool at all. It's just him running away a lot. And then he gets beaten up numerous times and then the girl shoots someone with a shotgun. He's not really a ninja at all. It only shows he is one in flashbacks. Redlettermedia after watching it, dropped a cinder block on it and smashed it to pieces. I wish I could have done the same. I think that's all I have to say...
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
Not quite a masterpiece, but still spectacular and definitely on par with Fellowship!
Just watched it in Bath and loved it!...I was the one with the wooden sword any Bath residents reading this. Anyway, the LOTR trilogy are my favourite films and I've read and loved the Hobbit novel. So yes...expectations were high going in, and expectations were on large met with ease and awesome results.
Yes, many of the problems the reviewers say are true; the story is slow at first, it suffers from minor side story bloat and a few of the special effects are silly and cartoony. But I promise you this, these things are minor and you will not notice them as this beautiful world and exciting story come to life before your eyes.
I watched the film in normal 2D, so I can't comment on the frame rate and such, but it all looked spectacular from what I watched.
It was fun, exciting, tense, interesting and downright hilarious at some points. Many times the cinema burst out with laughter. The bits of the book that needed straight adapting were beautifully adapted and changes were made when necessary. I pretty much universally loved Jackson's changes. The Riddles in the dark was AWESOME!!! Perfection!
Gollum was perfect! Somehow hilarious, terrifying and sad all at the same time. Freeman is Bilbo! End of story. The actor Martin Freeman has to be a cover up. It is Bilbo Baggins doing an amazing job playing Watson, Arthur Dent and Tim. Gandalf was just as great as in LOTR, if not better. Out of the 13 dwarfs we only really get to know Thorin, Balin, Bofer, Fili and Kili. Which is annoying because they are all great. More Dwarfs Jackson! Armitage plays the dark, brooding and yet brave and inspiring Thorin with perfection.
What more is there to say: Amazing acting, writing, directing, scenery, special effects and music (the misty mountains song - wow, I had shivers.) What the hell some of the critics are on I don't know. Not as good as Two towers and Return in my opinion, but it is the first film and it is pretty much on level with Fellowship. Watch it!!! :)
Game of Thrones: Valar Morghulis (2012)
A 10 star ending to a 9 star season.
This is a review for both the season and finale.
First, the latter. This episode, was spectacular. Dropping the single event style of last weeks - battle of blackwater, the show returns to its many storyline style. Season 2 story arks such as Jon's, theon's, Dany's, Tyrion's and Arya's are completed and the stage is set for story's such as Sansa's, Jaime's, Robb's and Bran's to become more interesting in season 3.
Individual scenes; well of course the final cliffhanger (zombie apocalypse scene) was amazing, I loved the scene between littlefinger and Sansa in the throne room (both Aidan and Sophie are incredible at acting), Alfie Allen's scenes were as always fantastic and also the scene between Tyrion and Shae, which almost made me cry. Scenes that they could have done better were the surrounding and burning of Winterfell; which they didn't explain well at all. That it was actually Ramsay Bolton who burned in and not the Greyjoys. The house of the undying, could have been better though it was better than i thought. Should have had more foreshadowing - as it did in the book.
Stand out performances include, Alfie Allen and his amazing speech, John Bradley's fear in the white walker scene and Emilia Clarke for finally showing her true awesomeness that we haven't seen such the season 1 finale - when she locked her traitor handmaid in that room, I got chills.
Rightio! Season 2 has been all in all, a slightly weaker season than the first, though this probably should have been predicted as its based upon Clash of Kings which is basically the build up to book 3, book, and is widely considered to be the second weakest after Feast. That said, it was still awesome. Tyrion's kings landing scenes were brilliant, As well as Theon's greyjoy scenes and finally Arya and jaqen, Arya and Tywin...well Arya and everyone. :P
Stand out scenes, include that awesome scene at the end of Blackwater - flashing between Cersei telling Tommen the story and Tyrion blacking out as his father rides in...actually scrap that, the whole of Blackwater! Also Theon being rejected by his father, burning the letter and then getting baptised and Jaime's amazing Honour and vows conversation with Catelyn.
Stand out acting this season from Alfie Allen as Theon, Sophie turner as Sansa, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion, Jack Gleeson as Joffrey and Maisey Williams as Arya. The only reasons this season fell down compared to the last is occasions of not giving all the info in the writing which confused the new viewers, less action, minus Blackwater of course and occasions where Dan and Dave deviated from the source material and it didn't pay off. The prime example of this is Jon Snow's story which I think is stronger in the books.
In conclusion though, these are only little niggles, this season is fantastic. Fantastic writing, storytelling, acting, scenery, cgi, battles and character development. A must watch for those who haven't. Season 1 - 10/10 season 2 - 9/10 season 3 - will undoubtedly rise back to 10 as it is based upon the strongest book in the series - storm of swords. Thanks for reading, hope this is useful. x
Game of Thrones: The Ghost of Harrenhal (2012)
As in the first series with 'the wolf and the lion', the story heats up in episode 5!
After the somewhat weak episode last week, It looked like episode 3; what is dead may never die, would be the the strongest episode of the first half of the season. However the ghost of Harrenhal proves that wrong - covering every storyline except Robb and Jaime's and greatly pushing the plot forward. The Jaqen three death scenes were fantastic, as were the Tyrion kings landing scenes. The only problems i can find with it is that Renly's death was not as shocking as in the books and the tickler died instead of wheeze - cutting out his awesome death scene in book 3. This is tiny nit picking though. The story was exciting, the politics was interesting and the hints of what is to come make as always the wait to next week excruciating. Again the acting was absolutely phenomenal from everyone involved. The gold stars go this week to Jerome Flynn, Tom Wlaschiha and Gwendoline Christie as Bronn, Jaqen and Brienne who all seem like they've made the characters literally jump out of the book into reality. The stage has been set up for everything to kick-off in the second half of the season. An exciting end to the first half to the second season!
