The Ark (2023)
Science Fiction Without Science
This is the dumbest SciFi show that I have ever seen. It is devoid of any kind of science and the plot holes are big enough to fly Ark1 through. Combined with a non plausible story line, mediocre acting and cardboard characters, it is simply horrible. There is very little chemistry between the cast. And yet it was renewed. I can think of a lot of other shows more worthy of renewal but were not.
I will say that as horrible as this show is, it is watchable. You just have to turn off your brain to do it. If this show goes beyond the second season, I will be amazed. IDK what the audience demographics are, which is worrying.
Orazi e Curiazi (1961)
Horrible
Murphy was too old and overweight for this movie. He looked like he was going to drop over dead.
There really is not any saving grace to this film. Bad Plot, bad acting, bad visual effects. The battle scenes were particularity bad. No historic accuracy at all.
The love plots, well, they were horrible too. They made no sense and there was no emotional connection that made any sense.
I am not sure where this was filmed, but it looked more like a Western in ancient costumes.
I will say, that the best part of the movie is where it says "The End". It was a joyous relief that this tragedy of a film had come to an end.
Black Sails (2014)
Well Done
I can't find any real fault with the series, it was incredibly well done.
The show is pretty fast past, has good script, good actors and visual effects. It seems to be authentic enough to draw you in. It has a very good plot and the script writing is great.
The characters are pretty awesome and it is great watching them progress (or die) during the run of the show.
There does seem to be some plot holes, but they are minor and you may not notice them. I am on my second viewing, so they seem more apparent than at first.
I enjoyed the show from beginning to end and recommend it for any mature audience. I mention mature as there is a certain amount of adult material.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Not Bad
There are some real pluses and minuses to this series.
On the minus side, season 1 starts very slowly. There is a lot of character and plot development that sets things up, but a lot of it could have been edited out to make things move faster and be more engaging.
On the plus side, it has good characters, mostly good actors, a decent plot, wonderful CGI, and seems faithful to LoTR. A couple of the races are very well done, though I cannot say I like the treatment of the Elves. They are mostly two dimensional and lack any kind of charisma.
I don't think it was much of a plot twist to find out who the main bad guy was. It was pretty transparent.
The end of the series does want to make you see the second season. Os this series worth the $1bn projected to be spent on it? Only if subsequent seasons are markedly better.
House of the Dragon (2022)
Redefines Slow and Tranparent
House of the Dragon is not a worthy prequel to Game of Thrones. Just like the latter part of Game of Thrones, all of Season 1 of House of the Dragon felt like HBO did not want to do the series.
The first 8 episodes are incredibly boring, even more boring than. Amazon's Rings of Power. You keep waiting for something to happen, and when it does, there is no surprise in it. There is almost no real tension, the intrigues are obvious and the acting mundane. There just really is not an actor or character that stands out, there is nobody sympathetic, it is just plain awful.
The CGI effects are often mediocre and are reminiscent of 20 year old tech.
If you have watched GoT, then you already know who the survivors can't be. That really whittles down the surprises.
At least opening credit scene is probably going to improve. It can't be worse.
See (2019)
Wow!
What a body count! Blood and body parts everywhere. Great acting! Great characters! The entire cast is pretty darn good.
Copious amounts of action! Fast paced, does not lull you to sleep.
The queen is just tremendously pure evil, just awesome! I don't know where they dug her up, but the actress plays a really good psycho.
Jason Momoa did a really great job, a true action hero.
Filmed in beautiful British Columbia, it is a visual treat.
A really great dystopian tale. It is original and gripping! It is believable to an extent, not perfect, but pretty darn good.
I highly recommend this series for those into this type of show.
The Lost City (2022)
Horrible
Sandra Bullock is old enough to be a grandmother. She was way too old for the part.
Bad plot, bad acting, bad script.... It was like watching a slow moving train wreck.
Grey Wolf: Hitler's Escape to Argentina (2012)
A 5 Alarm Dumster Fire
This movie is so bad, it should serve as a warning to other film makers on how NOT to do a movie. They could have at least had actors that looked somewhat like the historical figures, and it was very nice to see Hitler chowing down on chicken. They also mentioned sausages and other meat.
A truly bad movie.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
To say the series is horrible would be an understatement
Horrible acting, horrible script, horrible plot..... this series should never have been made. A no name cast trudging along in a very slow moving venue with very bad visual effects.
It is so entirely awful, I felt like I needed to be on a suicide watch while viewing it.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
Horrible
Although it had funny moments, the movie was truly awful. I could not wait for it to end. Woody Harrelson was a plus, his girlfriend was terrible. It was a B movie throughout.
Greenland (2020)
Forget Science and Physics
I liked the action, it was entertaining.
I am wondering how the comet can strike both in the daytime and nighttime in the same locations? If you are being struck during the day, at night your location has rotated away from the comet.
The movie was not believable. It fell way short of any kind of reality.
I like the way they traveled from Kentucky to Canada by congested and damaged roads in just a couple of hours.
Then they took a small overloaded plane that could never have made the trip to Greenland to Greenland.
After the "extinction" impact, the air was remarkably clear. There should have been debris in the air for years and the planet should be suffering from something similar to nuclear winter.
Just another big action film without any substance at all.
Black Widow (2021)
It's Adequate
I thought the movie was complete nonsense and quite unbelievable.
The premise is not well explained.
Also, this movie must not be a stand alone. Seems like if you have not religiously watched some other relevant MCU movie, the plot is almost meaningless.
Not much acting involved, it is almost all stunts and visual effects. I have never seen something take as long to fall to the ground as the Red Room, which was supposedly well hidden because it was in the sky...makes perfect sense.
If you have to see this movie, you should pay as little as possible to do so.
Away (2020)
A Real Stinker
While the space scenes and crew interaction are enjoyable, there is not much too it. Even worse is the lame subplots on Earth. They add nothing and just take up time and space.
There is also a huge technical goof. Communications between the ship and earth are simultaneous and they can even call people's cell phones. They also catch fire in a bag of water. I found that pretty absurd.
Spacewalks without jet packs and long tethers. That was a new one when they tried to fix a solar array. Apparently, the force of snapping a cable back into place causes you to violently fly backwards and lose consciousness.
Lack of good plot, meaningless sub plots, weak drama, weak science fiction....this show is a real stinker. Even Flash Gordon from the 1930s was better.
Alexander (2004)
Just Horrible
I just watched the Ultimate Cut, which is so long, you could have raised a family during it.
Where do I start? First off Colin Farrel was ill cast as the lead. The supporting cast contained better actors with more screen presence (though they were under used). Colin came off like a wimp with angst. I halfway expected so see Alexander drinking a strawberry daiquiri and resting on soft buffalo firs at some point. Orlando Bloom comes across as more manly in his movies than Farrel does in this one. That is saying something. Angelina Jolie added nothing to the movie, that part could have been done by anyone.
There are exactly two battle scenes that essentially bracket the movie ends. Both are so inaccurate, I can't believe they bothered with them at all. Phalanxes walking about with spears raised in the first battle that degenerates into a general melee. Yeah, that is exactly like they fought, not. The second battle, well the spears were firs long and mysterious were short when battling elephants, and once again a general melee. You would never guess that Alexander was the victor of the battle and that king Porus became an ally.
Roxana was supposed to be the most beautiful woman in Asia. Whoever picked the woman to play that part either was blind or has bad judgement. Nothing wrong with how she played the character, it is just that she is not attractive. Alexander was supposedly smitten with her, but the movie did not show that nor any real reason for them to be together except to fill up time and space.
Perhaps the fault lies with the director. He has never made a movie that was not weird, and this one was definitely weird AND so boring I wanted to poke out my eyes.
Assassin 33 A.D. (2020)
Worth A Look
This is an interesting movie on several levels. Time travel with multiple time lines spawning, as well as trying to fix them, it pretty standard. What is not standard is the over arching religious purpose where you see the hand of God in the final outcome. You have anti Christians, Christians and non believers all playing a role in this Sci Fi drama. I think the interesting mix of Sci Fi and religion in this movie makes it watchable and entertaining.
The acting is OK, nobody of note on board, but the roles are played competently. The modern sets and special effects are satisfactory. I think the movie suffers when it goes into the past. The past has somewhat disappointing costumes and sets. But, it still gets the story across.
A big budget production this is not. But, they got a lot of mileage out of what they had to work with and I think in the end you have a very watchable movie that will make you feel good at the end.
