Waterworld (1995)
Destroyed Costner's career as a rising star.
Early in the movie, Costner's character says that it's okay to share a women with the man he runs across. Ugh. This idea opens most women and should have been most men. Kostner could have demanded the line be changed. But he didn't. Movie actors need to be very careful about the roles they take.
Dante's Peak (1997)
The worst movie of all time
I usually like disaster films such as Earthquake, Asteroid, and Volcano, but this film is a turkey. I found the sound track to be loud, screeching, and annoying, making it difficult to hear the dialog without being overwhelmed by the volume of the sound. Pierce Brosnan as the lead actor is stiff and not believable. With his bumbling leadership in trying to lead a family to safety, this should have been billed as a comedy. The film proceeds from tense situation to tense situation, all of which are brought on by the stupidity of the people involved. At several points during the film, I wished that natural selection would proceed, and put me and the rest of the viewing audience out of our misery.
Be Cool (2005)
Great fun, lotsa laffs.
When I first read all of the bad reviews to this movie, I wasn't interested, but then my 18 year old son suggested we go. I was convinced after learning that "The Rock" was playing in it. To my viewing, The Rock (Duane Johnson) has never done a bad movie. To my surprise, I was tickled silly by the movie. In the first place, the co-star is Uma Therman (very HOT), and Christina Milian (also hot) playing an up and coming diva pop singer. The all-star cast includes John Travolta, Cedric the entertainer, and Danny DeVito. And then there are the laughs. What else can one expect from a Danny DeVito production? It took me a while to realize that this movie is a sequel to "Get Shorty", another of my favorite movies. Although everybody wants to get Short (Chili Palmer), Chili also happens to be the key to making the deals all work. So Chili manages to magically skate through all the guns, the shooting, and the bad guys. Enjoy.
The Hoodlum Saint (1946)
Curl up in front of the fireplace with your lady and a good video
This is an old-time enjoyable movie, the plot keeps moving, with new and interesting events around each turn. The movie is lot like real life, which has setbacks, but eventually things like character and work ethics are what win out in the end. The protagonist, a war veteran, becomes very wealthy by bravado, good fortune, creative thinking, and hard work, only to lose it in the great crash of 1929. And I suppose that the way one's character weathers misfortune is equally important to the one's character in earning it.
This is not the shallow stuff you see in the movie houses of today. Ester Williams and Angela Landsbury are not only great actors, but are also beautiful and great to watch.
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
Edge of your seat suspense, not for the faint hearted.
I really like a film when I don't know what will happen from one minute to the next. This was one of them. While this film could be classified as science fiction it is like the original Star Trek, having more to do with social commentary than science. The film is rated R, for violence, but I think it is a good thing for teen-agers to see so that they can have a better awareness of abuse and its effects. Parts of the movie were very violent, and had serious flashbacks for my friends who have suffered from child abuse, and is not for the faint hearted. My teen-age sons liked the movie very much, but weren't particular satisfied about the ending, nor was I, but this gives even more food for thought.
Bend It Like Beckham (2002)
Refreshing, fast moving
My boys liked this movie too. There were unusual references to foreign (Indian cultures), some intriguing, some incomprehensible. Should keep them wondering for a long time. The photography was beautiful, and the script kept moving -- never a dull moment.
