Der Himmel über Berlin (1987)
This is a brilliant film on many levels
I can only surmise that so many people here gave low marks for this film because there is a huge population of either very young users, who find it very easy to be critical of anything, or frustrated adults who find it fun to pass all the negativity that they can without fear of reprisal due to their supposed anonymity. What they don't understand, they despise. Sad. This is a terrific film and if you're not locked into an MTV or video game world, you will no doubt find this film both beautiful and thought provoking. Peter Falk is wonderful and the way his character sort of breaks the fourth wall (maybe a fifth wall?) is very interesting.
Wow! I am usually accused of being too verbose for my own good, but I am apparently not allowed to submit this with less than ten lines.... and so I vamp, having said all that I cared to say. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie and enjoy the introspection that is bound to follow if you like a good thinking man's/woman's movie.
Cabin 6 (2005)
Beautifully shot and composed
The story is solid if sentimental; it plays a little like a Mormon commercial and successfully manipulates the "warm fuzzies" in the same way. I think the object was to tell a cautionary tale. It's an invitation to look at who you are and where you've been with your partner in life. Exploring the entries in a journal left in "Cabin 6" was an excellent vehicle for this and here it works really well.
The cinematography is gorgeous and every frame looks beautifully composed. The acting and dialogue is also consistently solid. If you're looking for an action picture... look somewhere else, the target here is the heart. Enjoy.
Star Wars: Revelations (2005)
Terrific Job! Well worth viewing. Inspiring.
I thought the cast and crew did a brilliant job and achieved exactly what they've stated was their intent (From their official web site): "The goal has always been to push the limit of independent film making and show what can be done with a dedicated cast/crew... and the affordable solutions in today's market in terms of film and video." Bravo to the whole production.
The story was well thought through and drove the action. Acting was somewhat uneven, but much higher quality by far over most films in a similar budget range. It does support the theory that a film is like a chain and only as strong as its weakest link (e.g. the extras in the delegates party scene? brought the energy down for a short time), but the final analysis is that this is a good short film. Don't miss it.
Happy Hour (1986)
Well then... maybe I misunderstood this film too...
This was an example of some of the worst mugging and all-around bad acting since Plan 9 from Outer Space! The leads actually maintain a straight face throughout to their credit, but the supporting cast (every last one of 'em), are all horrendous! It could have been funny if it had been played a bit more realistically. Then the outrageous behavior shown by the characters' reaction to the "Marshall Beer secret ingredient" would have been hilarious. Oh well... it WAS filmed in 1987 after all.
