Kismat (2011)
Fantastic By Fortune
KISMAT is the first ever daily soap to step forward from YRF Television but unlike it's cousin 'Khotey Sikkey' This show couldn't cross the expected TRP's despite being scheduled in prime time slot. Whatever the finding of fact maybe with the audience, Kismat at the beginning didn't swept off my feet as expected but later it got it's momentum and then there's never been a turning back.
Essentially an adaptation of Jeffery Archer's famous novel ''Kane and Abel'', Viraf Pheroz Patel & Rahul Bagga stars as Aditya Raj Merchant, heir of multi-millionaire Merchant Industries and Kabir Khan, Misfortuned Poor guy-turned-Nawab International owner respectively. Both share a strange Karmic Bond imposed by destiny however when their life cross path, it creates a war of revenge, Power and Prestige which eventually becomes the sole reason of their existence.
Kismat works enormously with a flourishing story which is inherently honest and straight-forward. It has clear message that Not only the poor but also the rich people too confronts discomfort in their lifestyle which results in turbulence in gifted relations. It introduces new characters in the middle of plot every episode which forms all together into a compelling drama. You get to see an autocratic grandmother, dotting parents, Dismayed sister, Always-there-for-you friends forever, a father-figure sidekick, Infidelity afflicted wife, Sister who spend her life in Brothel reluctantly, Radiant-soft-hearted widow-turned-wife, A Casanova brother, An ISI agent Father. Ambitious daughter, Happy-go-lucky son. The relationship between the characters are established leisurely, It's seems to be a straight-out-of-life and succeeds in creating an emotional wallop.
Makers even borrow Masala ingredient like 3-idiots track where a father desires to forward his legacy to his son, who otherwise have his own ambition, doesn't see family business as his cup of tea & Romoe-Juliet track where both Rival families Kids get hitched giving a big blow to their respected father's ego, However, the love story doesn't end tragically.
Any flaws? Yes. The extra marriage affair portion seems out-of-place, and moves on laboringly which falls flat. Also some sequence tends to elicit sympathy like the first few episodes that were high on melodrama. Also what irked me is the portion revolving around Ruksaar's strategy where she uses her daughter as pawn to rule the Nawab internationals which is full of clichés and pale. This abundantly talented actress hams so badly and miscarries the role into a stereotypical vamp as if she has come out straight away from a mind-numbing glycerin manipulative serials. Keeping aside this hiccups, Kismat is refreshing outing and for this credit goes to Screenplay writer Vikram Kapadia & Director Naresh Malhotra for giving us a show full of heart and soul. They transforms an engaging novel into an engaging show without compromising with the basic story which is indeed a great and brave effort.
Kismat would have fall out flat if not had an soulful performances from the Cast. VIRAF PHEROZ PATEL & RAHUL BAGGA turns a winning card with a solid performance, completely sync to the most challenging characters. Rahul had enacted a serious role before in Powder However it's a tough task for Viraf who carved a niche as a chocolate boy as Shiv in Mahi way, so seeing him inculcating traits of the royal character's personality with varieties of emotions and body language too comes up as a dynamic surprise. I can't imagine any other actors playing these challenging role with aplomb like Viraf and Rahul. They are complimented effectively by KHALIDA KHAN & RASIKA DUGGAL respectively, adding more emotional depth to it. Khalida particularly shines in the scene where she discovers her Husband's sudden death. Instead of breaking down and violently crying, she remains silent expressing her grief of loosing her husband and at the same time happiness by seeing a holiday tickets which Aditya booked for her, Even Rasika Duggal isn't far behind, She was exceptional in a scene where she gets to know her husband's infidelity..She knows her husband cheated and killed her trust yet she forgives him just for her daughter sake. KIRENDEEP JOGI is remarkable as the dismayed sister Mrinalini Merchant and sheds the image of endearing and sexy goof in Rishta.com, She metamorphose from a emotionally frustrated into a self-secured lady with ease, She develops a chemistry with RUSHAD RANA which arouses tenderness. JACEQULINE GAREWAL may come across as a typical autocrat, still she is natural and provides some powerful moments, whereas SIDDHANTH KARNICK. in cameo & TANU VIDHAYARTHI looks the characters very well as loving parents of Adityaraj......Special mention should be given to SHIV SUBRAMANIAM for pitching into fine performance as Vishwanathan, Merchant's sidekick
Overall Kismat is enthusiastically different, disturbing, Melodramatic yet so colorful and vibrating show. If you have missed it then You Tube is always the solution. Strongly Recommended !!
Mahi Way (2010)
''An Endearing flawed protagonist''
Tired of Melodramatic Rona-Dhona Glossed Series? Thirsty for different taste? Need some Self-confidence Tonic??? Then tune into Mahi Way!!! A Contemporary representation of 26 year old overweight Mahi Talwar ,played brilliantly by Pushtiie Shakti, A Character with whom we can relate to. Mahi's life is surrounded by Chocolates, Gol Gappas, YRF Love story DVD's, Mills n Boon novel etc & can't think of anything else. She even fails to hit Gym and varieties of Diet, And yes her Typical Punjabi family who always taunt her for being an overweight Miss Nobody by her nagging mother, super-sexy-over smart sister & still gets pampered by her happy-go-lucky Dadi, Best Friends Lady Gabbar ''Roshni'' Played by Monica Khanna & Designer Thakur ''Sid' Played by Mark Parakh'.
Just like others, she too dreams for prince charming but shies away due to her size. Wasn't House enough that she even faces Human-right violation in her TREND MAGAZINE OFFICE where she is agony aunt professionally & writes column for despo type people. One side Her colleague ''Sona'' & ''Mona'' whom Mahi prefers as Kutti-Kamini & rest size-zero obsessed people makes her life a hell while the other side her Boss Ramona Kohli Played by Sharon Prabhakar forgets her Name every now and then. But what makes her to come office is to see her dream Prince Ishaan Singh Ahluwalia Played by Siddhant Karnick whom she encounters everyday in an elevator.
Once in a week with total 25 episodes, MAHI WAY keeps you engaging because it's mired under Smart-script, fresh-blood characters and witty dialogues all over. Layers peels off with every episode & avoids all the conventional cliché's like the ''Priceless'' Climax-Episode where Mahi runaway from her own wedding to eat Burgers in ''Wimpy'', it's so strange-funny-indescribable-yet-so-endearing. Unlike other Glycerine-manipulating series, here you get ''Humor'' in a right way, Mahi handles all the worst nightmares in a comical way which adds novelty. You get to see Nagging mother, supportive father, Bitchy sister, mischievous brother, pampering grand-mom & funny-superb friends, You are able to emphasize with the Characters because their are so real and are genuine throughout. We can enjoy each and every activity they do. The dialogues inspires abundantly & credit goes to 'Anvita Dutt Guptan' for it. Cinematography is top-notch, you feel As if It's a YRF motion picture, Very rare technical brilliance that has arrived in small screen with a numero-unno banner.
The Show is embellished with superior performance from the entire cast who brings fresh-of-blood out of their characters. PUSHTIIE SHAKTI is the lifeline of the show, I am telling this not because she suits the role as per her size but because she infuses true sincerity in the Role of Mahi Talwar which I doubt any body could have. She has a great quality of an actor & can compete with all so-called size zero actors in the industry. VIRAF PATEL & SIDDHANT KARNICK oozes screen presence and acting skills are totally posh....bright discoveries!!! AMRITA RAICHAND is devilishly sweet as Anjali whereas MONICA KHANNA & MARK FAROOKH are credible as ''Roshni'' & ''Sid''. SHARON PRABHAKAR has less footage but is very funny, ADITYA PANDEY too makes an incredible impression as Mahi's hyper-mischief brother. Special Mention for IKHLAQUE KHAN for being the best supportive father whereas Rest actors too are amazing as well.
Overall MAHI WAY is a fun-loving-Mature-Unconventional show to ever come on Indian-screen before. The show has come to an end but don't get disappointed. You can rejoice the energy by viewing the episodes in You-tube anytime. The show has no age & Gender limit. A pure-Unadultrated entertainment.
Khotey Sikkey (2011)
''Dumdaar Badmaash Company''
Khotey Sikkey,is the best show to come out. It even brings down the 14 years old still-running C.I.D & the reason is crystal clear. It delivers what it promises that is entertaining and we all are aware that the banner doesn't shy away from making it's project and it's character a larger-than-life experience.
I will tell you the basic plot where these fascinating characters came into existence. Senior inspector Damodar Deshmukh played by Vikas Kumar, a head-strong, brutally honest cop finds it hard to difficult to solve the cases because of the high-level of obstacles the rich guys add in the path of investigation he can't get a line of why the rich people end up doing crimes on the top of it he doesn't have any access to money-making racket world so one fateful night 5 rich-spoilt brats are caught for committing crime & kept in the same jail. These 5 are :
Mohit Kishenchandani played by Hasan Zaidi arrested for drunk-driving and almost killing his girl-friend Tanya who gets comatose.
Hameer Rizvi played by Puru Chibber, a professional gambler
Uttara Bakshi played by Sukhmani Sadana,a model but isn't supported by her superstar brother to retain his good image....so she resorts to arson to get back to him.
Dilnaaz Shroff played by Dilkhush Reporter uses firearms illegally
Ayush Khetarpal played by Mark Parakh a genius and a professional hacker.
Damodar uses these kids to solve the case of mystery Joker with the condition of granting them bail if they help him out. and here starts the roller-coaster ride of solving urban crime in unorthodox manner and the transition of these 5 kids from rich brats to responsible-spirited loyal to DD, who eventually become their mentor.
First and foremost important golden rule of a thriller film or project is that it should be ''unpredictable'',it should have the ability to make it's viewer think and guess and that's where Khotey Sikkey turns works majorly. It turns the ordinary spectator viewers into participants, it challenges us to use our brain still it surprises with it's unraveling in the concluding part of every episode. Vikram Kapadia, screenplay writer respects the intelligence of the viewers and doesn't take the audience for granted his writing is original, meticulous and crisp and it's helmed perfectly by Jijy Philips and Siddharth Anand Kumar, the direction is taut and crazy yet it keeps you glued to small screen, throws us in the absorbing story itself. First few episodes is illustrated in establishment of the kids to solving crime and how gradually they make a comfortable friendship with each other. Barring two stories, rest are excellently executed. The best story for me was the Novel-inspired murder, College terror attack & CM Murder Conspiracy & also the child-trafficking one excels because it was shot in the real-location of Dharavi slums which is challenging in all aspects.
Much of the show's genius lies in the crackling dialogues by Ishita Moitra which are freshly written, youth-appealing and sometimes rustic, there are so many gems which are hard to pick. There are some share of hiccups, two episodes turned out to be disappointing. Both were executed well, no doubt the Kidnapping case falls short because the performance of main culprit Anita played by Tanu Vidyarthi was weak and failed to make an impression. Her expression and body language couldn't construct an interesting and shocking character as it was expected to be and the second was the Horse Murder case, which seemed to be out-of-place and it concluded in a very hurried manner keeping it's viewer completely flummoxed. Yet these nitpicking doesn't make much difference because Khotey Sikkey is such a delicious dish which needs to be relished more than once. The peppy Title track song is superbly composed by Julius Packiam and the background score complements the tense situation very well.
In the end, it's the characters that emerges as the real heroes, played magnificently by the ensemble cast...even the actors making an special appearance does a great job. HASAN ZAIDI is seen in a full-fledged role after small appearances in banner's two series and he takes full advantage of it by giving a electrifying performance, PURU CHIBBER has charming personality along with it, pitches into a fine performance his sizzling chemistry with Sukhmani is captured beautifully by his innocent flirt. MARK PARAKH surprises as Ayush, He doesn't bring any shade of his previous role in Mahi Way, he's confident and uninhibited. Both the girls SUKHMANI SADANA & DIL KHUSH REPORTER looks gorgeous in every frame, they not only give an Urbanized-instinctive performance but also radiate oomph factor to the show. These five people are indeed endearing. Nevertheless, it's VIKAS KUMAR, Who steals the show with his detailed and controlled performance as Senior Inspector Damodar Deshmukh. Another memorable character. He often reminds me of Morgan Freeman & Nana Patekar thanks to his acting skills & resembling looks respectively. Yet he's terrifically original...and seldom disappoints & most of the finest dialogues are said by him which he delivers perfectly with his volume of eyes alone. He's hugely complimented by ADHYAAY BAKSHI essaying the role of Patil. He's a delight to watch. Amongst the special appearances, NAVIN KAUSHIK, MEHERZAN MAZDA, MANISH CHAUDARY & MICKEY MAKHIJA makes a solid impact.
Overall Khotey Sikkey keeps you on your toes. But as we say, Good thing comes to an end so that It can come back soon as it has left a major impact on the youth which was the main criteria and as the show garnered a decent TRP's. chance are we keep our remote controls locked till season 2 doesn't arrive with a bang ,till then,we can enjoy the show again and again in You-tube. So it's two thumbs up for YRF's Khotey Sikkey, a high octane enthralling thriller.
