Garbage
4 December 2023
If there ever was an award for the most overrated film, this movie would win for sure. All the hype and praise for this film has gone way over my head; I just don't see what others have seen in it. It had absolutely no point, it's disjointed with no direction and a score that absolutely did my head in. All that music was completely unnecessary. I'm sure it will be oscar nominated, but for what, I just don't know. It didn't feel like the film was finished and there was so much more story that just wasn't told, even though the the film was near 2hrs. Apart from some good acting from Charles Melton, this was a complete waste of my time.

Not that great
1 November 2023
This is a massively overrated film.

Supposed to be the best horror film of 2023 so I was really excited to watch it when it was released on Netflix. While the premise is quite interesting and unique, the execution of the film was really quite underwhelming. The scene with Riley really is the best thing about the whole movie and after that, it pretty much went downhill. It became less exciting and thrilling rather than having me of the edge of my seat. It's a cross between Flatliners and Ouija but includes a few clichéd tropes we tend to see in most horror films now (death of a parent, etc). So all in all not that impressed with this, could have went in several different directions bit chose this rather boring outcome.

It's not bad...
7 October 2023
I was expecting this film to be a lot funnier. It isn't easy to do horror comedy and this fell flat in a few places. It was slightly ruined by all the PC references all throughout and it made the movie really aggravating. The main character calls out people for calling others fat, calls out racism, calls out homophobic people, a reporter comments on how strange it is to see men showing emotion....it's all just a bit much. Even Kiernan Shipka couldn't save this. She should have swapped roles with Olivia Holt. Might have been slightly better. Nevertheless I liked the end reveal, and parts of it were funny, but it had way more potential.

It's not bad, but could be so much better
6 September 2023
I'm on the fence about this show.

Firstly there are some really good performances here. The cops, Honey and Molina were brilliantly portrayed, really well done along with the characters Matilda and Oliver. Enjoyed watching them thoroughly.

Secondly, the storyline is very intriguing, but there is far too much going on to follow this properly. Unless there's going to be a second season, the whole storyline with his missing brother was a waste of time. I just didn't see how this fit in. It wasn't even solved, so why have it drive so much of the narrative? It took up so much space, the main story which was much more interesting, became a bit of a mess. They should have spent more energy with the main story and given us more context. It was so vague, that by the end of episode 5, I had 18 questions I'd written down and I couldn't answer any of them. As an audience member you want to engage and solve the crime along with the detective...that's the point of a good murder mystery. You're given clues along the way to solve it. They didn't reveal vital things until about 5 mins before the big reveal and I felt so cheated. It was a good show, but still some of my questions were not answered. It just needed a smoother script, it was a bit all over the place. Definitely had potential to be amazing. The ending was ok but I was expecting something a little more sinister.

Would I recommend? Only if you have nothing else to do.

So boring
5 August 2023
This show had the premise to be a really exciting, engaging and thrilling show. Unfortunately it turned out to be quite the snoozefest.

The main character is one of the most annoying and unlikeable characters I've ever seen on TV, and it's hard to reason and feel sympathy for her.

Instead of a murder mystery it turns into a weird love story and I wasted near 8hrs of my life on this show. I struggled to get through it because I wanted to know who killed her.

The accents are terrible. My main character Clive sounds African when he's supposed to have a Carribbean accent. Don't waste your time with this.

Scream VI (2023)

Fantastic!! Much better than Scream 5
10 March 2023
Usually I'm not a fan of movie franchises that keep going and going, but I have to say, this film was excellent. A major improvement from Scream 5 (even though 5 was really good), and Melissa Barrera really delivered in this film. I was wary about her in the last movie; I wasn't sure she was strong enough to be the new lead, but she totally changed my mind in Scream 6. The acting was so much stronger, the storyline was clever, the scenes more intense, and for the first time in the franchise we're away from Woodsboro which was a breath of fresh air. This killer seemed so much more brutal and ruthless than the the previous killers. Opening scene was similar to the other films and yet very different. There were some really gripping scenes that had me on the edge of my seat, really well done. With this movie you're going to guess the killer, then be proved wrong, guess the killer again, and be proved wrong, guess again and be proved wrong. (But you were probably right the first time). My only reason for not giving a 10 is because when the killer is revealed, it didn't make sense to me that no one knew who this person really was. It doesn't seem possible. Also their motive for the killing was a little weak....it needed to be a slightly stronger motive as this motive has already been done in the franchise. But apart from that, brilliant!

Speak No Evil (2022)

Slow paced, good but annoying film
19 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was a good film that was well acted but massively frustrating to watch, especially as a parent. The pace was good and it kept the intrigue.

Now the problems: Firstly to go and stay at the home of someone you met on holiday....no.

The way they boss your child around...no.

Making you leave your child with someone you don't know, especially when it's a middle aged man....no.

Walking in on you when you're in the shower....no.

Making you pay the bill at a restaurant when they are the ones who invited you for dinner....no.

Bullying their 'son' because he couldn't dance...no.

They had ample opportunities to leave and they chose to stay, and look what happened. Bjorn left his family in the car to go and ask for help that was mere yards away. He knew Patrick was following him and still left his family in the car. Then when Patrick went to pee outside, Bjorn was just staring at the keys in the ignition. Why didn't he hop in the drivers seat and drive off?

Then when Agnes was taken, me as a parent while that door was open would have flung myself out to get my child.

Then to undress and let rocks be thrown at you without putting up a fight...it all just doesn't seem like the actions of normal people. Especially when Patrick and Karin had no weapons or anything.

One thing I didn't understand is why they kidnapped children in the first place. They're not trafficking the children, so what was the point? Just to kill families? They had no motive so that was odd.

Nevertheless a tense watch but ruined with annoying characters. Would have been rated higher if they'd actually put up a fight.

Urban Legend: The Red Room (2022)
Season 1, Episode 1
2/10
What urban legend is this supposed to be?
10 December 2022
I expected a lot more form an Eli Roth program.

The acting really put me off in this episode.

And I'm not exactly sure which urban legend this story is supposed to be based on?

The story was a bit blah, the acting was really below par, the production looked very cheap.

I will probably keep watching it, but I really hope the show will improve a lot because this wasn't a very good opener at all.

It just focused more on the gore than the actual story itself and resembled one of those bad anthology shows from the 1990s.

Maybe if they'd used some known actors it might have been a bit better.....

Missed Opportunity
13 November 2022
While I thought is film was very clever with all the Agatha Christie nods in it, for me it fell a flat in the middle and didn't quite recover. I feel like this should have been a lot funnier than it was. The only characters I felt bringing the comedy in were Saoirse Ronan and David Oyelowo. Not sure how I feel about Sam Rockwell being cast in the lead role, I feel someone else might have done a better job. Murder mystery comedies aren't easy to do, but when films such as Murder By Death and Clue exist, you really have to step up your game in this genre. Unfortunately for me, this film didn't live up to my expectations.

This is NOT a thriller!!!!!
15 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I actually went in thinking this was a mysterious psychological thriller with a twist ending. It tried to disguise itself as a thriller but ended up being quite a boring, miscast drama.

It dragged and dragged but I stayed til the end, hoping there would be some climax at the end, for example, Ani actually knew what the boys were going to do and lied this whole time. Or she had actually orchestrated it. Something along the lines of Apple Tree Yard, but better.

Had I known how this was going to pan out, I never would have watched it, it's just not my kind of thing. The main character isn't likeable, despite what happened to her, and so it makes it difficult to root for her even though she was a victim. I just couldn't resonate with her at all.

Disappointing ending
15 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't want spoilers so I did not read about what had happened to the real family behind this show.

The show started off wonderfully; it was intriguing, a bit creepy, mixed with some dark humour. It really looked like it was going to be really good. And it was for the most part. Lots of twists and turns in the show, lots happening...but unfortunately the last half hour or so were terrible. Once we find out it's not actually Theodora who was behind it, and Karen buys the house, we're like, oh so it was her after all, but it wasn't. We still don't find out who it was because the case (which I read about after I watched the show) was never solved. They never found out who wrote the letters. And I absolutely detest shows and films with no resolution. Makes me feel like I wasted my time watching them.

So as much as I praise Bobby Cannavale's performance in this show, (because he was actually brilliant), along with Noma Dumezweni, I have to take points off for the ending. Would have been an 8 otherwise. But I did enjoy it for the most part. It was interesting, it was engaging. The end just killed it.

Missed the mark
14 October 2022
I'm on the fence with this show.

In some ways it's really interesting and different, but in other ways it drags and drags.

The main character for me is extremely unlikeable which makes it very hard to root for her. She is annoyingly stubborn, and sticks her nose into everything, basically taking over once she arrives at Brightcliff.

Some of the acting is amazing, especially Ruth Codd who isn't even an actress. Her performance really blew me away.

The stories the group tells are actually really interesting and well played out. Their stories have a bigger impact on the audience than the main story itself which I found quite boring and tedious. It's a shame because I was looking forward to this show but I just didn't like it enough. And it ended terribly, which means there will most likely be a season 2 that I will not be watching.

I find Mike's shows a hit or miss. The Haunting of Hill House was really good but Bly Manor and this show haven't been as good. Looking forward to House of Usher though.

One of the most boring films ever
7 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
What an odd film.

The narrative is all over the place, it just doesn't work unfortunately.

Starts off ok with a bit of background into her childhood, and then as she's taken off to an orphanage, it cuts to her as an adult auditioning for movies. Could have included what happened after that and her teenage years, etc. I don't really see what the point of the beginning was then. They could have just started off then with her as an adult and woven in the story about her absent father and crazy mother.

To be honest this was a waste of Ana's talent, because she played the part great..and of all the actresses who've played Marilyn, she gave the best portrayal and the most compatible looks wise. However this story is terribly told and had they just done an actual biopic, it would have been so much better.

Be careful who you bully....
2 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really wasn't sure how this film was going to pan out. I briefly read the synopsis then kind of forgot what it was about when I started watching it.

I thought Aisha Dee was fantastic in this. She embodied the role of the troubled Cecilia really well. And while she may be portrayed as the villain of the movie, I personally don't see her as the villain. I think this one film where you're either going to hate her and pray for her demise, or feel a sympathy for her.

Being bullied as a child has never left her. It's lead her to the job she does. She probably doesn't find it easy to make friends and we don't see her talking to any family or friends; all she has is her followers who she turns to for validation. To know that she is seen and heard and needed. That she is wanted. And this becomes an obsession to her. She puts on this front of being worthy to her followers but she lives in a tiny, messy apartment, drives a yellow car that her best friend always said she wanted; she is very socially awkward and not the person she makes herself out to be. She goes to Emma's engagement party and feels home again, making friends with Emma's new friends.

Until she encounters her old school bully at the hen weekend and Emma's new BFF, Alex. And it's like she's back in school again. The new friends don't know her, they know Alex. And so when Alex makes her hatred for Cecilia apparent, the friends are on Alex's side. Here Cecilia is face to face with bullies again. Even though they don't bully her outright, they tease her behind her back, make hurtful comments and laugh at Alex's snide comments.

I thought it was a great film. My only criticism was the score was annoying. Music playing through 90% of the movie, over the actors which sometimes made the dialogue quite difficult to hear. Not sure what the reasoning for that was but I didn't like it at all. It wasn't necessary to have music in certain points of the film. It ruined the atmosphere.

I enjoyed it. More of a thriller than a horror I'd say, but good.

Humorous watch, but not perfect
1 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This film was riddled with clichés and as it's a comedy horror, I'm not sure if those clichés are deliberate or just horror movie tropes added in.

Some of the dialogue is a bit cheesy, but again I'm not sure if it's deliberate or not.

I think some of the casting could have been better, but I liked the actress who played Bee; I felt her awkward character brought a bit of depth toward it. And the actress who played Alice was hilarious.

Pete Davidson did a good job, I've never seen him act before so I wasn't sure what to expect. His sarcastic humour was believable. The other actresses and actor however were quite subpar.

I was surprised by the ending. I'd guessed everyone and then to find out there actually wasn't even a killer; that was brilliant...a slasher film with no killer. That end line of the film had me in stitches...'I have reception'. The film is a 6 but I added a point for the end. Good watch.

The Invitation (II) (2022)

I enjoyed it!
26 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There have not been very good vampire movies of late. I can't even remember the last one I watched.

The thing about this film is, the trailer gave far too much away. Had it been a little more mysterious, the reveal would have been more of a surprise. Having said that, I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Not all the acting is great and some of the dialogue could do with some polishing. A few twists could have been added.

It lacked a bit of darkness and so it almost plays out like a comedy horror in ways even though I don't think it's supposed to be.

Nevertheless I still enjoyed it. Worth a watch!

He didn't do anything!!!
25 September 2022
Pretty decent film told in real time, I think only made more enjoyable due to Justin Long. He played his character perfectly. This guy who thinks he's suave, looking for a good time, who is still rather awkward when it comes to women.

It's obvious from the title and trailer what's going to happen, so there's not much of a shock factor here or any surprises unfortunately, which would have made it slightly better.

Not overly keen on Kate Bosworth's casting. I actually think they should have swapped Kate's character with the second sister...she was a far better actress. Overall a decent watch but it's pretty predictable.

Would have liked this to be a bit darker
23 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Not a bad film, but it is very reminiscent of the film A Tale of Two Sisters which was later remade as The Uninvited.

With a storyline like this, it leaves you with quite a broad range of possible outcomes. So when the film came to about an hour...I realized what was going on and I was very disappointed as this idea has been done before: The Sixth Sense, The Others, Jacobs Ladder, etc. I was expecting something new and exciting and instead watched a horror trope that's not so surprising anymore.

Nevertheless I enjoyed the film mainly because it was acted so superbly by Nicholas and Cameron Crovetti. What wonderful talents they are. It would have been a very average film without them in it.

Not that bad
19 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A 4 is very harsh!!!!

It wasn't a bad episode, however this should have been like episode 1 or 2. The season should always end with the best episode, and this wasn't it. Episode 1 with the dolls should have been the last episode really. It was probably the most interesting episode with a nice tie-in to the American Horror Story season Coven.

My favourite episodes were Facelift and Necro. Two amazingly acted episodes.

This story was interesting, and the little twist was good but needed a bit more of an oomph. That's what it missing. Not sure Alicia Silverstone was well cast in this role. But anyways... Season 2 has been far superior to season 1. No doubt it will be renewed.

Better than I thought it would be
3 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Not a bad film considering it's a Shudder film. They've yet to release a film that is really good. Their films just sit at average and this one is probably the best I've watched. Yet still not quite good enough.

It's far too obvious who the mystery couple, Tommans Sasha are, so there was no shock factor there. Tom and Sasha were pretty good in their roles. Unfortunately the wife Margo really irritated me. One of the most annoying characters I've ever seen in a film. Rude, ungrateful, abrupt...I was praying for her demise. At the end of the movie when Adam is basically trying to tell her Tom and Sasha have been back in their home, she's not even listening to him. She's not happy with the house, then she's happy with the house....awful person. Film could have been a bit slicker, it just failed to create much of an atmosphere.

Room for improvement
1 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
While I mostly enjoyed this series...there are still a few things wrong with this show. The mystery of what happened 23 years ago keeps the viewer intrigued. All throughout you're just desperate to know what these mamas did that was so bad to make Angela kill herself. Ok, so this show delves into a lot of controversial topics like rape, racism, suicide, drugs, etc....so it didn't need to be shy when coming up with storylines of what the bullies did to Angela. What they did to her was weak. It didn't really balance the story for me. I felt they could have gone a little bit darker there. It's a horror show after all. Give us some horror! Between episodes 1-9 only three people were killed. When the killer was revealed; it was a bit of a cop out for me..that was very disappointing. Having a secret sibling or twin is a horror trope that's been done so many times. They needed a fresh idea. And I felt like the last episode was really rushed. Some of the writing is a bit off and the dialogue quite cringworthy. Like you know people wouldn't talk like that in reality. The acting was mostly good, not perfect but good.

I did like the original PLL tie in with them visiting Rosewood, the bookshop and the mention of Aria and Ezra.

Lots of movie references which I loved. The scene with Angela and her mother was very reminiscent of Carrie. Loved that.

Not sure if this will be renewed but if it is, I'd like brand new characters and a new storyline.

Bitter disappointment...
26 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I know a lot of people didn't like Jordan Peele's second movie, Us; but I thought it was brilliant. I actually prefer it to Get Out. (Just a teeny bit). So I was beyond excited when this movie was announced. Aliens aren't really one of my favourite sub-genres, however if it's done properly, it can be really good. This was not. I'm struggling to put into words what I just watched. The storyline was all over the place. It had an interesting beginning with the dad, then slowed a bit, then picked up, and then went to a weird place which it never came back from. The scariest part of the film was with the children in the barn, and that turned out to be a prank!! The effects weren't very good; the alien creature looked ridiculous. I'm so surprised Jordan Peele wrote this, it was a colossal disaster. I mean, a good story line but a terrible execution. Of all the possibilities you can take with this storyline, Jordan Peele ended up with this.....I don't even know what else to say. Glad I didn't pay money at the cinema for this.

Slow burn thriller that does not thrill
20 August 2022
Quite a few recognisable faces in this show who are all good actors, but this show does nothing to show off their acting talent. Although I must say the lead actress had the same facial expression throughout which was quite annoying.(Deer caught in headlights).

I couldn't even get past the first episode, the narrative was so bad. Very jagged, an awful score which spoiled the atmosphere, and the first episode moved too quickly for my liking. It needed a build-up first, but it delved too quickly into the events. Wasn't able to continue.

Not sure what the point of this film is
19 August 2022
This film was quite weak. It had very flaccid storytelling. There was no point or substance to it. That can be overlooked in comedy at times but it wasn't funny enough to rely on laughs alone. Then it just ended quite abruptly. All in all it was quite a waste of time really. Alison Brie is better than this.
