Mr Bates vs. The Post Office (2024)
Best tv for many months
A superb short series which captured the astonishing story of how the Post Office bullied their own employees into submission. Apparently with great accuracy the story pointed the finger at two of the senior management. An excellent cast with a great script meant that the viewer was both educated and deeply moved.
Two black points I note having done some research. No mention of the then Chairman, who must have had some knowledge of the scandal, and who later moved onto another job - as head of ITV (the makers of the documentary). And why no mention of the Daily Mail who pushed the campaign for justice for many years (which I actually remember).
Brighton (2019)
Just ok
Great cast but not really suited to the movie format. Would be better on the stage.
Bluestone 42 (2013)
Absolutely superb
Simply the best BBC comedy in the modern era.
I have never served in the military, but respect those that have, and I do not
understand the comments about about this not being for those without a
service record.
The ability to draw humour from seemingly tragic stories without resorting
to comic book violence is all too rare nowadays. The writing and acting
was superb, bouncing from slapstick to deep pathos with aplomb.
And from other reviews, the fact that it was so realistic represents another
stunning accolade.
I don't think it ever progressed to BBC 1 did it ? Astonishing when you
compare it to the majority of BBC's other output. Perhaps because the viewer
was required to actually think rather than be told what to think.
Breach (2020)
Awful. Been done many times before since Alien
Willis is surely better than this. Waste of a decent budget.
Fatman (2020)
Some redeeming points but.......
This is a film spawned from the generation of horrendous made for 14 year old boys, crazy budget, superhero films.
I know that movies represent escapism but this is just nonsense. Great performance from Gibson but not good enough
to counter the ridiculous premise.
The Crown (2016)
Is it fiction or fact ?
Needs to decide what it is. Fiction about real people seems to be slanderous to me, although the Royal Family would not go through the unedifying ordeal of litigation would they ? So easy targets. Shameful.
The High Note (2020)
Oh dear
Really disappointing. Music, acting, dialogue all second rate. What a waste of budget.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Terrible
Lacking any of the panache or humour of Suicide Squad this was just a futile collection of unnecessarily violent scenes. Awful
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Best Batman film
Marvellous conclusion to the trilogy and the best Batman film ever made in my opinion.
Les Misérables (2012)
Magic
Not an easy task to take arguably the best stage musical in history
and turn it into a remarkable film. But this is it.
High Society (1956)
Music and cast are amazing
One of the best musicals of all time.
The cast is wonderful and a real feel-good story.
Fever Pitch (1997)
Good watch
Thoroughly enjoyable film, even if you don't like Arsenal !
Any football fan could tap into the emotion.
Jumanji: The Next Level (2019)
Surprisingly entertaining
A really enjoyable romp. I hadn't seen any previous Jumanji's which probably helped.
Great cast.
The Irishman (2019)
2 hours too long
Great cast but a real slog to get through !
De Niro has done so much better.
The Greatest Showman (2017)
Simply Magnificent
Historically inaccurate ? Who cares. A fantastic musical with wonderful songs.
Joker (2019)
Turgid
This film clearly polarises its viewers and I'm afraid I'm in the minority end of that polarisation. It is an over-long self indulgent study of mental illness, which is bizarrely set in a comic book world where we see the groundwork for a future Batman. A very unentertaining couple of hours, although I do acknowledge Phoenix's performance - which became the first time two actors have won an Oscar for playing the same character (Heath Ledger won for his Joker).
