Shiti Hanta (2024)
Can do better!
City Hunter is almost 30 years old. For a new audience, the production could have made a one on one adaptation of the manga and/or anime to get new fans. It wouldn't have hurt and the 90s kids (or earlier) would love it. City Hunter is not that hard to adapt IMO. This movie just becomes another action movie.
Besides Kaori, which they changed a little the background, the main characters are from the source. The story is from the principal arc which is good but the introduction is too long to narrate. For a movie of 1h40 minutes, it should have focused on the characters with some small side missions for the 30 first minutes to know them better. It's a miss from the prod. In the end, we don't know what's xyz and don't even know what is City Hunter which is sad truly. City Hunter should be the light for the city of Tokyo. It should brings hope to the needy. But besides that we just get another action movie which is confusing and boring at time.
City Hunter (2024) has missed the mark to get introduced to new fans. It looks just like a fan service of something that is adaptable to a broader audience, but that tells nothing.
The ending sounds like it's open for new parts. If there are not other parts, then this movie is just a pass. It sometimes is too confusing unless the viewers know already the series.
Run for the Money (2022)
Entertaining show
Show is fun to watch. Battle royal of kinda police and robbers or wolf and sheep that kids play (or used to). The contestants are all famous or celebrities from Youtube to tv show, or music and sport. The participants are competing or rather running from "Hunters" to win a prize money. Weird to find that the prize money is a little $8-35k for famous people (I guess in Japan, celebrities aren't paid that much for their appearances or performances). Anyway, you'll find rooting for courageous candidates and wish other annoying candidates to get caught. The show is also full of suspenses. 4 episodes are easy to watch. However, I wished they didn't cut off all the funny interactions. Hope to see another season. Promising show from Netflix.
A Model Family (2022)
Good k-thriller crime
A lot of betrayal and reversal betrayal in this korean flic drama.
The show does an excellent job in showing two different worlds. The world of organized crimes and the world where regular people live in. Once regular people get into the organized crimes, it is almost impossible to get out of it.
This is also about family drama. No family is perfect but in face of adversity, it shows that the members will not hesitate to work together (even on their own) to keep the family together.
The actions are okay. Characters development are a bit lacking. But not everyone need to become a hero at the end.
It offers a representation of the crimes world and where regular people enter it. Decisions from the characters can be frustrating. Overall, the korean drama is good and can be enjoyed.
Beomjoidosi 2 (2022)
Just joy
It's just a joy watching Ma giving the beating out of the bad guys. This guy looks like One Punch Man where he arrives late, but save the day. Without the hero, every moments of the film where the bad guys are you cannot stop but feel helpless for all those around the bad guy(s). Whether they're good or just thugs, you know they'll die or almost. And when Ma shows up you feel relieved, and just enjoy him beating the bad guys. It's just hilarious!
Even the meanest of the bad guys is like a puppy face to Ma. The film is a great sequel and is better than the first.
Action packed movie where there are no real good guys, just a hero cleaning up the street. I had great joys watching this. Hope you will as well.
Yacha (2022)
Great spy movie
Yaksha is a fast paced movie. Rarely in the movie you will find a slow moment and if any, it's just to explain some situations to the viewer.
It's not the among the bests that exist and not among the worsts. In a lot of the gunfights, seeing how no bullets hit the good guys the movie just becomes comedic. But it stays enjoyable to watch. The acting is just okay. Just watch it if you got nothing else to watch and need a good time.
Please Note that the movie can be sensitive to viewers who are into politics especially Japanese and Koreans. A lot of hates cliché that Japanese hates koreans and koreans hate Japanese more than North Koreans. This movie won't resolve any tensions of the past. So just a warning to any who are into politics.
Beullaekdok (2019)
Life drama
It's one of those k-dramas that hit close to home for whoever know how life is difficult.
A bit unrealistic in a lot of scenes and moments in the story like the introduction. But the drama depicts realistically the period where the Korean society is living in.
A must watch if you've watched My Mister, Misaeng, Prison Playbook, etc.
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)
Resi-dump sewers
At least the first Resident Evil movies tried to be originals and added elements of the games to make the movies look like they were part of the same universe.
This movie is just pure garbage. When in years, no video games has had a great film adaptation ever. This movie doesn't change that. It's just in the line of all those garbage adaptations.
They had everything on hand. Stories, sets, and even some good actors and actresses. But they still messed this up.
It's to ask if any person from the director to the producers have ever played the games besides knowing a bit of Resident Evil backgrounds...
It's watchable for a bit of entertainment but for the fans. It's just a let down.
Kotarou wa Hitorigurashi (2022)
Heartwarming
Some kids do really mature faster than others. It is true that it's heartbreaking to see a kid cannot be a kid. But thanks to his neighbors, Kotaro can live a life close to it. Especially thanks to Karino.
This short anime will bring you joy, make you rethink about what matters in life. The drawing and animation can look cheap. However, the music and story aren't. An anime worth watching.
Teuksong (2022)
Entertaining
That's the Korean movies i like. Action packed with some comedy. The main plot is predictable and it's been visited countless of times. However, anyone watching this is not here for an original story. The movie is just fun to watch. Park So-Dam is really good in this action movie. I rarely see her doing this kind of film. The little kid can be annoying at time but that's what the scenario is calling for.
Get some pop corn ready, you will enjoy it! Worth watching.
Jigeum uri hakgyoneun (2022)
It's good and different from other zombie series.
It's a good show. Sometimes too long. Could have been shorter at about 8 episodes. I found myself just forwarding lot of moments and during that nothing happened. Just people watching into each other eyes. And that's a lot of minutes. Sometimes, i questioned a lot of decisions. But reminded myself these are just a bunch of kids who are supposed to be 15-17 years old. In addition, this is happening in an Asian society so a lot of decision makings are just different from kids who are in a western country.
The Character developments are okay. We see different types so it'll be easy for people to recognize themselves in the kids.
Some comedic moments are added to the show to lighten it. Some scenes are just gore.
The ending leaves space for a part 2.
Overall it's a good show to watch. Not perfect. But good.
Chang jin hu (2021)
A good movie
For most of the west, this movie seems like a propaganda. I wanted to check it for myself, the ending is indeed a propaganda against the west. But I believe that any victims of the west will feel the same as the Chinese if they can win a battle against the Americans. And this will hurt the pride of any Americans, even more pronounced if you support the right wing party(ies). Anyway, just don't watch the last 3-5 minutes and this movie is actually good.
First, the movie is super violent. If you cannot watch people being stabbed and body parts being exposed, this is not a movie for you. In addition, the battles are super long. I like movies about wars to learn history but the battles in this movie are dragging it.
Second, in no way this movie has shown that the Americans were barbaric or monsters. So don't get offended. It actually shows in some scenes that the soldiers just want to go home for the holidays and be with their families.
Finally, the movie is depicting soldiers as heroes, but from my point of view, there are only victims. The sons taken from the loved ones just to amuse a bunch of politicians who want to show off who has a bigger d*ck. It even says in the movie that MacArthur by winning the war he would be in advantage to be the next president. So in some parts, the movie really show us what wars are about.
I believe the movie are missing some parts, it explains very little of the reason of the war which was Korea. If you can get over your patriotism for the USA, then the movie is a good watch. I don't believe it also tells a good story but anyone can learn that this battle had happened and who were the actors.
Ryû to sobakasu no hime (2021)
A fairy tale re-told for the modern age
It's just another anime version of the Beauty and the Beast. Nothing more. You know the story you know the plot. I really truly like the studio. My best movies are "The Boy and the Beast" and "Summer Wars". But "Belle" won't make it to my list of favorites for sure.
In Summer Wars, you knew why they wanted to get rid of virus or they wanted the hero. Because the hero kind of decoded the code for the virus to attack the system. In Belle, why do they want the Beast (dragon)? Because he defeated some other players and they're saying he's cheating? Just bs. Come on you can do better. And they're saying he's ugly? What a joke. In U, other players have even uglier characters. Lol.
Conclusion: It's just okay to watch.
The Door Into Summer (2021)
Just skip
Don't even try to watch unless you like the actor and the main actress pretty faces.
A back in time movie where the story is interesting but rushed into a film that is uninteresting. The film is just one of the stupidest back in time movie you'll ever watch.
This should have been a Netflix series to work properly the story. Instead, this is just a super long movie full of holes and nonsenses.
Here some points:
- going back in the past to save Riko is a noble cause, nothing wrong here. But the fact that when Soichiro and Pete were in the past and met Sato, the dude just believed everything that was said to him. I guess the fact that they made the hero K. O. here allows to skip some scenes and how Pete got Sato to agree.
- the professor Toi accepted the funds for his research for whatever reason. I guess some people will just accept money and don't question anything. Furthermore in the future, it is revealed that he himself funded his research. And that part was not mentioned to him from the past. So how is he supposed to know? While when Soichiro meets him, he said he's funding Toi's research...
- going into cold sleep a 2nd time doesn't make sense. Soichiro from the past is supposed to go into cold sleep. So Soichiro from the future didn't need to go cold sleep again. He could have lived the 30 years peacefully as someone else (to avoid his ex) in the past with Riko, like captain America (one is asleep and one is living his life). But no, he decides to go back to sleep. No one at the clinic question why there are 2 soichiro in the records?. Also wasn't his dream to be an inventor? I guess not...
This goes on and on. The movie is just disappointing. Skip...
Don't Look Up (2021)
Hits so hard to the truth yet hilariously sad!
I actually enjoyed the movie. The movie it jokingly mocking the society we live in. Some people will get offended. Some people will not recognize themselves. But it shows the truth regarding our society we currently live in. The last time, a movie made me feel that way was "Schindler's list". The build up is constant. Super slow at first and just boring at time in the beginning. However towards the end, the movies just makes you cry laughing as it hurts so bad telling the truth.
Social media is dividing the people, the media are just looking for the next news, politicians don't care about the people, and corporations just want to make money.
COVID-19 is there. Climate change is there. No one really cares. Powerful people and names can make the difference. But no. "We are just all gonna die".
I didn't expect this kind of experience before the year end. Thank you Netflix!
The Silent Sea (2021)
It's a good watch. Nothing more.
This a good series . It will keep you entertained and that's it. It's actually better than the last movies of this genre by Hollywood and since Interstellar.
The pace: Thanks there are only 8 episodes. Dragging it to 12 or 16 will be too much boring. Though this could have been shorter like 5 episodes max.
Plot: the story isn't bad. It's interesting and original. If you are able to ignore the fact that people supposed to be smart have a limited IQ, you can spend a good time watching this.
Character development: the main characters' stories are visited at the beginning of all the episodes. This is a good idea. Only a few times, there will be flash back.
Overall, Silent Sea has some good ideas. It speaks of the current themes that affect our planet and what could happen in the future. But the rest (survival horror) is just things that are revisited again and again which makes the series too predictable.
Bulgasal (2021)
Too slow.
I bet the people who gave this a 10 or 9 just gave it because of the casting. Now if you replace the cast with random people?
2 episodes in and I must say, this drama is just full of nonsenses. The story isn't bad. But the execution, the little details, the way the story is told is just too bad.
For these first episodes, the pacing is just too slow. This is just bland. Something that could be told in 5-10 minutes is being told in 2hours.
I like Kwon Nara (Itaewon Class) and Lee Ji-Wook (Sweet Home). But this won't save it for me. There's nothing exciting about. If the main plot takes 2 hours to be defined then it is a skip and fail for me. Netflix has other shows for this winter.
Injil (2021)
Entertaining
Korean thriller movies are giving me what Hollywood is missing these past few years. Hollywood turned to superhero movies while Korea comes out with original movies that are rare nowadays. And you won't be disappointed if you like Korean thriller. It's not perfect. Some situations are super dumb. But all that matter is that you'll spend a good time watching this.
Eternals (2021)
Different style
This movie is so different from all the previous Marvel movies. If they didn't made reference about the Avengers, anyone watching Eternals would have thought it's a complete different universe. It does not feel like a super hero movie for sure. More like a movie where people with superpowers fight each other. I don't think any kids going to watch Eternals will ask their parents to buy any of the Eternals costumes for the next Halloween. None of these Heroes stand out. They don't inspire people and they're not relatable in a way to feel like a role model for people. It's just a good watch for the continuation of the MCU movies and main story.
Balsinjehan (2021)
Intense thriller
Definitely has some flaws. Everything is not perfect like the police's actions. However, the film is intense. From the first minute to the end, the movie is really fast pace. The 90 so minutes will pass super fast. There are a couple slow moments in the middle of the movie but this is to introduce the villain. Overall, great to watch.
Deep (2021)
Entertaining enough
This is a good movie. The pace at some moments of the film is quite slow. The story has good ideas. But there are decisions in the film that will make you scratch your head. The characters are smart students but logic is to be put aside. Just think of it as part of a greater picture. That's for the negative.
Anyhow, the positive points are:
- the characters are rich. I mean they're all different in the way they live their lives. There is a partygoer, a student A, an influencer and a gamer which represent most of the youngsters we have today.
- the plot is quite different from the thriller or any other movie that scare people. When going into the movie, we might think they'll just all die one by one. However, this doesn't happen. They, at least, help each other to overcome death and stay alive. That's a big plus for me.
- the characters mature in the film. The gamer gets friends, the party boy restores his relationship with his dad. The sisters trust in one another, etc.
Overall a good watch.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Good movie for a weekend's night
The beginning is good. The killing and pace of the movie is constant. Then arrives 2/3 of the movie and it starts to go slow. Then back to normal towards the ending. That's annoying. Just forwarded the film.
The kids are kinda smart in the beginning and they unveil the truth to the viewer as well as keep their heads cool. But the ending is just, well, dumb. The kids left their brains somewhere they don't remember.
Regarding the environment, not all part feel like the 90s. Which is another let down.
Overall it's a good Friday and Saturday night movie to watch.
Dambo (2020)
A very warm movie but not perfect
Nice movie to enjoy if you're into loving family and all that goes with it. Another movie that shows love transcends blood. The 1st and 2nd act are very touching. The child actress is just amazing. Super talented. Had some tears for her at the end of the second act.
However, the 3rd act is just rushed to finish with a predictable ending. The writer needed not to twist the movie around to show a daughter's love. Could have kept the same directive line centered around the girl and it would have been a perfect movie.
Bae-sim-won (2019)
Inspirational
Great movie. The plot is predictable but it is always fun to watch when people do the right thing.
A juror can't decide. Therefore, he starts investigating the case. As more and more questions arise, other jurors start following him to reveal the truth.
It has funny moments as well as sad and happy moments. Watch it with your loved ones and hope you'll feel inspired to find and seed fairness in this world.
Saekomdalkom (2021)
Looks like an unfinished movie
The themes presented in the movie are the reality that face most of Asian country workplaces, especially Japan and South Korea. Endless working hours, being bossed around without guaranteed of being a perm, and work affecting relationships, etc. Certain companies are moving forward on focusing on the well being of their employees. But this movie still show what is currently still the society. The note for me is reflecting what this movie is showing. It does it's job if you just want to see the truth.
In the third act, the viewer will just feel like the movie is weird or unfinished. We can think there are still questions left. But deep down, they all have been answered.
Just feeling disappointed because i'm not watching a movie to see it telling me what people are facing in the real world. I don't care about that. There are documentaries for that. Ain't people watching movies because they want to evade the real world? Would have liked a better ending.
Eksiteu (2019)
Fast paced with comedy
Excellent movie. Don't take away your eyes from it. Turn off your phone. If you've liked "Speed" with Keanu and Sandra Bullock, then you will love this Korean movie spiced with comedy. The 2 mains are great and you'll feel very supportive of them as the movie advance.
