Inside Man (II) (2022)
9/10
Complicated and infuriating!
5 November 2022
Wow. What to say about Inside Man. Of course the plot is completely implausible but that's kind of the point - that ordinary people can be driven to do extra ordinary things by circumstances and sometimes life just isn't plausible! There are echoes of The League Of Gentlemen in the humour and surrealism which is no bad thing. Of course a lot of people are going to absolutely hate it - this is a real marmite tv show.

Needless to say the acting is stellar - you can't really go wrong with David Tennant and Stanley Tucci in the lead roles. The supporting cast are also excellent - how you make a 15x serial killer almost lovable is an achievement!

Really hope there is a second series to tie up the loose ends of season one. I suspect the vehicle can only really stand two or three seasons maximum - I doubt there are ever going to be industrial quantities of this show like they seem to always do in the US.

In conclusion - this is well worth a watch but just be aware, you'll either love it or you won't!

Enjoyed the book, loved the series

Having read the books and greatly enjoyed them I was looking forward to the tv adaptation. It didn't disappoint. Gary Oldman in particular was exceptional and captured exactly what I had imagined Jackson Lamb to be. Can't wait for season two!

Utter drivel

How on earth were serious actors like Michael Caine & Kenneth Branagh persuaded to appear in this bilge. The story is beyond confusing - it just makes no sense. If I hadn't been watching it on a plane I'd have walked out.

Superb!

Rewatching Breaking Bad during lockdown. Quite possibly the best tv show ever made. The writing, the acting, the cinematography- everything about this show is exceptional.

If you haven't seen it already then where have you been for the last 10 years?

Very enjoyable

I actually really enjoyed this show. Ok it's basically the same formula as The Inbetweeners but transposed to the context of a football club. You have the same basic characters - the fish out of water geek, mr thinks he's more attractive than he is, mr nice but dim. Had it's share of cringeworthy moments but a high number of laugh out loud moments too. It's the kind of show that could improve further as it finds its feet in future seasons or could just fizzle and run out of ideas. Let's hope season 2 comes along and delivers

Awful
17 April 2020
Made to the end of episode 1 with difficulty. This has so much potential to be funny but simply wasn't. Making cold blooded murderers likeable and humorous clearly takes a good deal more skill than seems to be possessed by anyone involved in this train wreck. Avoid!

Utter garbage

Utter garbage, but visually stunning garbage. The effects and stunts are all spectacular (as long as you like it gorey) but in pretty much every other respect this an awful film.

Enjoyable watch

A work of high art it ain't. Rarely scary but often very funny. Recommended light movie entertainment.

Dreadful

No matter how worthy the subject matter, it can't make up for the over acting, unsympathetic characters, poor script and subtle as a brick storyline. Painfully bad movie.

Awful

Might be me, maybe I just don't get it but I found this neither clever, inciteful nor funny.

Area 51 (2015)

Well that's 91 minutes of my life wasted....
4 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
To describe this film as awful would be unkind to awful films. The entire thing is supposedly constructed from "found footage" meaning there isn't a steady shot in the entire thing and those inclined to motion sickness may feel the need to vomit. To make matters worse, much of it is seen through a "night vision" meaning it's green and viewed through a telescope.

Then there's the story - or should I say the lack of it. This isn't a movie that reaches a conclusion - there isn't even a hint at a story arc. Instead there's a basic premise (that the main character was abducted by aliens and now feels compelled to break into Area 51) and a complete lack of any sort of resolution - why does he feel that way? what was his mission? Did he succeed?

This film feels like a student art project with a special effects budget. Do yourself a favor and avoid!

Hugely enjoyable, uniquely Glasgow
2 August 2015
Greatly enjoyed this film. The weakest element is probably the story which is on the improbable end of the spectrum but, as long as you forgive the absurdity of the plot and just go with the flow, it's a thoroughly enjoyable 90 minutes. They could also possibly have done with a little more explanation of the back-story rather than jumping straight in - some might find it all a little complicated especially in the first half hour. The comedy is uniquely Glasgow and the language typically (and authentically!) blue. Visually it's all nicely shot with some of the more off-beat Glasgow landmarks featuring prominently. The acting is great with, as others have noted, standout performances by both Emma Thomson & Ray Winstone. I can't help thinking that Robert Carlyle as Director got better performances out of his other leads than he did out of Robert Carlyle (Actor) - perhaps the double responsibility of first time director and lead actor was a little too much to pull off. Not that his performance was bad, just a little lacking in finesse in places.

Minor criticisms apart, this is a very enjoyable movie and well worth watching.
