Tales from the Loop: Stasis (2020)
Suspension of disbelief violated
Kind of a shame that they tried to establish mythology tightly in the first and second act, just to spoil it all in the third act for cheap emotions.
For instance:
* The second act has a ton of looting and irresponsibility, which one may or may not like, but establishes that both characters are ready to do anything with each other, consequences be damned, which serves to bring them closer to each other. Then in the third act, time starts again and... no consequences whatsoever because the writers wanted to focus on other emotions now. So then, what was all the fuss before?
* In the second act, the characters realize the machine is broken, and freak out with fear of being stuck like this. That freak out makes them do extreme thing to solve it, which brutally bring the characters apart. Then 5 minutes later, you learn that they can get out of the time pause by just removing their bracelet, because the writers wanted to use it as a plot device for betrayal. So then, what was all the fuss before?
The idea was good, and it started really well, it's a shame they made the second half so cheap and thoughtless, completely breaking suspension of disbelief. :(
Zumbo's Just Desserts (2016)
I score you a 2
Third Netflix contest show I watch (after the glass-blowing one and the interior design one), and all 3 are painfully obviously rigged to make a controversial candidate win, also opposed in the finale by the actually most deserving candidate, always creating the same anti-climactic infuriating moment I guess they hope people will talk about. Why do they keep doing this? This is so intellectually insulting to viewers...
This one has the undeserving winning candidate actually ruin a half of her not-very-good-looking-in-the-first-place piece during the finale because of a beginner's mistake, to the point of not being able to serve that part; but to make her win, they still gave her the 10/10 to make her win (that no other candidate got in the history of the show). Couldn't be more obvious and more intentionally infuriating.
As redeeming traits, the winning undeserving candidates in this show are actually nice people (wasn't the case for the 2 other shows, making it even more infuriating), and this show has a really good production quality, particularly production design. Therefore, 2/10 and not 1.
Still, what's the point of watching a show with no genuine stake?
Interior Design Masters (2019)
Made to outrage you
Most episodes aren't too bad. And then you watch the last one, and you realize it's all been rigged, and it all comes together.
I had watched the glass-blowing show a few weeks before, also a reality TV contest show by Netflix, and it was the exact same recipe.
Basically: take the most unlikeable candidate of all, one that clearly is not as good as some others. Build up some kind of rivalry with another, better candidate. Make sure the final is between those two, kill other contestants away regardless of how good or bad they're doing.
Then during the final, provide ample evidence that the unlikeable candidate is not as good as the other one. Let the judges slip out hints of how the other one is really exactly what they're looking for, that their flaws are minor and they're learning a lot, and that the terrible person's flaws are beginner's flaws.
Then, at the last second, name the terrible candidate as the winner, and enjoy the outrage.
On this show, it was even sneakier because the better candidate was also not the most likable, but had been making visible efforts (the judges repeated it over and over), so there was a redemption arc to his story that made it even more sour.
Not gonna lie, on the glass-blowing show, I was outraged and I thought about it for days. Then I saw this one, and I went "ooooooh" when the exact same thing happened. It all clicked. So, I wasn't even mad this time, but I do feel a bit insulted and disrespected, now that I know the show tried to sell things as genuine, but really had been so manipulative.
Den utrolige historie om den kæmpestore pære (2017)
Dumb but cute
Just because it's for kids doesn't mean it needs to be stupid...
For instance: "oh no, we're stuck on that ship and there's nothing we can do, we need to deliver a message, let's eject a bottle with the message in it and it will land where we need!"
2 minutes later: "oh no, the ship is sinking now!" "well, don't worry, I have a dragon who will help us out of it"
Wait, where was your dragon like 2 minutes ago instead of that message in a bottle silly thing?
My 5-yo liked it, and it's cute (despite pretty poor graphics), so I guess it's good for the target audience; but damn!
