Popcorn (1991)
The original SCREAM...called Popcorn: To Scream or Not to Scream? That's the horror.
1991: The slasher boom of the early eighties has already dried out and the only things that were left from that era are tired unoriginal sequels of franchises and low-budget horror b-movies that have rip-off the formula of famous slasher franchises... Popcorn popped out during 1991 and was yet another slasher b-movie...NO!!!Popcorn may be a cheesy slasher film without budget but is very original and is the movie that ends the era of slasher films.A comedy/parody/horror slasher hybrid, unique in its own way,Popcorn satirizes the horror industry itself and the horror audience of the time that want more senseless blood and gore.
The plot centers upon Maggie who is being stalked in her dreams. She's part of a film school crew that stage a horror movie festival. The killer stalks her in the movies(Not very original).Instead of the gore or the antagonist,Popcorn's selling point was its satire, pop culture references and genre deconstruction and the makers of Scream were all aware of that, using these elements as the principal idea of their big budget film. Also if you remember Ghostface has an electronically altered voice used for the signature prank calls of Scream. The same method that was FIRST used by Popcorn killer doesn't feature as heavily as it does in Scream but it is significant.May Scream be a rip-off of Popcorn?
The bad thing of this movie is the plot. When it starts as something unoriginal and predictable,in the middle it changes to a brilliant suspenseful film and at some point towards the end it is suddenly fallen apart. What a waste...Yeah it is a forgotten movie and it will continue to be but it may deserve better luck.May the false advertising as a standard slasher film or the changes and the replacement of director and female lead be the cause of the failure of this good movie???I don t know and no one does but it sure deserves credits for the creation of a franchise that would change the luck of the slasher films in the following years called Scream...
Attack the Block (2011)
Critters at District 9 gang streets
A very entertaining action-packed sci-fi flick with young street gang with Goonies-like kid mobsters fighting Critters-like monsters from the space is the right movie to watch with your friends smoking some joint! The characters are good, the dialogue is bad and marijuana is plenty!!The effects are good except the neon teeth of the monsters and there is some gore too.The movie does not take it self serious and if u expect a horror movie u are wrong.just a comedy/action thing with sci-fi elements but not disappointing for me that i was not expecting too much from this movie and want something entertaining for killing my time.
Oblivion 2: Backlash (1996)
Cowboys and Aliens ...1996!
Here we have the sequel of sci-fi western movie Oblivion. The first movie was a very great trashy sci-fi western comedy that does not take itself too serious, but was too damn slow paced and boring at some points.Yeah the first movie has weird - cartoon like- characters and cheesy dialogues, lots of humorous one-liners and also bizarre special- effects and costumes. But nο actual plot and incoherent situations. It was fun too watch but the second movie is a bit better (not a lot though ,just a bit -we re talking about bad movies, dudes!).
Actually the Oblivion was shot back to back with Backlash and so we are not talking about an actual sequel, just "the second part of a some kind of TV mini-series".I said that because the first 10 minutes are actually footage from the first movie , a summary for those who didn't watch the first one(Just skip this part). And the whole duration of the film is only 83 counting the 10 minutes of footage so i don t recommend this movie for those who didn't see the first part.
Backlash is an incoherent and no actual plot movie like its predecessor. It begins from where the first movie left off.All the cast of the first movie re-appears in this one except from those who die at the first part. But it focus more on Lash(Musetta Vander),the female villain in the first movie.Vander is hilarious and too damn sexy in her role. Also we have new characters appeared: the lethal bounty hunter and gentleman named Sweeney and the some sort identical brother of the main villain of the first movie Redeye ,called Jaggar.
May Backlash be a little funnier than its predecessor with the same kind jokes but it is more fast-paced(because of its duration), not such a mesh and not so tiring. The acting is not good neither bad and the plot is not so cheesy like the first one but cheesy enough for a b movie fan and it also lacks of the action of the first because it centers on comedy and the clichés of the spaghetti westerns. The campiness of Backlash ensures that you and your friends may have a good fun drinking night on your couch if u have seen and liked the first.they just don't make low budget movies like Oblivion I & II anymore. The uniqueness of these two films, a hybrid of sci-fi spaghetti westerns with elements of comedy, horror, romance(and drama particular in the first Oblivion) are the weird recipe for cult not classic movies that spoiled somewhere but who cares... i consider these films two of best from Full Moon. Yee-ha!!!!!!!!!!!
Also i forget to mention that the hilarious performance of George Takei as the alcoholic town doc is one of a kind and reprises his role in Backlash:"Jim, beam me up!")
Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005)
Good but not Jumanji
I have personally fun with this sci-fi version of Jumanji without Robin Williams, but the lack of many adult characters and the character of Jonah Bobo who is an annoying little brat that brings the catastrophe everywhere, make this movie like a sci-fi version Of Goonies of some sort that is more appropriate for children than an average sci-fi enthusiast. The special effects are great and thankfully are not cheap computer graphics and create this stylized "retro-1950s sci-fi look" of the film.Zathura is more like a spiritual sequel of Jumanji and is loosely based on the illustrated book Zathura by Chris Van Allsburg, author of Jumanji and i was hoping that it will be more action-packed than Jumanji but all the action happens only in the house and that means that lacks of the brilliant outside action scenes of Jumanji.
So, the little brats are playing a game that found in the house basement(so predictable!!-if i go to my basement i wonder what the hell i will find there)and they begin play it and they start without knowing blasting the house into pieces and they send it into outer space, meet aliens,robots,etc...And they must finish it if they want to stop the chaos.
