Testees (2008)
The FUNNIEST thing I've seen on TV in a long, long time!
I was almost completely asleep when I started hearing the dialog from this show on TV last night. Even before my eyes opened, I was chuckling. Finally awaking, I was like WTF am I watching?! By the commercial break . . .
Testees! Brace yourself. It's weird, awkward and GROSS! You'll almost be ashamed of yourself during and after watching. But just go with it! Because it has some of the most improbable yet funniest scenes of all-time. Lots of sophomoric humor with dry, comedic dialog. For ADULTS only though. Somehow it just works!
OMG, I must see every single episode now! I just hope they can keep it up . . .
The Mist (2007)
"The Mist" - One of the most compelling horror films of late
The GOOD: Incredibly well-acted and directed. Mesmerizing and suspenseful throughout. Horrifying and tragic.
The BAD: Some of the special f/x shots didn't look realistic enough (think "tentacles"). I think if the budget was a little higher, they could've made it look better. Seeing as the film seems to be doing well, I think they should go back and re-do some of the f/x for the DVD release. Also, some of the dialog seemed a bit awkward, strained.
Firstly, I've never read the story, but I very much enjoyed this film. It truly is a fascinating exploration into human nature during inconceivably and inexplicably horrifying circumstances. I also enjoyed the inter-dimensional sci-fi aspect; that entire concept was on my mind long after the film was over. There is much talk about the ending; I feel that, as tragic as it was, it was certainly bold and entirely appropriate.
Any minor criticisms I have of this film are far outweighed by how compelling it is as a whole. Kudos to the cast and crew!
Steal This Movie (2000)
Like a turd floating in a bowl . . .
Want a great recipe for failure? Take a crappy, leftist political plot, add in some weak & completely undeveloped characters and then throw in the worst sequences a movie has ever known. Let stew for a week (the amount of time probably spent making this trash).
The result is 'Steal This Movie,' a cinematic experience that takes bad movies to dangerous and exotically low places never before conceived.
This movie utterly blew chunks at my face for its entire run time. Words cannot convey how painful it was to watch. This is not one of those bad movies that you and your friends can sit around and make fun of. This is not 'Plan 9 From Outer Space.' This is a long, boring and sad waste of time. 'Steal This Movie' is the biggest waste of energy and talent I have ever seen. It depresses me when I realize that people *actually* took time out of their lives to act in this tripe, if you can call it "acting." But then again, when you have poor direction, poor writing, poor EVERYTHING - "acting" is the last thing to criticize.
This movie is like a huge, disgusting turd that you yearn to quickly flush out of existence, fearful that a friend or loved one might somehow see it. I really wish I could somehow destroy every copy of this film so it will not pollute the minds of aspiring filmmakers. Thank you, Robert Greenwald, for giving me newfound respect for every other movie I have ever seen. You have shown me what is truly awful and why I should appreciate all those movies that are merely crappy and/or boring.
Wolf Creek (2005)
Solid horror film that actually tells a good story.
First of all, I'm amazed that so many people hated this movie. I saw it last week not expecting much. I was pretty blown away! The 1st half of the movie took its time as you got to know the characters and feel like you're actually on a road trip with them.
I had no problem with the seemingly "absent" plot that was a bit of improv. That's how real life usually is. It made me feel comfortable with just a few minor creepy "bumps." By the time the violence kicked in, it was perfect. Great acting, especially by John Jarratt.
Granted, no one really knows for sure about what happened during the course of these "true events." Or maybe someone does but WE'LL never know . . .
Great directing from Greg McLean and hats off to the cast/crew.
Bottom line, it was a great film that was not quite your typical horror film. It had the spirit of the original Texas Chainsaw but not the same storyline. See it for yourself and decide.
