Classic Rituporno, language no barrier

Okay, this is not the best film which ever happened to Hindi cinema or even Rituporno Ghosh. But, this is perhaps the best Hindi movie of 2004 which was littered with rubbish like Main Hoon Na, Veer Zaara to some extent and others like Vaastu Shastra,etc.

The setting is perfect, the acting is powerful and -trademark Rituporno- dialogue based. Ajay Devgan speaks volumes through his eyes, Aishwarya is again at her best after Chokher Bali and the Sanjay Leela Bhansali films. The cinematography- a greenish hue- was interesting. The title was apt- it all comes down to a raincoat actually. All I can say that only the tiniest inspiration had beckoned Ghosh. The tiniest inspiration being the best short story by the best short story writer ever- no prizes for guessing right......!

Mother-daughter relationship dexterously explored by the maverick director

Sarojini(Aparna Sen) is a famous dancer whose profound dedication to the dance-floor causes the widening of a cleavage between her daughter and herself following death of her husband. Is she happy with her career and success? Has she found a substitute in the character of Dipankar De?

Aditi(Deboshree Roy) is a young doctor making all possible preparations to build a home away from her celebrity dancer-mother. She is convinced that Sarojini has forgotten all about her father since he died about 20 years ago. Correct isn't she? In this world her mother is wrong and her father was wronged. Will this ICE ever break? The film starts in the morning and ends the following morning.The film starts on 19th April. 19th April- the day when Aditi's father and Sarojini's husband died.

The Coward (1965)
Revival of burnt out passions or de-ja vu?

This can be categorized as another Ray short-of-a-full-length venture! The title could not be more apt, as COWARD is written all over the young writer(Soumitra Chatterjee)- especially after we are told of the past sequence. Some years ago, Amitabh had refused to marry lover Karuna in haste. He needed 'time' to think it over, the city was big, he was starting to work, he wasn't even established properly- how could he marry Karuna suddenly?

Many years later, his car breaks down and he is given shelter for the evening in Bimal Gupta's house- a successful tea planter somewhere in Darjeeling. The tea-planter is lonely in that part of the world with no neighbors nearby, hence he talks garrulously about his takes on life. Amitabha is now an established screen-writer who talks less but is astounded to meet Bimal's wife- Karuna.

A breakthrough performance by Madhabi Mukherjee, this is a wonderful movie which will not fail to appeal anyone.
