American Reunion (2012)
True to the original, wet your pants laughing tackle!
I was so excited when I discovered they were making another American Pie. After American Pie;The Wedding, the following films were disappointing, so was glad to see the original cast was returning. I was a little worried they would not be able to match the first three films, but I couldn't have been more wrong. From the very beginning, the scene is set, ensuring hilarity and "dirty" jokes galore. The characters, even Stifmeister, are very likable and endearing. (With the exception of a smug boss and Heather's boyfriend). We learn that Jim's mother passed away and there is a fab subplot where Jim and Michelle are trying to cheer up Jim's dad, ending in a meeting with the infamous "Stifler's Mon"! We also learn that Jim and Michelle are having marital difficulties and trying to rekindle their non existent sex life. Stifler has still not grown up, though the ending of the film for him was a stroke of genius in my eyes, and I did not see the resulting union coming at all. All the characters bar Jim's mother have a part, some larger than others, and all of them look fantastic, especially Chris Ostreicher! I only watched this movie yesterday and I already want to watch it again. There were many genuine laugh out loud moments, including a funny scene involving a see through pan lid.......... Give it a go, if you are a fan of the first installments, I am sure you will love this. If you didn't like the original movies, you will probably not like this movie as it is much of the same caliber of joke. Special mention goes to Eugene Levy as Jim's dad. The best comedy character created in years!
Emergo (2011)
Actually a really good movie!
I watched this movie with my hubby while nursing a hangover. I had never heard of it so was watching with a little skepticism. I'm really glad I gave it a go. The movie starts with a widower and his two kids calling in paranormal researchers to investigate some creepy goings on at their apartment. The young boy states it is his Mum who is "neither alive nor dead". The teenage daughter has serious issues with her father and abuse is hinted at several times in the movie, thought in all honesty I think it is more of a "did he/didn't he" subplot and not a major twist. The scares kick in almost instantly and they come thick and fast. I recognized two cast members but really liked all of them, good actors with a likability factor. The lead investigator has it pinned down as poltergeist activity spawning from the daughter who blames her father for her mothers death. We later learn the mother was not a nice person and her husband was badly treated by her. The events get more threatening and the daughter is inferred to have schizophrenia (as did her mother before she died) and the lead investigator concludes the case is closed. The end has the only "cheesy" scene which in my opinion could have been done in a better way that lets us know if the investigator was right. That is my only real criticism. Actually, one more little criticism, there is a machine used by the investigators that is pixilated and it is never explained why, but all in all a good film that will make you jump. Good effort!
American Horror Story (2011)
Erotic, freaky hell house.....I love it!!
Well, where to begin? The Harmons move to a new home (at a bargain price) following traumatic events over the prior six months. Quickly we are introduced to a plethora of creepy and weird individuals, of varying life status, who have different intentions towards this family. There are gay men, kleptomaniacs and downs syndrome kids. And an abundance of naughtiness. THIS IS NOT FOR MINORS. It features masturbation twice in the pilot and lots of sexual references throughout. Also a bondage style sex scene is pivotal to the plot. This series has it all, murder, infidelity, insanity, abortion, blackmail.........need I go on...... It is very cleverly written and very in your face. If you appreciate a good homage to other horror flicks, keep your eyes open for subtle references. Currently we have a little more idea who is living and who is not, but there is still lots of stuff to learn and I am always left wishing it was next week for the next episode. Give it a whirl. It's like Marmite, you will either love it or hate it. I LOVE IT!!!
