Love (2016)
New, exciting and different love story
At first glance this series looks like it will cover the same topic as hundreds of series have covered before but from the offset is very different.
The characters are actually very interesting and 3 dimensional with multiple layered personalities. While Gus is shown to be the stereotypical "nerd" and Mickey is the "adventurous, crazy, outgoing" girl but the characters have enough depth to still be interesting even in mundane situations. Gus and Mickey are the couple and the formula is a classic romantic comedy formula. However the episodes still managed to be unexpected and went in directions I didn't suspect. The series is also very humorous, mostly subtly but these intermittent chuckles further increased the impact of watching it.
This series is a refreshing, interesting new series and should defiantly be on your Netflix watchlist.
Suits: No Refills (2015)
Good but could be much better
Overall I mainly enjoyed this episode but there were sections that I felt weren't as good.
The Donna leaving plot is starting to tire for me. At first it provided a twist but now it seems people are just arguing over her and she is left complaining and angry - given less time to show off the Donna 'charm' that makes her such a likable character. I also don't like the panic attacks and the fact Harvey is seeing a therapist, I feel this adds nothing to the show and seems out of character for me. This along with the fact that Harvey was on the receiving end of others plots' made his character less interesting than before - he also seems to have more angry moments towards people, which is fine and part of his personality but feels overused recently. The new character Jack is forgettable and doesn't seem to have a big enough reason to chase after Harvey.
The parts I did like was the 'power struggle' (for lack of a better term) between Robert and Mike, this was enjoyable to watch and showed how much Mike had progressed as a lawyer. The growing relationship between Rachael and Jessica also made sense and showed potential. Also, I thought the penultimate scene in the courtroom was fantastic and great watching.
The Imitation Game (2014)
Predictable and dull
Cumberbatch played Alan Turing well, but I felt he was given almost same persona as he plays in Sherlock. His mannerisms were almost identical. This is where most of the 'laughs' in the film come from and as I had seen Sherlock before hand 70% felt like dull repeats. The fact that nobody was friends with him just reminded me of Sherlock - this was not true in real life. Secondary, the plot was almost identical to every other movie about a genius - Turring was played as unrecognized and an oddball. The plot also felt too smooth edged, all the twists were predictable and the events were too coincidental to be believable. The spy subplot was unnecessary and added nothing to the story. This may sound pedantic, but some parts seemed out of place for the historical setting: the detective's too modern haircut and lines such as "ohh my gosh" which really brought me out of the story. Finally, the ending scene was unnecessary and should have cut straight to the ending lines. Speaking of which, the last line inferred that the two things mentioned were linked, but they were in fact months apart. This is an example of the film's unreasonable twisting of facts in order to give the plot and conclusion this type of film needed. Should you wish to find out the real story of Alan Turing I suggest you google it as this film is not very accurate and unfairly stereotypes Turring.
Modern Family: The Wedding, Part 2 (2014)
OK..But not the best
The start of the 5th season was very promising but modern family has really gone down since then, this episode contained one minor joke that wasn't that funny. The hundreds of story lines introduced were abandoned. The Haley-Andy storyline was a welcome change and the part I most enjoyed. It was a welcome change from the old Haley, I enjoyed seeing her change and mature into appreciating kindness and putting other's feelings first.. But even this, the writers left at an unsatisfying ending. I forgot the argument between cam's parents and found I couldn't care less whether they got back together. The writers are also milking the gay theme making Cam and Mitchell act in silly manners at any opportunities. In this episode Luke and Manny were not given much screen time, making the episode seem a little more mature. After the much better start to the season, I was left a little disappointed by this episode and was left wondering where the family can go from here.
