Joyû-rei (1996)
what a ride
this movie is practically impossible to describe. the alternate title "Don't Look Up" is a lot more descriptive. Like most Japanese cinema, the story is not as linear as American. The story revolves around a director who is filming a story about a ww2 deserter. The set is haunted(?) by an actress who died(?) during the filming of a tv show back in the 60s. the director is the ONLY one who saw this show. if you have seen Ringu (the director Hideo Nakata is the same) and liked it, you'll like ghost actress. i loved ghost actress a lot more than ringu. a truly scary and disturbing movie. a 10!
The Big Red One (1980)
dang good war movie
ok, up front, i'll admit i'm a mark hamill fan... but, i read the book b4 i saw the movie. it is a relative true adaptation (of course sam fuller wrote the book i think) this was a story that made me want to find out more about the actual battles. yes, it sent me to the history books! now THAT is a recommendation! something that makes you want to know more! so many war movies are all heroics, this one is people, and the horror that war inflicts upon people. it's sad, gruesome, scary, and funny in turns, just like real life! if you are a ww2 buff, sam fuller fan, or lee marvin fan, go for it. if you're a mark hamill (sw heroic type) fan, this one might be disappointing. but he is very good in it. shoot, there isn't a bad performance to be found!

Dawn of the Dead (1978)
9 out of 10
not as scary as night of the living dead, not as gory as day of the dead, but hands down the funniest of the trilogy. i was lucky enough to see this (and night) in the theater @ a midnight show, the way one should start their zombie fandom. tv viewing hurts dawn the most of the three. the vivid colors and over the top plot don't work as well on the small screen. any plot description i add would be redundant, so i'll write my feelings on this movie. what i saw was a rollercoaster ride of excitement, horror, humor (and pathos in the middle). dawn is a prophetic movie in some ways. the scenes in the tv studio makes one think of corporate greed when the rescue stations were outdated ("don't take the crawl off the screen, we'll lose viewers!")...the jerry springer show (when the "audience" attacks the scientist during the interview) if you hate gore, you'll hate this movie. if you like black comedy i recommend it.
