Fat Fiction (2020)

Nothing new here
4 September 2020
So many different documentaries about the same subject have been coming out since 2009 or so. Same cast of characters telling us the same thing. While I highly respect these people and hold them in high regard, there isn't anything here that I didn't learn in the 5-6 previous docs on Low-Carb/high fat or keto.

And for the record, I followed the same principles in this documentary starting in 2008. I was 178 lbs at the time. I got to as low as 171. Since then, my weight has shot up to as high as 205 with a high percentage of bodyfat and has settled to a BW in the low-mid 190s.

It doesn't work for everyone.

It would have been better if...

This show would have been better if everyone didn't talk the same. Do people really talk like this? Every single character has that snarky, sarcastic comeback that is prevalent in TV nowadays. I'd blame some of this on the acting but I cannot fault the actors for delivering such cack dialogue.

Having been someone who has moved on several occasions, I just don't see a 16 year old boy, a year removed from seeing his father commit suicide, spend time in rehab for alcoholism (a plot point that disappeared by season's end), walking outside his house and freely introducing himself to the neighborhood.

They spend so much time complaining about the heat but they wear dark colors, long sleeved shirts, double layered clothing, hoodies, etc. in the middle of summer in the California desert.

A great concept that has been poorly executed.

Sometime I wonder how films like this get made
13 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is a nice film if you like staring at a naked Brad Renfro lookalike for 98 minutes, but this LGBT film had nothing more. As a writer (with an award winning LGBT screenplay to my credit) it frustrates me when I see characters that are just there with no purpose, or plot twists that go nowhere.

We see one of Frankie's friends, as an example, not take part in the swimming at the beach. He sits and watches. When they mug the gay man for his weed, he walks away and doesn't participate. Why? Is he gay and has feelings for Frankie? The gay man they're mugging?

What happens to the gay man they mugged? Anyone get arrested? Frankie's mom sits at his computer. She asks later if he wants to discuss anything. Does she know and is coaxing him into coming out? Too many questions unanswered. It's as if they ran out of money and had to stop production at this point.

So much confusion. I'm even more confused how this film won at Sundance and the producers who optioned my script, about a gay professional baseball player, couldn't even get funding.

Freakish (2016–2018)

It's like watching a car wreck...it's awful, but you look anyway to see the blankets covering the bodies
22 October 2017
The premise was decent enough to get me to watch, but for crying out loud, who at Hulu green lighted this mess? So many continuity problems. The writing is awful. It's bad enough that it is stiff and unrealistic but they actually insult the intelligence of the audience by reminding us through dialogue of the subplots, IE. "I hate you!" "Oh, because I like your girlfriend, right?" Please!

The story is only suppose to be over the course of 2-3 days but in some instances, the characters mention they've been locked up for 11. This brings me to the next point...continuity. Girls with hair that looks perfect, made up, looking like they got a good night's sleep. Boys, teens though they may be, clean shaven, not a speck of beard growth. No showers. Nothing to brush their teeth, and the lovers make out with each other. Even after 2 days -- nobody appears gamey?

This is a dangerous chemical event yet we're expected to believe that none of the chemicals get into the school through cracks in the doors, windows, ventilation system? Even when kids make it to cars, they take their masks off in the cars as if they'd be perfectly sealed? There is nothing realistic about this!

It's a shame because you have good actors with nice resumes who were given poor dialogue and were poorly directed. It reminds me of "Dragnet" where accomplished actors were just wooden and awful on that show but you'd see them elsewhere and they'd be brilliant.

It's a sad commentary that so many writers and producers with strong, original ideas cannot get so much as a pitch meeting while crap like this turns up.

If you can -- miss it.

The Lodge (2008)

One of those low budget, single location, get them in one room and try to kill them, "In the vein of" films
21 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
All I kept thinking of as I watched this movie was the line in the commercial that spoofs horror/triller movies, "Why can't we just get in the running car?!"

I will give them credit, they got people to put up money to get their movie made, which isn't easy to do. They followed the standard formula...keep your locations to a minimum. Keep your characters to a minimum. Some times it works. Some times it doesn't. In this case it doesn't and the reason for me is the script.

We know why Michael is bringing Julia to the lodge and it is done nicely and subtly in one quick shot. But, there is no rhyme or reason as to why the killer is a killer or why his child is as well. No background at all.

What burned me is the dialog. I don't know why Michael would brag to a perfect stranger about his girlfriend's sexual prowess, as an example. Too much talking during the stalking process. The less said, the better, especially with all the "Why are your trying to kill us" clichés.

Still, it gives hope to aspiring film makers that they, too, can get their film made. Stick to the formula, but come up with a better script.
