Mysterious Skin (2004)
A bit disturbing
Even if the story is difficult, it manages to not be grotesque. The acting is truly good, a young Joseph Gordon-Levvit stands out. The parallelism between the main characters' coping mechanisms says a lot in a tender/honest way. I give it a 7 bcs I think music could have been something here, and I definitely felt it was missing. It caught me.
La mala noche (2019)
It is not a thriller
First, you need to know: this is not a thriller. The film tells the story of Pilar Castaño, a prostitute who owes a debt to some pimp. This man has a big bussiness and has caught a little girl to traffic. After Pilar's daughter dies she wants to help the girl escape the pimp's house. There is a man who seems to be in love with Pilar and who is in the background for most of the movie.
To be honest, it's a bad movie. It develops a story but the characters are weak, and there is not enough tension around the debt and the kidnapped girl, so it doesn't really involve you as a spectator. Didn't like it.
Eraserhead (1977)
It doesn't tell a story
Well, I didn't like it. It might be because of my uneducated eye. In a nutshell, it doesn't tell a story.
I know that judging cinema by its ability to narrate is, if not wrong, at least very simplistic. However, some cohesion throughout a film, even if not in the form of strict cause-effect narration, is necessary to catch a viewer's eye. This movie doesn't successfully tie together the monsters and Harry's "story". Their relation could be interpreted in an oniric sense but... Meh.
On the other hand, it has some great use of light, and that I admire. Papp
Señorita extraviada (2001)
The power of testimony
Challenging silence is brave. This documentary acknowledges the voices of the relatives of women who were murdered during the late nineties in Ciudad Juárez. It draws attention to the the multiple forces that have been involved one way or another in the impunity that this wave of feminicides has left. It's sad that this situation is ongoing. Papp.
Blade Runner (1982)
A sci-fi landmark with a weak plot
It is captivating to see how things today were imagined in the 1980s, mostly in visual terms. Depictions of the future, technological progress, science and corporations are also interesting. Looking back, this film is clearly seminal for the sci-fi tradition that came afterwards. However, the plot is poor and I do not understand why many people have said it is "philosophical". From my point of view, the movie reflects a huge concern/fear about the ultra development of technology and the threat it could represent for humanity, but it doesn't explore any tension around this. There is never any doubt about who are the bad guys and who are good guys.
Manbiki kazoku (2018)
Beautiful
What exactly is a family? I think this movie questions this concept.
Aquaman (2018)
Full of clichés, but funny.
Won't kill your neurons. Toxic masculinity in the way. Wonderful effects.
The Smiling Lombana (2018)
Intimate.
An interesting guy, portrayed by his granddaughter's eyes. Someone who never met him.
