Not what anyone wants from him
4 March 2024
I hate to say it but he was too lazy when he made this film. We all wanted that Fargo dark comedy and we got a sprinkle of it here and there, but geez the reliance on the lezbo scenes to keep interest up was SOOOOO over used. I heard a comment coming out of the theater, from a woman, who said Why was there so much focus on the lez stuff??. I agree, it used to be edgy or a turn on for guys but this went over the edge a few times. It simply got in the way of what could have been a lot of fun additional dialog between the goons, more random interactions.. etc. No we got flashes or dream vignettes that made no sense at all then more girls kissing. Wtf man??

Zach??
17 January 2024
This isn't his work, is it? He was doing far better when shooting on film and had a DP. This is ego out of control or maybe he's just lazy now. The red camera has ruined a lot of movies and this is partially at play here I think. I was actually into it until the 120lb girl started beating up soldiers. I hate that every other action film has to do this now. Are the writers or directors into some kind of kink thing here? What's with all the little girl beating up men in films!? WE ARE TIRED OF IT. Hey Zach, team up with Larry again and get away from Netflix please. JL and Man of Steel and Watchmen... that's you man.

He was given too much money and time

The Lobster, this is not. That took clever writing, complex interpretation of that writing, and a delicate balance at all times with every shot.

This film isn't that at all. It's a perfect example of a talented guy given too many resources and kinda getting drunk with it and his star. They lived it up making this film and I think he probably laughed to himself that he's making people watch his big expensive experiment.

What bothers me as an artist is, when you boil this all the way down, it's simply another movie filled with all the modern BS every so-called art film is filled with in the '20's. Men/White men suck, women are free when their sexual issues are ironed out, interracial relationships are the only good ones these days and all you need to do is use exaggerated wide lenses, interesting costumes and sets, and bam! You got some film art! Not at all.

Emma should have teamed up with someone else. She did great work here but it was wasted in my eyes.

Umm, is this really real?
15 August 2022
It kills me to think how this kind of thing gets funded when there are lots of truly talented filmmakers out there who never get funding. Was this made by a fresh film-school grad or something? Who would let those fx shots go through the edit?? The holographic phone thing in the car for example was literally worse than a high-school fx film project clip. No joke. Cage must have REALLY needed the little bit of cash these people scrapped together.

Typical woke junk
11 August 2022
Oh I get it Hollyweird, brown girls are tough and cool! Do we really need that in EVERY film now? Do I HAVE to see a 120lb girl beat up a bunch of trained 220lb men, again!? Oh and girls can outrun young men in perfect physical condition of course. For the rest of the film, its a super average adventure romp with questionable delivery from the well-paid actors. I dont think Marky was into this gig at all. They stole from Goonies like 8 times. FORMULA!

More woke, safe junk

You could have made this without resorting to the typical interracial PC casting tropes but like all other shows now, they just have to have a black or two in white family roles to satisfy the extreme leftist hollywood system. I stopped having confidence as soon as the half black daughter appeared. Outside of that, its just a slow moving, poorly written cable network quality show with that awful exposition crammed into dialog thing they all do now. It's just a notch above the sci-fi ch. Stuff we've grown so tired of.

SKIP ep. 2!!
19 February 2022
I'm a big fan of his but this series is a textbook example of a director getting too big of a head and getting no advice and no oversight from anyone at all! I actually had to fast forward ep. 2. It was literally a novel of dialog and over an hour of subtitles about NOTHING. The most boring crap Ive seen in years. I mean seriously, that was enough for me to turn on him. WTF man?? What a waste of production resources and money. YOU NEED TO HAVE EVENTS AND ACTION, you know??? Something has to HAPPEN to have entertainment. I think some of these reviews are planted or there are some sad, lonely nerds out there that need help.

Sterile netflix junk made for kids, I guess?
12 June 2021
No artistic value, just a glossy, fake, CGI fest made for kids and ignorant adults, I assume. Extremely predictable, PC writing, digital plastic feel, token black guy, cheap plot devices in general. I just can't give it anything good, sorry. Netflix is to film what fast food is to the food chain.

Not a movie, but a collection of Vimeo and B-roll videos
15 April 2021
Sorry but this is pretty much the stuff that I see from 100's of timelapse and nature videographers that post daily on Vimeo and Youtube. I think Malick sponsored this as a favor to one of his fans-turned-Broll photographers. Anyone can roll 100's of hours of footage with a digital camera these days and find something to edit from out of it. This was not the case some years ago, and it shows, with more careful projects which this was clearly trying to copy, (See the great Baraka, for example). I think Malick's involvement got better music to edit to than otherwise would have been, and got it out to at least basic streaming, but you'd never see this in a theater when it's all, basically, available free and honestly, gets pretty boring fast. The fans of this are mostly camera techs and other nature photo guys who are likely the ones voting this up.

God awful, overly modern PC BS excuse of a movie
10 March 2021
This became nothing more than an overly slick, over edited, cartoonish version of the original with no clear lead character to root for, but even worse, also a PC fem statement movie like everything else made in the last 10 years. I've had enough... no more amazon for a while or maybe ever. Bring back risk taking film artists from the 70-80's please!

Finally a MOVIE
23 March 2018
There is nothing a snowflake critic tucked away all safe in their little urban home (NY/LA) hates more than a movie celebrating our freedom to defend ourselves with measured violence in return, or a story that celebrates the constitution. I'm not some right-winger at all but people need to see movies like this because that is the real world and we can NEVER allow our rights to go away. We must be able to protect ourselves from others and our own government, ALWAYS!

Not what it seems
20 September 2016
This was a drama, at least that's what I thought at first. I was about half way through and just too many subtle, sorta funny things happened. My gf didn't laugh out loud but I did notice that she too kept making a partial laugh noise. We did a few looks to each other back and forth.

Now I don't mean funny as in, this was written by a comedian funny, but in a very dark or just interesting funny kind of way. Did that make sense? I'd go so far as say there's a little bit of a Kubrick influence here in some fashion.

The landlord guy, played by the only actor I recognized, from Pi, was some smart or maybe just lucky casting. He had a blend of cheesy, dark, sleazy and sort of pathetic traits all mixed into one guy. I wish he had more screen time to say the hard truth. He wasn't the kind of guy you'd want as a neighbor but why did I feel sorry for him regardless? I'm still trying to figure that out.

Sara, the main lead, was an excellent blend of naive, lovable and strong. Wife material! lol

I can't quite explain what I mean about this being a little funny but it's worth a watch. And yes, it IS a drama in the end and it IS a little unconventional but, hey it was skillfully edited and I loved the cinematography as well.

Not his best, by far.
20 September 2016
I don't write reviews but I just had to say something about this film.

Im a huge Clint fan and have been for years but this had some major flaws and I am having trouble looking past them. I am mainly referring to the acting. I have heard that Clint shoots really fast and this movie shows it a lot more than others. The obvious answer is the largely amateur cast he chose for this movie. Did he do it for budget reasons? I assume so but it kind of ruined many parts of the movie for me. That kid is just not actor material. The mother as well. Of course he did a great job but that's not enough. It's as if he was being lazy and wanted to just knock this out as fast as possible.

I also think the singing in the end was just a little bit off for some reason. Worthwhile? Maybe so but I like his other new films more. Watch Mystic River if you want a real Clint directed movie!
