New Moon (1930)
The sky was blue the nights where cold....
Wonderful film. It is a very early talkie and does not feel like an early film the acting is not wooden unlike many other early films and the singing is clear and crisp. Lawrence Tibbett (Captain Michael) plays a charming and sexy if I dare say so lover who charms his way into the heart of the beautiful and angelic voiced Princess Tanya (Grace Moore). I have scene both version of New Moon the Jeanette MacDonald & Nelson Eddy version that apparently had kept the original story line better. I still prefer the 1940 version but, New Moon 1930 gives you the glimpse into a rare talkie treat filled with wonderful songs and set in Russia!
Naughty Marietta (1935)
Ah Sweet Mystery of Life
Wonderful film and the first film to start of a great partnership! Naughty Marietta tells the sweet story about a popular princess who is ordered to marry an old man who is a drunkard. So like any Princess would she go to the ''New World'' to start a fresh where she takes her maids name ''Marietta''. Marietta as a bride for the new world falls head over heels in a hard to get act for the handsome Captain Dick (Nelson Eddy). The most remembered piece about this film is the where they sing ''Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life'' where she is on the staircase and he is at the bottom, the duet is splendidly beautiful and will have you glued to the beautiful voice that is Jeanette MacDonald & Nelson Eddy!
Rose-Marie (1936)
When I'm Calling you oh-oh-oh-oh
Ah Rose Marie the second picture of the singing sweethearts of 1930s America and it is truly wonderful. We meet an Opera diva at the beginning who seems to like getting her own way only for her to soon be on the lookout for her outlaw brother (James Stewart). Rose Marie is a wonderful film filled with wonderful music who could forget Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy duet of Indian Love Call? It features many charming jokes and songs and who could resist an man in uniform? Well Rose Marie can't. Rose Marie has had a commercial DVD released but is only available via a Warner Archive DVD or a Spanish DVD that you have to switch the subtitles of and put the English speaking on via your remote, So if you love operettas and the singing sweethearts I would recommend this film.
