Bird Box (2018)
Once I realized...
Once I realized that this movie was meant to be listened to in a different perspective than it was told from, I liked it a lot better. Those who saw the light experienced pure bliss, while those that refused to look at the light took refuge in a school for the blind.
Escape at Dannemora (2018)
Good, but longer than it needed to be
First of all, Patricia Arquette was sooooo stellar! I don't know how someone so endearing could play someone so unlikeable, but she nailed it. My issue with the series is I felt it was an hour or two longer than it needed to be. ..Lots of long dramatic stares and whatnot. I definitely didn't need the play by play of every chisel stroke in the tunnel. In episode 6, did you really need to give a backstory on a cop you were going to kill 4 minutes later? I felt that too much time was spent on certain things, and then other important aspects of the story were just grazed over. That being said, it is still a very interesting, well-acted mini series.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Queen Censored
What a sugary, surface level biopic of Queen. Where's the dirt? I guess I wanted to see more of Freddie's countless lovers and drug use. I would have liked to learn more about where certain lyrics came from. I would have liked to have learned anything..about the other band members. This seemed very watered down; like a version of Queen's story you could tell your 10 year old. The music of course was a lot of fun throughout. I think Rami's performance was good. It's not his fault they made the prosthetic teeth comically large.
Dumplin' (2018)
The worst movie I've seen in awhile
Most Netflix movies are really mediocre, but this one is so bad it is making me a little angry. I've been shouting at the tv like a crazy person and I'm on my 26th eye roll. Dumplin' is so forced and artificially sentimental. It attempts to be heartwarming and profound, but just keeps falling flat on its stupid face. I do not understand why Jennifer Aniston would have taken this role. I may write her next.
A Family Affair (2015)
They forgot to tell a story.
I really wish I would have listened to my instincts and turned this off 10 minutes in. The bombshell never comes. Grandma gives up like three unrelated pieces of info in the whole documentary. The summary of this documentary is much more compelling than the actual documentary.
The Lobster (2015)
My mouth was hanging open for most of the film
Absolutely fascinating. Yorgos Lanthimos is a mad man and I love him for it. Dogtooth blew my mind. Lobster followed suit and was hands down my favorite movie of 2016. These films are so refreshingly weird and non-formulaic. Where can I stream The Killing of the Sacred Deer? Take my money!!
Suburbicon (2017)
Why do people think this movie is terrible?
I was really disappointed when I started seeing all kinds of bad reviews for Suburbicon pop up. I was so excited to see it! I finally watched it today and I don't know what you guys are talking about. I felt it was a pretty spot on dark comedy. I didn't think it was overly gruesome. I didn't think it was confusing. I didn't think loose ends were left. On the social plane, I've seen reviews that accuse the movie of being racially inflammatory. I've also seen reviews that took the opposite stance and said that the black and white story lines never came together and the black story line was simply used as a backdrop. I don't agree. I thought it was rather entertaining that this white- washed community just attributed all the violence taking place to the new black family in the neighborhood, rather than realizing they had a couple of white sociopaths living next door. It showed how prejudice just promotes ignorance. Pretty solid message if you ask me..
