O Kadhal Kanmani (2015)
Classy and Brilliant!
Maniratnam is one of the finest filmmakers in the south. One of those very few filmmakers who doesn't commercialize his films and turn them mindless. One of those very few filmmakers who doesn't fool the audiences and play cheap. This film proves his integrity yet again. This is not the first time he's doing romantic dramas, he dealt with them before but what makes this film brilliant is it's cast and the intriguing screenplay. It's different from his previous romantic dramas retaining his trademark filming style. It's just about a couple who think that marriage is for fools, fall for each other and continue their relationship without getting married. Eventually they realize how much they love each other, ending up marrying. The lead pair is absolutely amazing. Dulquer is awesome in the role of Aadhi and Nitya as Tara is nothing but brilliant! The scene where they introduce themselves to each other in the church is an example of how brilliant the lead pair is. Along with Dulquer and Nitya there is Prakash Raj who is good as always and Leela Samson is a shocker! The former chairperson of CBFC was great in the role of an Alzheimer's patient, the wife of Prakash Raj's character. Along with the performances, another important aspect which makes this film look stunning is it's beautiful cinematography. Such gorgeousness in every scene. The tracking shot in the shopping mall where the lead pair go to is absolutely brilliant and cool! That's one of the moments I could remember out of all those other great ones. Binding all these elements together close and tight is the music. The soundtrack is kickass. Maniratnam writes some best scenes in the movie. I mean, watching the lead pair act to his direction is such a bliss. One scene where Aadhi and Tara go riding on a motorcycle enjoying their final days of living together, Tara sitting in the back breaks down and confesses that she can't hold her tears anymore. The scene is so poignant and relatable, it just defines how brilliant the actors and the director are. One of the finest films of Maniratnam. Classy and brilliant!
Feast (2014)
Cute and Adorable
Feast is about a cute little puppy Winston and his love to his owner and the food they share. Cute and adorable, this is one of Disney's finest shorts. This short looks so cool and so much better than most of the recent animated features. I mean, I have seen Big Hero 6 and didn't really like it, it was too clichéd and the writing was terrible. But Feast with it's cool idea developed into a finely written plot looks way superior and awesome. People who love their pets enjoy this even more and could relate so much. Needless to say, Winston looks adorable, he is even more faithful. Winston loves his food and his owner and gets him out of sadness which reminds how much a dog would love a man! This short could make all those people who don't have pets feel that they should have one, at least it made me feel that way. The animation used in this short is so pleasant and gives an amazing viewing experience. It's not that 3D animation stuff we see in other animated movies. I want to see feature films with this kind of animation. An adorable short on the whole, deserves it's Oscar.
Whiplash (2014)
Good music, Great performances, Amazing movie!
Some great movies are competing for the Best picture Oscar this year. Along with Boyhood and Birdman, Whiplash is another exhilarating ride! A 19 year old boy who is very ambitious to become one of the greatest drummers joins the best music school in the country. But things start to get a little worse for him. His music teacher who goes so rough on his students to get the best out of them, becomes his nightmare. J.k Simmons was absolutely amazing as the vicious music teacher. He abuses his students, hits them, bullies them, scares them and makes them go through a lot of mental pressure. He remembered me of Hartman from Full Metal Jacket. He totally deserves his supporting actor nomination and I wish he wins it. Miles Teller was brilliant in his part too, the mentally pressured boy who never quits to become what he dreams to. The film has got some good music which keeps the flow so thrilling and editing was good making the film look tight. This without any doubt is one of the best movies I have seen this year along with Boyhood and Birdman. An amazing movie on the whole!
Ugly (2013)
Brilliant work
This is not a happy, cheerful, perky film. Right from the word go, the film is dark and gloomy and as it moves on, we get to see the ugly side of every character. This is an epic tale of deception! A 10 year old girl goes out with her father(Rahul, who is a struggling actor and who gets divorced from the girl's mother Shalini) on a Saturday. The utter negligent Rahul leaves his daughter in his car and goes out to meet with his friend, Chaitanya who is also Rahul's casting producer. He comes back and finds the girl missing. What we get to see from here are people who are extremely ugly and heinous. A cop who takes fun out of a father's anguish, a deceiving and cunning friend who feigns to be a good friend and takes advantage even out of one's worse possible situations, a mother who is an alcoholic, a cop who never loves his wife and make her happy, a brother so wicked that he makes money out of his own sister's nightmare, an actress who betrays and keeps changing her sexual partners. Almost every character in the movie, except for Shalini's second husband Shaumik Bose, is money hungry. As the story unfolds we get to know their true colors one after the other which leaves us stunned and disturbed. Anurag Kashyap who is known for his uncompromising and hard hitting way of making films, excels once again in his direction and story telling. The best thing about this man is that he stays away from clichés and candy floss kind of stuff and makes what he believes in. The ending is gut wrenching and unsettling. The film makes it's point very clear and stays true to it's title. Technically the film is sound as well, cinematography is beautiful and the music is in sync with the mood of the film with metal and rock playing in the background. The performances are so realistic. Everyone did their job so well that we don't really feel they are acting. Be it Girish Kulkarni who asks how the caller id thing works in a tense situation, be it Vineeth Kumar who bursts into loads and loads of cuss words at one point, be it Ronit Roy who is the only one with some concern for the little girl or be it the struggling Rahul Bhat, every one was so organic in their performance including the little girl who played Kali. This is a very well written dark thriller which keeps it's audience hooked from the beginning till the end. All those who love good cinema, this is for you.
PK (2014)
Story of a lost alien
An alien who looks just like a human lands in Rajasthan desert from another planet wearing a locket like signal transmitter around his neck. But just when he lands on earth, his signal transmitter which sends signals to his spaceship i.e which helps him go home gets stolen. The lost alien begins searching for his transmitter in a planet which is very alien to him. Meanwhile in Belgium a girl named Jaggu gets cheated by her love and decides to return her home country India. As the story progresses she meets the alien PK and eventually helps him go home. The alien played by Aamir khan is an absolute delight to watch. The way he lives his life searching for his transmitter thing, the kind of things he do to get it back and the kind of situations he gets stuck in are really so much fun. The first half of the film is realistic, funny and emotional. What follows is a second half which lacks the kind of realism in first half and takes a dramatic turn. PK who is very focused to get his thing back and go home, falls for Jaggu which kind of deviates the purpose of the whole first half of the film. The scene where Bhairo dies is quite dramatic and happens just like that in the film. Eventually PK gets his signal transmitter back but that happens in an even more dramatic way. The film in a way is a satire on how people believe in God and Godmen blindly, but that's just an aspect and the film stays faithful to it's actual story. Boman Irani and Sanjay Dutt looks wasted and Ranbir's cameo at the end is surprising. On the whole it's a good film with lots of fun.
Lingaa (2014)
A good watch
A thief whose grandfather was a Maharaja lives away from his home place because he despises his grandfather for ignoring his father and his family or at least he thinks his grandfather ignored his family. But in a dramatic turn of events he ends up coming to his home place and eventually learns how much of a great man his grandfather really was. The film starts on a passable note and runs creating an impression on the audiences that it's a masala film. Some okay comedy and a couple of songs and passable scenes creates such an impression. But once the flashback starts unfolding, somehow we begin to feel that it's not just a cheap routine masala movie. And as the film progresses it looks more decent. The flashback is an asset to this film which is actually a major portion of it's running length. And another important asset is it's cinematography. The humongous visuals of the dam and the area surrounding it look stunning along with a lot more other visuals! The story is not really new but the way it was told was good. The film takes enough time to narrate the story and scenes without wrapping things up hurriedly. This is the reason why the almost three hour running length of the film doesn't really bother. One scene in particular where a few people discover their Maharaja living an austere life is so natural and is the best scene in the entire movie. After the flashback one would be left with an impression that it's not really a masala film and is something sensible. But just then we get to the climax which features some insane stunts and disturbs the feel. Except for fight sequences and not so great songs it's a fine film. It ends on a satisfying note making it a good watch.
Aagadu (2014)
Routine stuff
This is yet another routine telugu masala film with a predictable plot and clichés all over. If you go into the cinemas expecting something different, you will be disappointed for sure. An orphan boy raised by a cop grows up good and becomes a cop and will be dealing with all the atrocities happening in a particular place with his wits. Later on he comes to know that the antagonist was responsible for killing his brother and takes his revenge. In addition to this you have inserted comedy tracks, insane humor and some absolutely soulless music. The leading lady's role kind of looks like a cameo and has got nothing to do with the story. The lead actor who is capable of giving some fine performance was wasted so to speak and shines only at very few parts. Writing and direction were so poor and routine. There is nothing great to talk about. Just save your time
Rabhasa (2014)
Do not waste your time on this nonsense
First thing is first, this is one of those routine usual mindless idiotic movies you can find. Words can't describe how annoying this film is. A routine story, clichés throughout, good for nothing female leads, gravity defying fight sequences, absolutely insane songs, soulless dialogues, obnoxious camera work and terrible writing all together make this film. The villains are so furious and scary at parts and literally act like clowns at parts and in addition to all this nonsense you have an inserted comedy track which looks so awful. The scary and frightening villains who are possessed to kill the hero from the beginning of the film change their minds and become good at heart just because of a mere speech about how good the hero is. A countless number of characters are thrown in which are absolutely useless and contribute nothing to the story. I have countless other reasons to justify how bad the film is. To put them all into a single sentence 'this is a paisa vasool mindless telugu movie', so you can't really expect anything good from the movie. Stay away from this junk and save your valuable time.
Autonagar Surya (2014)
Do not expect another 'Prasthanam'
If you enter into the cinemas expecting another 'Prasthanam' you will be disappointed for sure. This film looks way amateurish compared to the almost Godfatheresque 'Prasthanam'. It's a paisa vasool film but is a bit better compared to the present mindless telugu films. It's about the place 'Autonagar', the evil politics in the place and how a man stands against the evil. Nothing new regarding the plot but the way it goes is decent so to speak, at least it's not worse. Naga chaitanya is a complete misfit in the role. May be a tough badass role doesn't really suit him. Ananda Krishna Nandu who plays Naga chaitanya's friend is way better in a lot of aspects including delivering the dialogue. Sai kumar did his job. The film looks more like a typical masala film with fast paced scenes, gratuitous comedy, good for nothing female lead and unnecessary songs but thank god the film doesn't have that typical camera work you find in mindless telugu films like too many low angled shots, extensive use of crane and tilting camera angles. The dialogue is sharp but not up to deva katta's mark. The background score is absolutely usual and doesn't do any good. The film starts on an intense note and gets diluted gradually, raises up again and it goes wavering. With evil politics, bloody violence and occasional profanity it's not a bad watch but could have been really better. You do not find that intensity and gorgeousness in story telling which you can find extensively in 'Prasthanam'. The finishing moments of the film look very odd. It's a masala film but a decent one.
Swathi Muthyam (1986)
A Timeless Masterpiece
This without any doubt is one of the best telugu movies ever made and for that matter probably one of the best in the history of Indian cinema. Fantastic writing, fine camera work, great music and brilliant performances make this a timeless masterpiece. K.Viswanath is a great director, one of those few directors out there who can make some absolutely brilliant stuff. This one keeps you completely hooked from the beginning till the end. Absolutely class film making. One important thing which always plays a key role in the film is music and ilayaraja nails it for sure. Some great music blend with brilliant scenes keeps the film live all the time. By 'great music' i mean songs as well as the background score. And what makes this film even great is the brilliant performance of kamal hassan. Sheer brilliance in every scene. His performance makes you laugh and it makes you cry. This film was an official entry for the academy awards in 1986 from India. I just don't understand why it didn't make it to the Oscars. 'Forrest gump' (1994) won all the major categories at the academy awards that year. It was also about a mentally immature man played by tom hanks. But swathi muthyam was out way before 'forrest gump' and never falls behind at any point compared to 'forrest gump' except for visual effects. It really deserves the Oscar nod.
Race Gurram (2014)
This one has got some good laughs
This is another paisa vasool movie but is a bit decent compared to the other recent films. This film has got some good laughs. The first half is good with decent comedy and okay screenplay up until the interval fight sequence. Wonder why all the recent telugu films have fight sequences which defy gravity! The second half is watchable. Songs have got nothing to do with the film, they are just inserted into the film to kill some time. The lead woman's character was well written but was very short and had nothing to do with the story. The lead actor's catchphrase 'deevudaa' looks cool and natural. The lip sync of villain's dialogue was horrible. The worst parts of the film are the gravity defying fight sequences which look so awful and pathetic. And we come to the character 'kill bill' pandey. Yeah it's a spoof of 'chul bul pandey' from dabangg but why the heck is he called 'kill bill' pandey, i mean why 'kill bill'?! Is it just because it rhymes with 'chul bul'? If that is the only reason it is a disgrace on the part of the writer and the director for using 'kill bill' a Tarantino masterpiece just for the sake of comedy!
Yevadu (2014)
Yet another mindless telugu movie
To start things with, this movie is filled with all those typical mindless telugu movie clichés from the beginning till the end. One need to put their mind safe at their house to watch a movie like this. A man loses his lover in a sequence of dramatic events and also half of his face. He returns with a new face, thanks to "face surgery" (or we should say "head transplant" !) and takes revenge on his enemies. He makes a death list of his enemies and kills them one after the other. Sounds like kill bill, isn't it!? But it looks pathetically awful! With unnecessary comedy, songs and with absolutely no logic, ends the first half at the end of which we arrive at a new twist so to speak in the plot. The second half of the movie runs on the twist that unfolds at the intermission and is a mixture of at least half a dozen telugu movies. Like i mentioned, clichés and logic free scenes everywhere. The lead actor at the beginning gets a face surgery, which is said to be very complex in the film, wakes up with his face covered in bandages after 10 months and boy when the doctors remove the bandages, his "new" face looks so stunning with his hair neatly trimmed and dressed! At the finishing minutes of first half, a man identifies the lead actor in traffic and attempts to shoot him, fires three bullets, the lead actor confronts him and the man runs away from him!?? I mean, he still has 3 more bullets left at least, instead of killing the damn person he runs away!? One can find a countless amount of such idiotic things in the film. ahem ahem.. this is a typical paisa vasool movie, so we have to be cool and take things easy. Actors like shashank and kota srinivas rao are wasted and saikumar kind of overdid his part. To sum it up, this is one of those average nonsense movies that you can find. Watch it if you want to kill your precious time.
1 - Nenokkadine (2014)
Way better than the present mindless telugu cinema.
I have to admit that this film was way better than the present usual mindless telugu cinema. Best thing about this movie is that it does not deviate from it's plot with so called "comedy track" and nonsense like that. But this movie has lots of fun and comedy which goes along with the plot. The first half is good and neatly written, the sequences between the lead actor and actress gives loads of fun. Songs are properly placed so to speak and do not let the film deviate from it's plot. One brilliant scene near the end of first half, the one in the washroom, the scene was so entertaining but the continuity error was so clear in the scene, the slider of the gun goes back even though it's loaded and in a brief cut it gets normal and in the next cut it goes back again. The second half was not so gripping like the first one. When i watched the movie it was edited out for 20 minutes because of excessive run time, the cuts were so bad they looked like jump cuts. By the time it comes to the end the story gets too complicated and one can actually wonder if that much of a complication is really required. The scene in which Nasser gets killed was badly made. The stunt sequences are good at times but the bad CGI makes them look unrealistic. The background score was fine. One scene at the end where the lead actor finds his way home by recollecting that rhyme he used to sing, he actually travels miles and miles. Did he used to travel all that distance everyday to reach the school bus?! Anyway, the scene was well made. All those average audiences who are into watching potboiler kind of cinema may not like this movie. But it wasn't intellectually superior either. The twisted screenplay camouflages so many errors. For instance, a huge monstrous truck runs into a car in which the lead actors travel but they manage to survive with almost no injuries. And the lead actor is a popular celebrity but the media or police don't even care when he unleashes chaos on roads, on the top of the buildings and when he goes on shooting people near police stations and roads, not to mention the mass killing at the end of the movie. But then again, its a ray of hope for different cinema in an industry which relies so much on mediocrity
