Polyester (1981)
Funny offbeat classic Waters
I recently had the pleasure of seeing John Waters live show followed by a screening of Polyester and we were spoiled and got the Odorama cards! Aside from Waters being hilarious on stage and wonderfully unpolitically correct, the movie is excellent. Completely offbeat, wonderful dysfunctional family, physical comedy, exaggerated characters makes this a classic comedy, even if a bit outdated. I loved it. I only gave it a 9 because of the sound quality and the slightly outdated look, albeit still excellent. Divine's performance is divine... If you didn't now it was a man, you could almost be fooled. Lulu's performance is over the top, so not very credible, but it makes it all the more funny and ludicrous. Dexter is nuts, plain and simple. One does not see this film for its true like story line, but to see over the top blown up characters that make you laugh. This does just that. However, if you ever have the chance to see Waters,' live show, do not miss it!
Somewhere Between (2011)
touching journey
Having read quite a few reviews describing this film as having a limited audience, I would have to agree. I too have a daughter from China, so I've been following and waiting for the film to come out for some time. However, as a mom to a Chinese girl, this was a very moving film. I highly recommend this to all who have trans-racial adopted children as some of these issues are endemic to adoption in general and a sense of identity some of these girls feel left "in between". As another reader noted, we are left a bit in want for a follow-up on how someone feels when they find their birth family. How do you deal with it when the birth family shows you love now when they left you then? Even if not both parents wanted this separation. How does the adopted mother feel? Otherwise, a very good film. I'd like to hear from people NOT involved in adoption to see what they saw in the movie. And coincidentally, my daughter was also from Hunan thus I went to the same center to get my daughter, so that was a personally emotional moment for me. The girls are all lovely and accomplished, intelligent teenagers.
Couleur de peau: Miel (2012)
Another great animated film
I read the 2 comic strip books and had anxiously been waiting for the film. I loved both. The film goes more into his origins, but in the end, it's very close to the book. The animation and drawings are art. Brilliant. As the mother of an adopted child, it's wonderful to see the subject taken to such a level, both emotionally and artistically. Go see it. The story flows easily and takes you to his origins, or what he remembers of them, to his arrival in Belgium, where he was adopted. There are a few passages missing in the movie from the book, which I would have liked to have seen, but it is still very faithful to the book. Now, I am waiting for the third volume then the second movie. I think it will appeal also to those with no adoption links, but will make you realize some things you may never ave thought of regarding adoption and even family dynamics. Enjoy
Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Incredible performances
I agree with "produpp" that Christopher Waltz as SS Officer "Jew Hunter" deserves an Oscar for his role. And what I love about it, is the irony. If you check his bio out, you'll see he not only is Austrian, but his son is a Rabbi! I love Tarantino and he's outdone himself again. I hope to see Waltz in more US/EU productions in English. Brilliant movie. It's purely fictional, and however violent it is (and it's gory in places) it's still a superb movie. Just see it without preconception of what it is. Although it's been running a while and the theater was relatively empty, people still clapped. Of course, if you speak French, Italian and German (and English of course) then it's a feast for your ears! Wow.
Six Feet Under (2001)
Brilliant
What can I say that has not already been said. I finally saw the whole thing on DVD. It is a must for any fan or anyone who has a remote interest in the series. Aside from superb acting, (even if there are some characters you may dislike) it contains a lot of real life situations, although a bit exaggerated at times (Claire's indifference, 'screw this life' attitude is a bit over the top, though well acted!) and the 'death du jour' are great but beware, if you've lived through a tough death with your family or close friend, it can be tough to see. I cried more than once! But it demystifies death and all the bonuses on the DVDs are great and give more insight into the story, why and characters (though never watched with audio commentary... find those annoying) Buy it, rent it, but watch it. It's simply brilliant. Better than 'Sex and the City' (of course this is drama, not comedy, though some situations are absurd...)
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)
take it for what it is...
this is a great spoof on sci-fi, low budget films. first it has a cast to die for, they are funny, witty, absurd. special effects are of the perfect b-film rate but this is not why you watch the movie, though that's fun too! it's just plain fun and funny. took a lot of imagination to have a rock'n'roller-scientist-wanna-save-the-world in one brilliant performance by Peter Weller. just take it for what it is. A fun, b-sci fi flick with great performances and good actors. forget intellectual bla bla on this one and enjoy! Ellen Barkin and Peter Weller give great performances and the genius of both John Lithgow and Jeff Goldblum, not to mention all the other great appearances, make it a pleasure to watch. I mean rasta aliens, you gotta laugh!
Les choristes (2004)
one of the best movies of 2004
Although Mondain's character was of no real use to the plot and characters, this remains a wonderful, tender movie, full of insight and emotion. This was also a brilliant start for a bunch of kids who have never acted and are the actual singers. It was also filmed during the hottest summer of 2002 in France. Chapeau as they say in France! I have bought the DVD and still have tears at the end of the movie. It is a must see for kids of all ages. The music is wonderful, especially if you speak French, but the melodies are still excellent, no matter what. Kids in Belgium and France are now singing these songs in school. A bit like the Sound of Music was when I was growing up. True classics! Enjoy the movie.
Bride & Prejudice (2004)
fun fun fun
You really get it if you know Jane Austin well... or at least the BBC series of Pride and Prejudice. It is a great, colorful and funny modern-day spoof on her novel. Gorgeous women, cute men, good acting. Not as good as Bend it like Beckham, but great anyway. I think those who rate it low don't get it... take it with a grain of salt, a large popcorn and enjoy. It's Monsoon Wedding meets Jane Austin. Open up your mind, man! It's one of those exaggerated all-out Bollywood musicals, with a touch of spice, love, sex is in the songs instead of out there; it's more fun when it's implied and not obvious. We've been so jaded by seeing it all (at least in Europe, ha ha) that it's more fun to go for the innocent stuff. What's sexier, a naked woman or a belly button and nice cleavage? Or on a man, a nice smile and a cute bum in nice clothes?
