Pétrole! Pétrole! (1981)
Only for French people to digest
It is actually a funny French comedy that does not take itself too serious but behind it absurdities it is an overall amusing movie. However, the humour is mostly situational brought by excellent French comedy actors like Jean-Pierre Marielle, Bernard Blier and Henri Guybet. Translated into another language would rob all its flavour, just like you would not dub a Louis de Funès movie. So yes, I think this comedy cold only be appreciated by people speaking French.
The story is very slim and anecdotal but it does have some very sunny set pieces, like a scene in a swimming pool on a plane. The music score from Éric Demarsan is also quite catchy.
The Village (2004)
Boring and pointless.
This movie was terrible! And yes it had nice photography. With a budget of $65M you can afford good technicians and a great DOP, but that doesn't help you out of your story. The only discovery at the end is that Shyamalan is just another Hollywood director trying to seduce an audience. And even if he was good with actors in other films, in this one they are stiff and boring. There is no character development and for the most part 'I saw dead people'. The movie was based on a child book "Running Out of Time". Unfortunately, they've adapted the story for a public of 6-year-olds. If you want to be frustrated and disappointed, go waste your money on this poor excuse for a movie.
