Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation (1997)
Pure Garbage
This is the biggest insult to TMNT ever. Fortunantely, officially Venus does not exist in canon TMNT. There will never be a female turtle, this took away from the tragic tale of 4 male unique mutants who will never have a family of their own, once gone no more. The biggest mistake was crossing over Power Rangers to TMNT with a horrible episode; the turtle's voices were WRONG and they all acted out of character. They could have done such a better job, better designs and animatronics and NO VENUS.
don't bother with this people...it's cringe worthy material. the lip flap was slow and unnatural looking. they totally disrespected shredder. the main baddie, some dragonlord dude was corny. the turtles looked corny with things hanging off their bodies, what's with the thing around raph's thigh? the silly looking sculpted plastrons!?
If they looked normal, acted in character and got rid of Venus, got rid of the stupid kiddie cartoon sounds...and better writing it could have been good.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003)
The BEST representation of TMNT on TV (spoilers alert)
This show does them justice. All of the characters are they way they SHOULD be.
Raph is a hothead, likes to fight, never turns down a fight, argues with Leo, grouches a lot, but also he hides his true emotions under his tough hide. He almost beat the crud outta Mikey in the first season. He's not that corny sarastic little fart in the old series, although he can be a but sarcastic. I love his voice, I love Raph sounding older and more grown up. There are some things he said that could be taken adultish.
Leonardo is the leader type, but he isn't perfect. He is flawed but strives to be the good son, and the best warrior. He is all into the bushi thing. He hasn't learned how to relax...Raph's told him in the past to relax. Those two argue as usual, Leo and Raph are like two alpha males fighting for the top. But they're also best friends.
Mikey, the little annoyance is just that. He's less like the Mirage Mike though. He loves food, loves to goof off and brag about his stupid Batle Nexus Championship...and how he "beat" Raph in it. Like Raph says, he won by a technicality. He bum didn't even lay a finger of Raph! He is a chicken in some situations but lately he's been growing up and facing his fright. He used to be the type to run than fight but now...don't get in his way!
And Donnie, as usual the geek. He can built anything from anything. Some of the junk he got was from the Utroms leaving stuff behind after they returned home but where does he get most of it? Junkyards?!?!? I dunno...that's the magic of Don. He's a gentle and sweet person, very nice but when he's working on some major experience don't bother him. He'll chase you away!
All four use their weapons as they were meant to be used, there's a bit of realism there. Of course there's no blood. But enemies are taken down with style heh...
Shredder is NOT in every episode. Supposedly he will not return at the end of 3rd season(YAY!)..anyways...I said there were spoilers so don't get mad at me....there's more than just fighting Shredhead and happily ever after. There are enemies like Purple Dragons-the local street gang, mobsters, triceratons, and IL Baxter Stockman-but I think he's finally dead. He's not a stupid fly like in the old series, he's an African-American dude like he should be! He was a great running gag-every time he'd fail, Shredder punished him...he was hacked down to no more than an eyeball with a brainstem living in a bio-fluid of some kind. It was hilarious, every time you see him he would be something else.
The stories are well written, they are not 30 minute commercials. There are 4 and 5 part story arcs, with plots & subplots, twists and turns. ALL of the episodes intertwine, there are crossovers and there are mentions of things past giving a concept of time. Leo might mention something from their childhood...oh yea and we get to see them as 8-10 year olds. they are cute!
Crossovers...Usagi Yojimbo and his pal Gennosuke and Fugitoid, both appeared in the comics.
Everything is darker but it all fits in the new look. Everybody is as they should be. This is the only Sat.AM cartoon worth watching, it gets pretty dramatic sometimes. And other times funny..and even quite touching. (Raph making friends with an old blind lady and her cat was the best so far)
