The Passion of the Christ (2004)
Quite something.
I went into the theatre a heathen, and I came out a heathen. I didn't expect to become "saved" by this movie, otherwise I probably wouldn't have gone. That said, it was an excellent piece of work, almost perfectly depicted. It does a very good job of depicting the end of Jesus's life according to the Bible. It was, of course, a profoundly Catholic presentment, and filled with proselytising messages, but I expected that.
Presenting the movie in the original languages was certainly the right choice; I personally feel that more movies should be like that. The only problem I noticed was the pronunciation of Latin. They should have had my Latin teacher as a dialect coach.
Also, hearing the Aramaic version of Jesus's name, Ieshua, I rather wonder how they got "Jesus" from that, but that's a little off the subject.
As for charges of anti-Semitism, they are ludicrous. The film is no more anti-Semitic than the Gospels. If it is your claim that the Gospels are anti-Semitic, bear in mind that the men who wrote them were Jews. The followers of Jesus at that time were Jews, and considered themselves to be Jews, just as did Jesus himself; they merely believed that Jesus was the Messiah prophesied by the Bible. It is quite clear to the viewer who has half a brain that it is only the Pharisees (and only some of them) and a minority of the other Jews who demand Christ's execution. Blaming the Jews as a people for that is like blaming all Americans for the election of President Bush.
The Man Show (1999)
It was good.
I watched a little of it with the new hosts, and it's just not the same. The old Man Show with Adam and Jimmy was great. I'm gay, and I still liked it; that should tell you something, since it is obviously aimed at heterosexual men. The humour was perverse, often puerile, yes, but it sometimes had a rather sophisticated satirical edge to it, which I always loved. It was the Man Show, featuring the stereotypical male sexist pig, or Porcus Americanus, as I like to call him, but it poked fun at the stereotype, and at various aspects of the American male culture.
Well, at least Adam and Drew are still together. That's something.
Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)
Mostly stupid and mindless
Well, my main complaint about this movie is that it didn't have enough of Ashton Kutcher in his underwear. But it was also not very funny. More semi-nude Ashton would have made up for it, I think. The program guide on the TV gave it one star and called it a `meandering, unfunny comedy.' There were some funny parts. Hal Sparks was pretty good as the leader of the space nerds, as was Andy Dick as the weird fellow in the cage. The rest of it was pretty much just stupid and mindless.
