The Crying Game (1992)
A movie about something different!
I absolutely loved this movie, I had watched it in 1992 and never forgot Dil's character and the scorpion/ frog story. While browsing for interesting movies of the 90's I immediately identified Dil's face on google. I saw it now again, twice, because it is simply an amazing picture with messages that need to be understood about gender, sexuality, personality and identity. Great writing, superb acting (all the actors are doing a great job: Forest Whitaker, the IRA terrorists, the barman, Dave the crazy guy, etc), engaging soundtrack and with something of a moral twist behind it. It looks like a love story but it is really a story about love. You don't see many movies like this anymore. Don't miss out!
The Mission (1986)
Why is that only interesting movies are financial flops?
I know why some critics dislike this movie, it's because Robert de Niro is not the centre of attentions for a change. It's not really about him, it's about indians in the Amazon and it's about a piece of history Americans aren't familiar with (they probably don't even know who the Jesuits is, never mind Portugal or Marquis de Pombal). I absolutely loved it, I think Jeremy Irons was great in it, it was visually and melodically (Ennio Morricone) mesmerising, it made me think about the world being a rubbish place, about evil and power. The only thing I would like to say against it is that it portrays the Jesuits as being all about love and poverty. That is not true. One of the reasons why Marquis de Pombal and the King of Portugal wanted to end the Jesuit order was because they were filthy rich, they owned lands, they had a lot of power in those days. It wasn't just about the slave market, there were political reasons behind. Anyway, I don't know why I never watched this movie on TV, why I only found out about it through Ennio's soundtrack, because it's essentially amazing.
Intimacy (2001)
Only movie I saw where sex scenes aren't pointless
First time I see these two actors, they've been in the theatre for very long, so their performances are top notch quality. The movie takes you to the land of unwelcome emotions and how they can ruin a relationship between two people, it happens everyday between friends, couples, lovers. Truth is sex can hurt without you realising. This movie is great at showing that, as you watch the intensely realistic sex scenes and then you see him alone waiting for her, you can feel his pain. I really liked the soundtrack it was upbeat and light. There are some drawbacks such as the actor playing husband is basically unrealistically ugly and dumb for the woman. It's got some really great scenes and definitely worth watching and it ends as it should end in real life. Very good.
Kids (1995)
Shocking and unforgettable
I saw this movie many years ago, I was probably 18 at the time and I never forgot Talie's face, the disgusting kid, nor the last scene. a couple of days ago, I was at a friends house and she had this DVD and I was like 'hum, I know this guy, but where do I know him from?'. I honestly thought I'd met him in real life, thats how this stuck to my memory. I never socialised with kids like these, but they exist all around us. I remember a girl in my school who was 13 and having sex with lots of people and drove one of my neighbours to suicide cause she dumped him for another kid. He was 14. she and a friend were later expelled from school for urinating in the class. One of my cousins used to hang out with skateboarders and one of his friends died of overdose age 21. they pretty much looked like the group in this movie language and clothes wise. I also met a guy in my hall in Uni who was basically getting laid with every girl he could get his hands on, really disgusting. But what is really shocking about this movie is the reality of aids. and the darkness of the last scene where immorality and irresponsibility turn into creepy stuff like disease, crime and homelessness. It will stay with you for life.
The Social Network (2010)
pseudo intellectual
I hated this movie, didn't even finish watching it, because it just got on my nerves. I think the purpose was to show Zuckerberg and other characters as genius greedy money obsessed and cold opportunistic people. However, it just looked kinda stupid, all those intellectual duels, they could have been fun if the characters had a bit more emotion, but they just turn out boring and stupid. nobody is like that in real life. not even those goldman sachs people when they were being drilled in court behave in this way (and they're as cold and money obsessed as it can be). Mark is a nice relaxed guy, come on... give the kid a break, stop trying to hard to make him a inhuman genius.
The House of Bernarda Alba (1991)
Where did they hide this amazing play?
I watched this play on TV when I was 14 or so. I never watched any theatre on TV and always thought it was the type of boring to death thing. I don't usually go to the theatre. But this play was amazing. I remember I was glued to the screen for whatever long it lasted non stop, the acting superb, the dialogue was heavy and serious but you wouldn't be able to lose your interest, suffocating heat, the repressed emotions culminating in the suicide. I think I still remember every single scene from the play especially Poncia's. Never watched it again and don't know what they've done with it, looks like they prefer to show Jeremy Kyle or Eastenders now. From my modest opinion its an unforgettable acting masterclass, would love to have it on DVD.
