Roseanne: Hair (1990)
Still confused
I love this episode, because for one, and I think I'm in the minority, I really liked Rosanne's hair in that little cut. I thought the salon was a good setup for another group of people to come into the show and kind of wish they would've kept them around longer. What I couldn't understand was why Roseanne felt like that job was so humiliating. Actually, it's a perfectly respectable job and profession. Maybe had she stayed around she could've picked up the skill and that eventually went on to style hair or maybe be the office manager or something like that. I've always struggled with the thought that she felt like she was so much better than the job.
Sherri (2022)
So fun!
Is it me or is this show so much better than the Wendy Williams show? I guess I'm just not a fan of the drama and unnecessary shade so I was never much of a fan of that show. I don't recall what came on before it but for some reason my TV was always on that channel when she came on so I would catch it sometimes. I assumed the new talk show would be much of the same but it's been a pleasant surprise. Sherri makes jokes, but you can tell it's coming from a loving and supportive place. Not to mention, she's just hilarious by nature!
Another reviewer said this as well but I really enjoy the way she's styled! She wears beautiful clothing that fits her body type perfectly, and always looks amazing. This was a great addition to daytime television!
Love & Marriage: DC (2022)
Not perfect but not as bad as the reviews...
I was actually one of the people who didn't care for this show to begin with. But then I thought about it, and I rarely like the first season of shows. I think I'm just not into that "getting to know the cast" season. Ultimately I decided to show wasn't for me and didn't even finish season one. But then I heard on the radio that they touch on topics that are generally taboo within the black community, specifically mental health, so I started Season 2.
I must say, it's really not that bad! I like the ladies a lot more than I did on the first season, specifically, Ashley and Erana. I am a Ready to Love fan so I was already familiar with Clifton and Joi. I'm hoping to see some positivity from the two of them because I was so turned off by their behavior (primarily Joi's) during the reunion show but I digress.
As with any reality show, they have their share of drama, but I'm really enjoying the family interactions. Jamie and little Jamie have so much work to do, but they are trying and they are a complete family unit...something that's so often not displayed on black tv. Ashley is being completely transparent about her perspective of what she experienced as a 16 year old girl. I admire that quality, as that's something I struggle with and it's just refreshing to see.
Like I said, it's not perfect. It's still a reality show and there are definitely moments that we are contrived, but it's not a complete train wreck. Give it a chance!
Ruthless (2020)
Wannabe Handmaid's Tale??
How was this even released without lawsuits galore? It's literally an exact poorly executed replica of the Handmaid's tale. Like what in the actual heck?? And what's with all the rape, nudity, and weirdness?? And the terrible acting! No thanks.
I think Tyler Perry is an amazing person but I certainly wouldn't call myself a TP fan; however, some of his stuff is watchable, more specifically the movies (think Diary of a Mad Black Woman) but this is downright ridiculous. My boyfriend is definitely more forgiving or bad acting and told me to give the storyline a chance but I just can't do it. It's a train wreck!
A New Diva's Christmas Carol (2022)
Ehh...
I watched this because I absolutely adored the original Diva's Christmas Carol with Vanessa Williams. Vanessa Williams is such a great actress, and she plays a mean girl like none other.
This movie was just kind of blah for me. Eva Marcille was really funny as the silly ghost. She kind of reminded me of Sarah Jessica Parker in hocus-pocus. Robin Givens, and Vivica A Fox were their usual selves. This is the second Christmas movie that I've seen Ashanti in and she's not what I would call a bad actress, but I can't quite say she's a good actress either. She looks very much like she's acting, almost like it's a school play or something. That sounds like an insult but I really don't mean it that way because I love Ashanti.
Overall the acting was just OK and we all know the plot, so nothing new there. Watchable but nothing you need to rush home to see. Leave it on the DVR until you're bored.
The Chi (2018)
Season 3 has totally changed the show
I previously rated the show a 9 for seasons one and two. I understand that some things happened with the lead character, Branden; however I'm confused as to what happened with Reg. There was a contract dispute and he refused to be in a relationship with a transgender and was fired? That sounds like reverse discrimination to me.
So much of season three seem forced and unfortunately I won't be watching any longer. It was such an original idea and it's unfortunate that this season has changed the trajectory of the show so much. 😕
I Was Lorena Bobbitt (2020)
Very one sided
Like another reviewer, I went into this movie with high expectations. I will say it was very entertaining but it was also very one sided. Lorena Gallo, as she goes by these days, works very hard to paint herself in the perfect light. She never did anything wrong, she only tried to please her husband, and was very naive/innocent throughout the entirety of the movie.
What the movie doesn't mention is that she stole $7000 from the woman that gave her the job as a nanny and at the nail salon. Or that she was arrested for assault, (albeit years after the incident) for striking her own mother. I'm not stating this to judge Miss Gallo, because we've all done things we aren't proud of; I'm merely pointing out that she's not as innocent as the movie portrays her. At the end of the day, she was still the victim of abuse and that should never be tolerated. I just wish they would have done a better job of showing both sides of the story. FYI This is coming from a woman who's on her side.
