Fix news inserts were the best bits.
29 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As a Diesel Punk story, the book works well and can make you think if you dig past the surface of every man for himself. Sadly the movies barely scratch the surface of the book.

I was disappointed that they made such a point for getting tons of metal from Rearden but then completely cut the weapon of mass destruction it was for. The fact the movie uses that metal for a simple shock torture machine that was developed as some secret project shows just how off it was from the book.

It speaks volumes that none of the actors played the same character in all three films.

Watching Fox News side with John Galt despite their favorite politician supporting Russia and China's leaders is comical and highlights their cognitive dissonance.

Coded Bias (2020)

Misses the main point
10 April 2021
And the main point is that increasing what would have been called beta code even 10 years ago is being pushed out as production ready. As she pointed out with IBM once she pointed out the issue to IBM with their face recognition AI they added examples to their training set and increased accuracy across the board. But that indicates it was not properly tested in the first place. That argues for a more inclusive IT staff and better QA. So that shows their first argument against some merit but could be fixed without much difficulty. So the solution ought to be to fix not ban.

The second argument of what if our government becomes like China is flawed as well. The face recognition AIs are going going to get better even if we do not work on them here someone will. Anything useful can also be used as a weapon. So if the government does want to use face recognition they will just get it. Probably better to have a known working system than one bought hasily and rushed into place.

It is odd to they barely mention any AI or ML outside of face recognition despite face recognition being a small part of what is out there.

All in all might be good to get you to started on research of your own but mostly misdirected furry.

Pretty funny.
7 March 2021
Falls into that so bad it is funny category. Everything screams low budget and the the acting is over the top but that just kind of helps make it that much more funny. Think parody of a monster hunter show like Wayans might have made before they made it big.

Kind of falls aprt at the end
5 February 2021
Builds an interesting premise / world and then they go off on a tangent that does not jive with the rest of the movie. Maybe they cut some needed scenes from earlier in the movie that tied the end to the rest of the film. Maybe a diff crew finished the movie and could not reshoot the start. Hard to say but it would be better if i was consistent.

You need to stick with it
26 January 2021
This starts off painfully slow but with each episode it gets better. Granted there are a few iffy plot points and some bits are predictable but in the end a good effort.

Note watch with closed captioning on the see where the dialog differs from the script. Nothing major but interesting changes in places.

Sounds like it might be interesting but it is not

Camera work might give you motion sickness.

Acting mostly bad.

Many scenes are animated and at first you might think they ran out of money so used animation to finish missing scenes. By the end you will be thinking it was supposed to be animated and they ran out of money so got some friends to live act the remaining scenes.

As I write this I notice only one episode is listed here though all 7 on Amazon. I would assume unlike most I made it through all 7. Mainly to see how they explained Lucky getting to the UK but they never do. Generally I'd give anything I made it all the way through at least 5 stars but the ending was so bad. Again it appears they had planned more episodes but about 3/4 through the 7th they just decided to end it quick.

Needs a tech consultant.
18 February 2020
I get the points they are trying to make but despite sticking actual code on screens, Mr. Robot style (though in this case often where is makes no sense to be there), they pretty much missed the boat on the tech. For instance the drones are smart enough to learn to predict out comes from actions and even monitor your vitals to sense how nervous or angry you are but ignore differing outcomes and are not only totally confused by basic tampering but do not report tampering even when that results in them going offline. Even the most basic security camera systems are better than that. That is like designing a plane to crash instead of land.

In all basically the plot is a cross between Robocop (corporate take over of government) and Person of Interest (rise of the surveillance state) though both of those are closer to reality of where tech actually is going. Even if you are not technical enough to notice those flaws you might make out the other basic plot holes. If you can ignore all that though other wise it is a half decent who-done-it.

Super Force (1990–1992)
4/10
This was made in 1990?
13 November 2019
Unlike most of the reviews here I did not remember this show though it was definitely the kind of thing I would have watched then and now. I bought it as part of a DVD set of 6 classic SciFi shows. Having just watched The Powers of Matthew Star (1982-1983) I was expecting a bit more from this one, it being newer, but the visuals were so bad it felt like a jump backwards in time. Automan made in 1983 has better graphics and effects. Much less Max Headroom (1987-1988) For example the "AI" in this show is not even 8 bit graphics level and would not be recognizable as a face if they did not tell you it was. Even the movie, the series was based on, is so cheap they used an Apollo command module model painted gold as a Mars craft and the super suit looks like it is mainly made from football pads. I guess they spent all the budget on the bike since it appears to be the one prop they spent time on. The video quality was the worst of the set. I've seen low speed VCR recordings the looked better. Could have been a bad transfer but a few screens did look almost as as clear as the The Immortal (1969-1971) also in the set. The plots seemed as bad as the visuals. The chessey The Powers of Matthew Star was more believable. In short I'm amazed they made a series after the movie much less that it made it to 48 episodes. Especially given the other shows out around that time that I loved like: Alien Nation (1989-1990) Quantum Leap (1989-1993) Something Is Out There (I) (1988-1989) Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)

I could not even make it through all of the Super Force episodes.

Note the fact that the show takes place in 2020 does add some humor to it with 2020 just a few couple away.

One point not covered in the other reviews
9 June 2019
While this is a lighthearted movie those that have seen the iconic 1971 Vanishing Point you will see a lot of parallels along the way. So much so before finding out it was a remake I thought it might be a humorous retake on Vanishing Point.

See before reading the book. Then read the book.
25 July 2018
Always thought the book would make a great movie. It just seemed written for the screen but after seeing the movie I'm thinking they should have at least gone with a trilogy if not a mini series. It is still good but they had to cut so much out it feels almost like they leaped through it. Kind of like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy though retaining more of the original feel. If you liked this movie you REALLY need to check out the book to see what you missed.

This has a similar child like view of the world but it not near as funny. Much better visuals though.

Check out the original BBC mini series instead
2 August 2017
Even with the cheap and dated effects and alien suits the mini series is far superior and way more faithful to the books and radio series. While the books, BBC mini series and radio series all differ from each other, this version appears to have been done by someone that was only told about the books. The high points are mostly there but detail is lost and it goes off on tangents as well. Granted the effects are way better than the original. If you have not seen/heard/read the stories before much less are a hard core fan of them you would probably enjoy this version a lot more.

Another Cliff notes version of a great book
19 January 2014
I can understand a lot of the bad reviews since they seemed a bit random in what they pulled from the book and what they left out. So if you have not read the book you see a lot of bits that do not seem to be needed / part of the plot. And some of the altered dialog will make you cringe. So will the pronunciations if you are used to Tony Hillerman reading his books. Then there is Emma who is not supposed to be in this story because she died before it starts and screws up the plots of future films. But if you have read the book you will probably enjoy seeing the book on the screen. Alex Rice is just as stunning as she was her Wonderfalls appearance. If Adam Beach and Wes Studi had the same sort of screen presence you probably would not notice the missing bits as much. Dawn Lewis, while gorgeous in this, seems as totally out of place as an anthropologist as Rebecca Holden did as a mechanic in Knight Rider. Both Rice and Lewis tend to dominate the scenes they are in which can kind of lead the viewer, that does not know the book, off track since a lot of their character's linkage to the plots were cut from the film.
