The Perfect Stranger (2005)
This "will" be the best movie you ever see!
I am not a religious person in any way shape or form. I am a firm believer in evolution, but I do have an open mind when it comes to God, or at least a higher authority.
I have always regarded the Bible as the biggest story book in the world, I have two Bibles, , but I've never read them.
This movie hooked me to my chair......
Here we have a simple premise of a woman talking to a complete stranger in a restaurant who claims to be Jesus, this is where everything takes place. Naturally there is a beginning to this movie which features scenes elsewhere, but the crux, the heart of this movie is set in the restaurant....
She asks questions, he/Jesus, answers them, and boy does he surprise her with his answers, he enlightens her....
The two actors play their roles beautifully, sincerely, and it is a pleasure to watch and to listen.
There is a sort of twist at the end, which only adds punch to the whole movie.
This is a Christian movie, and I have seen many Christian movies, because they are a teaching in how to live our lives, and I say this as a non religious person, which I still am.
For anybody reading this who thinks that going to Church everyday, and doing good deeds will get you into heaven, forget it, it wont.
The only way to truly to get into heaven, is by letting Jesus and God, into your life ""completely""
Its no good going to Church, praying, then going home and kicking the dog, forget it. For Church goers who do this, you are using the Church as a crutch.
Christianity has long gone from the Western World. It is all about greed and selfishness now.
I regard this movie as a Bible. I will see it again and again. It is the best movie "YOU" will ever see.
I congratulate all involved with its making.
To all reading this, please see this movie, and above all "listen", and remember i'm not a religious person, but this well scripted dialogue between two strangers, held me to my seat from beginning to end.
"SEE IT"!
Supergirl (2015)
Excellent. How do they get Supergirl to "appear" to fly ?????????
I was raised on the DC comics of Superman. Then I saw the first Superman movie, it was of course, brilliant.
Now when it comes to Supergirl, my only question is, how do they make her "appear" to fly. ??
When I see our heroin zooming across the sky, I wonder how do they do it ?..
Special effects in cinema today are so realistic, the movie makers can land someone on mars, crash trains, and bring down airplanes
The cinema has come a long way since the stop go animation of Ray Harryhausen, digital is everything today. But in Supergirl we have a young lady who dons the cape and flies across the skies in a split second. How do they do that ?????
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)
If you have a heart and imagination you will enjoy this movie.
They say there is nothing stranger than folk, and reading some truly negative reviews on here proves it.
I thought this movie was delightful, the special effects were superb.
This film had humour and adventure, and the cast played it well.
I am not a reader of books, but am now tempted to read the titles mentioned in this film.
The great writers of the past, lent to the imagination, just as this movie does.
Its basically a light heart frothy romp, centered round Jules Verne's 19th-century novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island again a novel by Jules Verne, published in 1874.
Take your kids to see this film, you wont regret it.
Jurassic World (2015)
Absolute rubbish.
Jurassic Park (1993) Director: Steven Spielberg Writer: Michael Crichton, was a one off, and it was beautiful and a wonder of special effects that took us back a billion years to when the Dinosaurs ruled the earth.
Jurassic World, had all the special effects, but that's it, I found it shallow rubbish.
I was on the side of the Dinosaurs throughout this film, as they devoured the humans.
There was no heart in this film, no soul.
Just a lot of well crafted special effect Dinosaurs, getting their own back on the human beings, and frankly, I couldn't blame them.
The Odd Couple (2015)
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.
America has managed some superbly crafted TV series. In no order of merit, Hill Street Blues, L.A Law, E.R. and NYPD Blue. So, what happened,,,,,here ?????.
Someone has managed to take the superbly written Odd Couple, by Neil Simon, and turn it into the biggest load of shallow junk I've ever struggled with, I say struggled, because I truly wanted to like it, and I am also amazed that Mathew Perry is involved with the production of this series.?????
I don't need to tell mature film fans, that the original Odd Couple movie is a classic. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau hit the nail right on the head. Thanks to the genius script writing of Neil Simon.
I honestly cannot understand why Mathew Perry wanted any part of this garbage?????
If American can touch base with superb human drama's as above, why cant they do the same with comedy.???????. Mathew Perry, you are acting your heart out with what amounts to shallow junk......
12 Wishes of Christmas (2011)
What about the dog ?
I give every Christmas movie out there 10 stars, because Christmas does what it does to the world, it makes everyone act nice to each other for just a few days, then everybody goes back to being introverted, to put it mildly. But I give this one two stars due to the awfully written story line, it was a wasted opportunity.
What would you do if an elf gave you 12 wishes for Christmas ?, and your lovely little dog was in the pound because your landlord said, "no dogs"!
Well the first thing I would do is wish for my dog to be with me again, but not our heroin, her wish list doesn't even receive depth of thought, her wishes are all about me me me, material goodies.
I struggled with this film, even though the story triumphs when things go wrong with her 12 wishes and everything she has wished for turns sour, it is then the elf tells her to look to her heart, and this she does., and everything turns out all right in the end.
I have a Yorkie myself, and this film made me give her an extra extra hug. And she gave me extra licks......
Along Came a Nanny (2014)
What loud music ?
A reviewer in the USA complains in his/her review about loud music throughout this film. I watched this film and enjoyed it "throughout". There was no "loud" music.
Here we have a detective going under cover as a nanny to solve burglaries in a local community.
He gets to know the local ladies, as they talk, and I noticed not a bit of litter could be seen on the streets.
He gets sacked from the job due to a misunderstanding between his employer and his police chief. But is soon back again.
This was a light hearted movie, frothy and fun, with an ending that rounds things off nicely.
All I can say is another 10 stars from Hallmark.
The Christmas Ornament (2013)
You to have to have a heart and a soul to enjoy this very nice warm hearted film.
My wife of a 22 year marriage passed from cancer in 2014. I still cant believe she has gone, and this will be my second Christmas alone. So I had a real special reason for watching this film, and I can only say it was well worth the watch.
I knew I would relate to the lead female role and I did, I felt every expression, every doubt.
Her female friend was simply and equally great in the film.
Christmas movies always always have nice tie up endings, and don't we wish it was like this in real life ?
Everybody handles their grief differently, I for one will never celebrate Christmas again, where as the woman in the lead role did, and she found happiness if I recall correctly, less than a year after the demise of her husband.
My wife and I used to watch Hallmark Christmas movies on DVD every year, and I know she would have loved this film.
So on behalf of my wife and myself, we give this movie 10 stars, I've ticked spoilers, but I don't think there were any.
If there are any ladies out there who have lost their husbands, and you also enjoyed this film, you can contact me at the following email address if you wish. michaelthompson533@btinternet.com
Al Capone (1959)
Rod Steiger was wrong for this role.
On the face of it, I was truly looking forward to seeing this movie because Rod Steiger is one of my all time favorite actors.
But as the film progressed, I felt there was something wrong ?, something amiss ?, and then I realized that after seeing Rod Steiger in many films, I realized that there was nothing knew here as far as his acting was concerned, and I was left wondering if Rod Steiger had seen any footage of Al Capone in order to portray the gangsters character ?
All in all I felt cheated by Rod Steiger's overall performance, because I felt he was simply being himself as in other roles.
I would also suggest that another not so well known actor should have played the part, because Rod Steiger is a big name in the movie business and therefore his stature for me was bigger than the man he was supposed to be portraying.
John Wick (2014)
A rip roaring thriller spoiled by the death of a dog.
I hate movies which include dogs, because somewhere along the line that dog is going to get killed.
I guess I'm a sensitive man, but at the beginning of this movie when our hero receives a present of a little spaniel dog from his wife who had died of cancer, this film took on heart, but it was all short lived, because the dog got killed by thugs who beat up our hero John Wick and then you hear the dog yelp and then you see the dog from it's back, lying dead by John Wick when he wakes up from his beating.
John Wick the character has heart, he cries at his wife's grave side, I lost my own wife to cancer in September last year 2014, so I could empathize with the character.
All in all this was a very good movie with excellently rehearsed fight scenes, very cleverly directed. But getting passed the doggy being killed, kind of spoiled it for me.
Bailout: The Age of Greed (2013)
Awful, just bloody awful. Not entertaining, depressing.
This movie was not entertainment, or brilliant, it was depressing. America is the crux of free market capitalism on this planet. I use the word crux instead of heart, because the free market system has no heart, its dog eat dog. People knowingly gamble their lives on the toss of a dice known as "the market".
The same people even vote for the system, and when they lose they don't like it.
I hated this film for that reason. If we deal with fire we have to expect to get burned.
Yet we don't, we expect to win and win again.
The main character in this movie loses everything, including his wife, she commits suicide because she doesn't want to be a burden to her husband, he then goes on a rampage killing those involved in his bank, with a machine gun....
Her husband invested their life savings in stocks and shares and lost. The free market runs America, mature people cant expect to win all the time.
Oklahoma! (1955)
They don't write musicals like this any more, because they haven't got the writers.
Lorenz Hart was Richard Rodgers first lyric writing partner. Oscar Hammerstein 2nd was Richard Rodgers second lyric writing partner.
The world would probably never have had Oklahoma if Lorenz Hart had not refused to write the lyrics with Richard Rodgers because at that time Mr Hart wanted to go off to Mexico, he didn't think he could write lyrics about country folk.
So wasn't it a wonderful coincidence how at that moment in time, that Oscar Hammerstein 2nd had read the same book as Richard Rodgers Green Grow the Lilacs by Lynn Riggs. Both of them thought of how this homespun piece of pure Americana cowboys would make a great subject for a very different type of musical play they wanted to collaborate on, where by the songs were character and plot driven. And the rest is musical history.
Oscar Hammerstein 2nd always wrote the words "first" to all of the musicals he and composer Richard Rodgers wrote. My heading says that they don't write musicals like this any more, and they don't, because they haven't got the writers, is spot on. Gone are the days of tuneful melody, and mature easy to listen to words.
Oscar Hammerstein 2nd was a craftsman at writing lyrics, Equally so was Richard Rodgers at coming up with a suitable melody.
Oklahoma was their first musical, originally entitled "Away we go", but soon changed to what we know today.....
Oklahoma is simply Joyful brilliance, it leaves you feeling happy inside. You will hum the tunes going into the theatre, and leaving.
We will never see or hear the likes of Richard Rodgers or Oscar Hammerstein 2nd again.
L'inconnu du lac (2013)
The lake is the star
I am not a gay man, and so I can say that this film had a beauty, it wasn't porn, it was about gay men on a lake, doing what any couple's do, talking etc etc.
The film didn't have a core story, it was like watching a poem without words, with the lake being the observer.
If find continental films very poetic in most case, very philosophical, this movie tended to be this way.
Rating this movie is not easy because it did have quality. I have given it 4.
It wasn't porn, it was slow, chatty, highly sexual, and it gave an overview of the world of gay men.
Prince of Darkness (1987)
I guess I either don't like John Carpenter, or I didn't like this film, or I don't like him or this film
I guess I either don't like John Carpenter ?, or I didn't like this film ?, or I don't like him or this film ?
Sorry folks it just wasn't me. I get sick of meaningless gore and thumping background music which is supposed to be atmospheric ?
I like the supernatural in films, but this film was just bloody boring, it told me nothing, it didn't try to tell me anything.
John Carpenter has no subtlety. John Carpenter's Fog was the best
I've ticked spoilers but I don't think there are any.
The Prince of darkness is the devil, he is in another dimension ready to pull you through.
This movie was boring garbage.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
Ben Stiller is no Danny Kaye, and this movie is no Walter Mitty.
I don't want to be cruel to Ben Stiller, but this movie will be crap to anybody who has seen the original. Ben Stiller played Walter Mitty one dimensional. ie not funny. Danny Kaye played Walter Mitty multi dimensional, very funny, as only Danny Kaye could do in the Hollywood of the day.
Ben Stiller could replace Norman Wisdom in any remake of Norman Wisdom Movies. But The Secret Life of Walter Mitty?, forget it.
I could write for a week about how bad this film was. But I wont.
I've ticked spoilers but I don't think I've left any.
The biggest disappointment for me was Ben Stiller came across far to much like Norman Wisdom.
Danny Kaye's original Walter Mitty was exceptional. This remake is just boring. I have read most of the positive reviews. These people must have watched a different movie.
World War Z (2013)
Boring.!!.
I detest any film about zombies because they are the plot. I just felt like Brad Pit cannot possibly be in something boring, can he ?????
I like Brad Pit, he is a modern Robert Redford in my view, but this film is just the same old zombie theme, albeit with excellent special effects, oh yes!!.
It starts with the usual family man stuff, but soon goes down hill fast when the zombies appear, and they do appear in a traffic jam, which Brad Pit is caught in, and the rest of the film is about him and his family trying to escape the zombies.
Its a new twist on an old tale.
This is my opinion of this film, and i'm sticking with it.
1 out of 10.
The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
Everyone has different opinions. This is mine. What was the point of this film ?, I know, "Bucks".
The original was making a point. This film squandered the point. Wasted the point. In favor of carnage upon carnage.
When in a free market system which pushes wages and conditions down to the lowest common denominator, and you end up with ordinary people in low waged, insecure jobs, and the Government allow for a "period" of time for people to do anything they like just to let off steam, but its the rich with all the power, then something has to give.
The original had a simple message which could have been explored more, This film lost the message in favor of excess violence which we can see in countless other films.
I give this movie one out of ten because it didn't really need to be made. But it was because we are living in violent times. End of bloody story !!
The Purge (2013)
A brilliant observation of things to come the way things are going.
Forget the critics. Some people must have watched this movie with their heads in the sand.
Free market capitalism continues to brainwash us while robbing us of our dignity into homeless and poverty. The anger is kept inside because polite suburban society doesn't want to see what's before their very eyes.
This movie superbly delivers to us, the ostentatious pretentiousness of middle class suburbia, and uncovers it.
I was on the edge of my seat throughout this excellent movie. In fact while I was watching it, I was writing this review in my mind...
Both in America and England, we are being brainwashed by both the media, the politicians, and the right wing press, to consider the less fortunate as undesirables, and this movie depicts what would happen if our worst instincts became legal for 12 hours a week. Be warned, be very warned.
The Reunion (2011)
An excellent movie, with a twist.
This was an excellent movie about a deceased father who leaves his adults kids a fortune if they can all get together and run a business for two years.
The big problem is that the kids have never got along, too much negative baggage from childhood. So they have to learn, and they do, the hard way.
There is a twist in this film I never saw coming.
I've read some of the other reviews, and some were negative. In my opinion this is a good solid fun film that's easy to watch.
Go for it. 10/10 from me.
Beneath (2013)
I agree with every negative review.
Frankly I don't know how these young actors could keep straight faces while making this stupid movie, yes I said stupid. Also I don't understand how anybody and everybody involved just did not refuse to make this movie.?????
This movie could have been a bit better if the giant fish in the river had not looked so false. It looked like a huge wind up toy.
It looked like it come from the puppet TV series Stingray.
Also I've seen many rubbish movies, and so I cant understand why they are made ??????. Why would a director, direct a rubbish film in general.???.
In the movie world today there are so many unanswered questions.
Part of the story line in this film is about several young people suddenly without oars to get their boat to back to land, so what do they do with their time ?????. Argue amongst themselves. I felt like telling them all to shut bloody, up!
This movie was frustratingly stupid. End of story.
13 Sins (2014)
After the first 20 minutes if this film doesn't grip you by your pants until the final, nothing will
Compelling. Gripping. Different. This is not a horror film, it is a different type of thriller.
Putting things simply, a salesman down on his luck in a huge way, whilst waiting for traffic lights to change from red to go, receives a strange message on his cell phone to take on 13 tasks, when completed he will given a fortune into his bank account, but he has to follow the rules and complete each task, and as he completes each task, money will automatically be placed in his bank account.
As each task gets increasingly harder, the tension mounts up. You will be on the edge of your seat at the final.
10 out of 10 from me.
Airplane vs. Volcano (2014)
Just use your imagination folks and enjoy a cracker of a disaster movie.
I read most of the reviews about this movie and they all left me thinking, what the hell ???????????????????.
Doesn't anybody have that child's imagination any more ?.
I found the movie to have first class special effects, macho over the top acting which suited this movie perfectly.
I was on the edge of my seat throughout the film.
I've ticked for spoilers in my review, but I don't think there are any.
Suffice to say everybody has their opinions, but I thank goodness, I still have my imagination to enjoy this way over the top disaster movie.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013)
Excellent, but for one tiny little thing ?????????????
This was a masterpiece of wizardry's, but for one tiny little thing. The "f" word.
The leading characters were tongue in cheek, arrogant, and truly brilliant, but the "f" word was used several times and it put me off.
I was hooked on the story from the outset, two witch hunters. The way it was played was masterful.
The witches were truly awesome and the whole film was put together beautifully.
But why did the writers have to give the woman lead, the "f" word, ?, surely this belongs in the 21st century.
The Den (2013)
Top notch nail biting thriller, once it gets going, but with lousy ending.
Don't read if you don't want to know the ending.
Its hard for me to write about this, because I don't really know what to say. ?????. All I know is, its about a girl on web cam talking to people world wide who becomes the target of a killer.
The films is slow, but once it gets going will have you on the edge of your seat, I was.!
The ending was lousy, it annoyed me.
It turns out there was more than one killer, why ?, who were they ?.
At the end we get a shot of a father's head sitting by his computer getting on the site the girl had cultivated. He turns round when his daughter calls him. Then credits roll.
30 Days of Night (2007)
Everybody has an opinion, here's mine.
What a load of shallow pointless garbage.
Yes the the effects were good, the vampires faces were good, there was gore and violence, but that was it. There was no depth, or real story line.
Due to this movie I now know that I wont be watching any more films about vampires.
I guess its all a question of "taste", no pun intended there "fangs" very much, how often have you heard that one ?
The "point" I'm making ( there's another one ), is that the vampires appear from nowhere, do their thing, and that's it.
I couldn't wait for the film to finish, it was crap, certainly not to my "taste", ( there's another one )..........
