Penn & Teller: Bullshit! (2003–2010)
10/10
Funny and serious.
11 May 2009
Penn & Teller: Bullshit! Is something else. Imagine watching a mix between Mythbusters and South Park - and you will pretty much have Bullshit apart from the occasional magic and illusion performance.

It makes its living portraying many different organizations, big or small, from many outskirts of life which the hosts deem to be based on fraudulent premises.

The format seems to have all matter of audiences in mind, as it explores everything from conspiracy theories, prostitution, porn, and 9/11 attacks - to the love of dogs and belief in the supernatural abilities of dolphins.

I am a skeptic myself, and have found myself agreeing with the series on all but one of the topics. Some of the arguments portrayed against the ideologies and systems they debunk are very well grounded in rationale and logic, while at other times, they attack it vigorously with inane attempts humor. Most of these attempts are successful, and to use the Bullshit rhetoric: 'Is f***** goddamn f*** f*** funny as f***'.

To say that their evaluation of the topics at hand is unbiased, would be ridiculous - as it is quite clear from the beginning that the off-hand comments delivered seem to be handpicked. The obvious bias is portrayed in such a way that it seems overblown, and this heightens the comedic value, and makes you forgive a lot of the degradation.

If you are conservative, this may not be an interesting watch, unless you are highly sadistic - as you can be fairly certain that a big part of your belief-systems will be challenged through-out the series.

Sometimes, in order to target a broader audience, the attempts at humor through shock-value can perhaps be a bit much to your average viewer. Some of the arguments they use are not grounded in scientific studies but rather common sense or cultural standards. They will degrade the opposition to a huge extent, sometimes unnecessarily, in order to score 'frat points'.

Do not be fooled by this however, as there is so much intelligence behind the seemingly inane comedy-show that I will recommend it to any viewer who enjoys challenging the gray matter between their ears. The show is constantly walking a fine line between funny, or serious. Cynical or critical. Reasonable, or outrageous. And it manages to come across well enough to sneak onto the comedy scene, while at the same time getting its vital points across . It is beautifully designed and executed in this manner, and does it far better than any other shows I have seen thus far.

All in all, Bullshit! is a challenge to your intellect and your belief-system all summed up with a high dose of rude in-your-face humor and dark comedy unlike anything I have seen on TV before. No matter who you are, if you are interested in truth - watch it.

Warning: Spoilers
It's just evil to make you get hooked to this series, and force you to sit through the end. Nothing less. The first few episodes were watchable mostly because of the eye-candy. The animation is superb, and I got to admit... I absolutely love Hannah Spearitt (Abby).

It's like a mix of Jurassic Park, a random horror series, and Stargate without the clever twists. It all seems a bit new in the first couple of episodes, and all the inconsistencies and intelligence-insulting story lines is forgivable.

As the episodes progress, all the holes in the script begin to become all too obvious though. Now, in season 3, it's like watching a science fiction parody. It simply seems like the writers did'nt even bother to go through the script a second time, just passing it along to the director without any thought! Episode 2, and they have hired a woman to do research into mythology behind the 'anomalies', trying to find patterns in order to make educated guesses on when and where the next anomaly will appear. But apparently, she did'nt even bother to give the team that investigates the site any information about it whatsoever.

The prehistoric animals are all messed up. Apparently nothing can scare them, and they attack anything in sight. I remember a scene where a group of citizens got horribly mauled by some worms that went through an anomaly, but when it attacked the heroes, it barely made any mark.

I could name so many problems with the script, but it's easier to just give the summary: Clearly, the concept of the series was to make a show that had dinosaurs in them which really looked good - and they succeeded. It does look pretty nice. But there is no new ideas, they took it all from various previous shows creating the most uninspired Hollywood text-book science fiction series I have seen in a long time.

The acting is alright, but all the duologue's are boring attempts at creating a would-be chemistry that we all have seen far too many times.

If you're really bored, then watch it. Just know, that after the first season, it may prove more inspiring and exiting to look at a coffee pot.

Donnie Darko (2001)
A masterpiece compareable to any David Lynch movie.
23 February 2004
This movie is absolutely brilliant. At first, id like to point out that after you've seen it, it will be hard to figure out what it was actually about. It's like a puzzle that you have to solve yourself. According to, that almost everyone has different oppinions on what the plot on this movie actually is all about. The only thing people who has given it a second thought seem to agree about, is the fact that it's very very good.

My conclusion is, that it's filled with hints that go all across the movie. It's filled with morales and ethics, hidden suggestions, and mindbuggling scenes. The movie tells different stories to all it's viewers, who always end up astonished by it's originality. But the creation of it, i believe, was'nt intended to be any sort of defined story - though many seem to think so. If it is, the story would have been made just like you and i are going to make it, figuring out all the small concepts of the movie, and trying to figure out our own final understanding that hopefully suits fine according to our personality. To make a movie this deep on purpose just seems impossible.

If i was to say my oppinion, i'd say that Donnie Darko actually is some kind of superhero. He found a timetraveling portal - that not only traveles trough time - but also to a different dimension. He uses his own self¹ to persuade the people at the destination dimension to lead donnie² into an act, that will make him² save his nearest family. It all ends up with the 2 universes collapsing, and exchanging some people through them, so the people that stay behind Donnie Darko will be almost unaware to what have happened - due to Donnie's and the movies perfection in the act. A perfection that will only claim one loss, which you will see if you watch this extremely good movie. :)

I'll give it 10/10.
