Pieces of April (2003)
Katie Holmes's best work ever!
Katie Holmes stars as a young woman in New York City, trying to get through a Thanksgiving holiday as family drama unfolds. It sounds like typical chick-flick stuff, but Pieces of April is actually a story anybody can enjoy, because it's all about family- a subject everybody can relate to. Katie Holmes, who was never my favorite actress during her Dawsons Creek years, totally won me over with this intelligent, moving performance. She's believable in the role- if only she'd stuck with natural parts like this, instead of biting off more than she can chew, like in Batman Begins! But back to Pieces of April... It's the perfect story if you're dreading the upcoming family reunion- it's a reminder that we all have to give our loved ones some respect, even if we're not that much alike.
The Deep End (2001)
Tilda Swinton in a breakout role, in a movie that could have been better...
Tilda Swinton is definitely on the rise. I've admired her work ever since this movie, and I've noticed her getting more high profile films since, such as Adaptation and Constantine. She definitely pulls off a lead role very well in The Deep End, but unfortunately, the movie itself isn't as interesting as her performance. She's basically the only reason I kept watching as the story got weird. In The Deep End, she's the mother of a confused teen, who gets involved in his trouble lifestyle. As the plot thickens, she goes from trying to protect her son to committing some serious crimes herself. All in all, this is worth seeing only for her work in the role.
