Cobra Kai (2018)
Cobra Kai Amazing Arc
Fan theories started rising with the internet in 2000, that Laruso was the real villain of KK.
Who would have thought that we got to see Johnnys PoV.
This is what Cobra Kai is all about.
It not only the nostalgia for those of us that were of age when the movie came out( i was 12 and on summer of 84 i got bullied a lot).
Its mostly regarding that all characters have a past and a reason for being what they are , which is exactly what life is all about. They truly look genuine .
The fact that in the 3rd season we got to see how Krease became to be, is what makes this show great. They allowed for character background. We even got Ali and Kumiko .
There are some cheesy moments (like the speech in front of the council (life dont work that way) and the fact that a lot of the fights have little or no social or other impact , however this is something that you get over quickly.
William Zabka and Ralph Machio have done an amazing work on character development.
While i would love the show to be indefinite the creators need to decide when to pull the plug. Leave the legacy on a good level and maybe after 30 years we get to see Miguel and an 80 year old Johnny and explore their story.
I would put 11 stars but please end the show at a right time (maybe season 5 or 6) and don't stretch it . Don't spoil the legacy since we got what most of us wanted which is to see the heroes (and antiheroes) of our youth.
Day of the Dead: Bloodline (2017)
Who ever did this never understood the original
George Romero trilogy masterpiece was not about zombies. Its a clear message to society ,humanity and the human nature. All his films have a common point:human relations. Take this of the equation GR vision had minimum effects compared to the new era flicks. So what was the magic?Good story, photography and of course direction. Todays directors miss the point. I have written it plenty of times before:bigger dont mean better.
Romero spent several minutes of screen time to create iconic characters especially in his second and third films.
New guys get your head straight. Learn photography.Learn to frame.Learn pace and editing. Who cares about splatter. Anyone with aPC and silicone can make gore.
But can you make feeling? Can you produce a single frame where jaws will drop?
I still remember after 30 years the dream sequence of Lori in the room with the calendar. I could have been as well in that room.Lighting guys....Direction....
In any case this one is boring...See it on fast forward(i saw it full time)...
Justice League (2017)
Zack Snyder, rich mans Uwe Boll
Unfortunately Zack Snyder is becoming Uwe Boll of the wealthy.
Unlimited budget and creative power, big names and shallow to to say the least , awful awful movies.
I watched Snyder through Dawn of the Dead remake and 300. I really really liked both of these films and indeed he seemed very promising.I must have seen DoTD his version like 50 times each time discovering some small new detail that he creatively tried to fit being his first time working with a big studio and budget.... He did really good there, but probably he had some people breathing down his neck...
And 300 well what to say about it?He created a movie aesthetically never before seen .....
After that he gave us Suckerpunch !!!!!One of the worst films in the history of...history!!!
But then you say OK maybe it was just an experiment, the guy was just fooling around, he was aiming at a specific generation/culture ,and then you get MoS!!!!!
What the guy was thinking? Superman destroying Metropolis?Acting like a spoiled brat? No brains at all? Millions of dead?
But then you get BvsS and you're like OK he probably will do better and then you get "Martha"!!!!"Martha"!!!!!!He managed to destroy the one most iconic battles with..... "Martha"!?!?!?Ohhh its his mommy...Hey my mom is Martha too.So you have a mom too.I guess i wont kill you weird space alien menace for humanity..Very genius plot indeed and subtexts i would have never thought....
Its like losing control over a plane and every action you make worsens the situation....
JL is a flop. Bad acting(because of bad directing),boring sequences, horrible horrible pace...
In the first ten minutes we see JL formed like children in a playground...seriously?That's the best you could think of? Batman throwing a batarang aimed at a kids head?At that point the ceiling of the movie theater became much more interesting than this....
And then he is like"Hey im like having a team you wanna join?"
Who writes these?Do really people get paid thousands to write corny like this?
Way too much comic relief from Flash, Batfleck although he did his part in BvsS (excoet the Martha thing) became a sidekick and shallower than Superman (whats your superpower-i'm rich) and Alfred...really? Aquaman way too cool (and im being sarcastic here). We all read about Jason Momoa how cool he was while filming but why do i have to see this on film? Although Momoa has the physique and looks i thin he failed miserably ..and WW well...she cant save the film on her own. Cyborg was passable until he became BF with Flash and started throwing punchlines "keep the mermaid away from me" really?
The most interesting characters were the supporting ones. The Amazons ,the Atlanteans ,were acting much better and were much better written than the main heroes...
I will not write about Superman ,as the guy (Snyder)destroyed the most Iconic superhero for ever from MoS so i wont spend another second in this....
Its a horrible horrible mess and obviously they're trying to catch up MCU.
It doesn't get any clearer than this...
MCU took their time.
Building one hero at a time. And even with this many movies they also made mistakes like Civil war , but they did with what they had.(very few heroes compared to the comic books).Still was a very entertaining movie to watch.
Compared with JL, Civil War is a MASTERPIECE!!!!
You cannot compensate millions of dead story line(MoS) with punchlines (JL) . Liking characters on the big screen is not like this.
WB don't take your audiences for stupid.Just because we read comic books and daydream doesn't mean were idiots....
Dear Mr Snyder.
Power is not about doing whatever the heck you can think of.
That's why the real world is plummeting.
Power is about restrain and control.
Its obvious you directed with larger than life criteria. But if you go way too far , heroes become distant and lifeless.
We want heroes to like and be role models , heroes who are better and smarter than us.
If i have to see a rich idiot in Batman attire i read the tabloids.
If i have to see an evil deity i just watch the news.
You can do better than this.....maybe
The net is full with videos of idiots doing stupid things....
See JL on DVD sales 0.99 if you don't have something better to do like shoveling snow or something...
Don't spend your hard earned money for this....NOT WORTH IT!!!!
Pacific Rim (2013)
Praise to Del Toro
Wow!!!!!What a movie. First of all lets get this straight. You will love this movie. It doesn't matter if you've never seen anime or manga or Gundam or Robotech. This movie is on itself.Blend practical effects with cgi toss del toro and next gen cast and you have got it all.I was a bit skeptical in the beginning.I thought to myself"OK i think i know this movie.i saw all the trailers and all".BUT to my surprise the actions sequences left me with my mouth open. The story is pretty much typical hero saves the day BUT with 2340 tons of steel. And you get to actually see and understand the action. With transformers everything was so fast i didn't know what i was seeing.I mean most of the time i didn't know who was fighting who.Even bumblebee's distinct yellow or Oprimus's red blues couldn't help it.It was a salad of metal/chrome thingies with your occasional bullet time effects. Not in this one.Punches travel hundred of meters and when they strike BOOOM,your ears bleed. This movie is huge. Charlie Hunnams performance was solid although i am a bit tired of his SAMCRO style. There are others ways to perform but who am i to argue? As for the other supporting roles make the story believable. Of course the movie has some flaws.Too much macho stuff.Could work with out them.A few clichés and cheesy stuff. But in a movie were 300 storie robots are the protagonist, unfortunately there is little room for actors performances. But they do a good job.In the end its a movie thats a classic. And perhaps Michael Bay can learn a thing or two on how you make a robot movie.Go see it.You wont regret it.
World War Z (2013)
Romero fan
So world war z?Catchy title.Brad Pitt?200 million budget? This should be interesting. World War Z is a good movie.Almost.You see there is a problem.Take away the stunning visuals. The locations. The star. You get a classic hero saves all movie.I like hero movies. Its just that this movie should be about a global pandemic. With a side dish of hero stuff. Not the opposite. It kinda reminded me of War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise.Great movie.Lots of effects. But when you get more than twice the hero escape from impossible situations then you lose realism. And on the acting stuff.Too much situations on a few hrs.I mean the point of the protagonist is for audiences to connect with him.Brad Pitts character was flat.Totally.Maybe it was the acting.Or maybe it was the script.Or even directing(although i don't think that anyone could challenge an actor on a movie that he produces). So you get a flat protagonist. That is doing impossible things.I enjoyed Mr Pitt on Fight Club.He was perfect for the role of Tyler Dirden.Meet Joe Black.Oceans 11+1+1.Hell he even was almost very good on Burn after Reding.Problem is he isn't evolving. It seemed to me that Mr Pitt played a guy that looks and plays exactly like Brad Pitt. And overwritten.Oh and why not more David Morse?Maybe because he would steal the scenes?Because he is way cooler in roles like these? You should have made him the protagonist. He would most certainly pass a more realistic retired special agent whatever. He would go like "honey i have to go save the world.chill out.I've done this before.See you at dinner." No sobs and personal remorse or feelings.THE WORLD IS ENDING DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!! Now for the movie.Excellent visuals.I liked the anthill. The plane crash. The swarm of people capsizing the truck etc.It gives another perspective on Z movies.Less gore. This isn't a Fulci movie. Its something else. Its not pure zombie either. To be honest i enjoyed the first half hour. And the scene in Israel. And the last 3 minutes.Where masses of people prepare an attack on Z's.That would make a good movie.A scene where 1000 M1 Abrams would march against Z's .Millions of Z's.And eventually get owned by the sheer numbers.Where 200 attack helicopters shoot every single ammo they have and run empty.Of everything. And kamikaze themselves for the sake of their families.Where thousands of troops defend a city. And get eaten. Now that would be WWZ.Not this one.It still is a good movie though. But in my humble opinion it lacks grandeur...Producing and acting don't mix...
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
As good as the 1st movie
OK lets get this straight. This is a good movie.I found a few flaws but aside those its a damn good movie. The story is good. Its J.J. Abrams's version of wrath of Khan.Yup boys and girls. But its a good one.The same good solid performances from the cast from the previous installment are here.Of course we see more of Kirk and Spock, maybe a tad more but thats my view.Good effects good directing. Its a classic. But i don't give this a 10 because 1.Too many damn coincidences for the plot to roll.I mean Scotty just happens to have a shuttle available and goes to find the secret starship and nobody notices????Khans blood revives Kirk. What if Bones didn't notice the fungus. And they buried Kirk.Or what if Scotty was late by a second during the jump ship sequence.Tchekhov holds Kirk which in turn holds Scotty in a cliffhanger(literally) and his arm doesn't come of???A 80 kgr guy holds 200 kgr with one hand?If it was Arnold on that scaffold i would buy it but Tchekhov????Spock jumps of a moving carthing and lands easily with no scratch on another one in a scene reminiscent of SW episode 2 and continues to fight Khaan?Khaan who single handedly wiped out a company of Klingons????!!!!And so on.Come ON guys!!!I mean i know this is a movie and in movies impossible things happen but, dude this is a J.J. Abrams movie not a Uwe Boll one(shivers up and down my spine). The script should have been dusted a little more carefully in my opinion. 2.I didn't enjoy Klingons a lot.Maybe because it was for a few minutes. But i remember each time a bird of prey appeared out of nowhere. You knew things were about to get nasty..Perhaps in this one it was due to a lack of a good music score to enhance the tension of the moment.Or that we get a glimpse of Klingons and not a very good one i might add. But all these are chips in the armor.I enjoyed the movie and i'm waiting for more installments. And maybe just maybe all these small flaws were enforced by someone else than Abrams?Studio execs maybe?Any way.Go see it.Its a good sci fi movie.
Dark Skies (2013)
This movie is all that signs could have been and didn't
Wow!!!!What a trip that was.Nowdays its getting more and more difficult to get scared.I mean we have seen it all.Yet this precious little thing made the hair on my back rise!!Good solid performances. It also gives you an insight into the alien agenda via J.K. Simmons short but excellent performance. At around 35-40 mins into the movie i was already immersed into the plot.No hassling around with unnecessary scenes. Its just that simple.Up until the climax you get what you paid for. A few yrs back when i saw Signs i had high hopes.Yet i was once more disappointed by the lame ending and even more the plot holes and factual mistakes. This one doesn't have any.Without the mockumentary style this one scares you at key points.Good photograprhy, directing,SFX,music. This one has it all.Proof that with a minimal budget you can still make a very good movie. Maybe i get a bit overzealous with 10 stars but heck i certainly enjoyed this movie and i got my bucks worth of.Without overpaid "stars" and "directors" this one is by far one of the best horror movies i have seen in the last 5 yrs(at least).Don't you dare miss it!!!!
Dredd (2012)
Finally.Dredd comes to life!!!!!!
I cant help but begin the review with a comparison. This film sets right the crime that was committed 16 yrs ago by the movie with the same name.No punchlines no comic reliefs no idiotic plot twists to keep everyone happy. And this is not about a movie star at his prime making one movie after another. This is a true portrayal of a comic book hero. This is what a comic book should look like on the big screen. This is a film for dredd fans as well as anybody who likes action movies. You wont regret seeing this one. Mr Karl Urban makes an excellent portrayal of dredd. He doesn't try to play tough like his predecessor with unnecessary tag lines and growls and winks.No.Remember that idiotic line "i knew you'd say that" every five minutes on the previous movie?NOT IN THIS ONE!!!! This Dredd is smart. He plays the part.No crappy heroics. Ms Olivia Thirby is excellent at the part of the empathic Anderson. While her comic character is a little less serious(at least on the first editions),yet her performance is that of a true rookie. Praise on Mrs Headey. She truly is Ma-Ma.Drug addict, killer, prostitute, gang leader. In all a complete movie with a simple yet effective scenario. No plot holes. No mistakes(at least no major ones).Die hard fans will certainly find minor comic differences but they are trivial.Unlike the massacre that was done with the 1996 film. With probably 1/10 of the budget of the first movie this one gives you the gloomy Mega city 1 and you buy it.Simple but clever sfx make worth while every second. I just hope they continue this franchise and see a couple more films like this one.I cant wait to see Judge Death,Hershey and why not Brit-Cit,Hondo City,East Mega city etc. But i'm getting ahead. See this film! Its worth your buck!
Evidence (2012)
Beats many documentary horror films
Every once in a while you come across a jewel.Evidence is one of them. Now don't get me wrong. Its not like your big budget film or your never before filmed idea. The story is pretty simple. We have seen it a thousand times.Yet this one goes a little further.Acting is pretty decent. The sfx are very nice and the pace although a bit slow in the beginning gets frantic after the first 35 mins.It has plenty of scary moments. You will be on edge after the first half. You will be expecting the sudden monster close up ,yet you will bounce of your seat every time !It is not a movie that you'll probably see a second time, but there is a lot of effort and enthusiasm behind it and its worth watching it.I can only imagine what they could do with a bigger budget.I don't rate it any higher not because its bad,but because we have to expect from these people a lot of things in the future.Good job!
Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)
What a waste of actors-money
I think the Resident Evil series should come to an end at no 3.It would make a good trilogy.Unfortunately for some unexplained reason Alice keeps coming back. With superpowers, without superpowers, with superpowers etc. etc.ENOUGH.I'd much better like to see a reboot of the series than keep seeing Mrs Jovovich on a once again "zombiekillerjumponthewalldoubleflipsomersaultguntottingsexyslender whatever....". There is a time for everything and a time to know when to stop.Thats the issue here.Even Michelle Rodriguez's and Oded Fehr's resurrection cant save this one from repetitive action scenes, shallow dialog, complete lack of scenario and many many plot holes. In my humble opinion the producers would be better off with a reboot and a new cast.I mean how much can you stretch an apocalypse scenario when all is lost?99% of the world perished and we are still being fed a mega corporation scenario? The greedy UC that wants to do what?Become the no1 stock market company?Resurface as the no1 weapons seller to the world? Dear writers and those behind you i have a shocking revelation for you:THERE IS NO STOCKMARKET,THERE ARE NO CONSUMERS AND NO NATIONS.ITS AN APOCALYPSE GUYS.FIND ANOTHER STORY. I'm not one for writing a negative review because i don't like to undermine the work of actors+crew, but i have a feeling that writers are de-evolving as far as good fantasy stories are emerging.Guys trust me.Give this one a reboot. In a nutshell see this if you are a die hard fan of RE series. All others will be gravelly disappointed.
Total Recall (2012)
Why film it in the first place?
I read a lot of interviews on the internet and magazine articles. I only have one question:why film it? Good actors and a lot of SFX don't necessarily mean success. There was this one time when after the first fistfight i was looking at the ceiling waiting for it to end(both the fight and the film). Why do it?I mean sure SFX and the movie industry has advanced from the 90s but why do it?Why put a 2 minute of excellent choreographed fight?OK i know you can do it now days better than in the 90's.So make another film and call it "total fight" or whatever. You got your class A actors and make them struggle to give another impression of Doug Quaid and Melina.Again:why do it?Its like remaking The Thing or Star Wars.It don't make a damn sense. And then you got Cohagen. He is the big honcho ,the main man and you put him in the first line of fight to be killed like a simple lackey? Its like sending Barrack Obama to fight in Afghanistan.Come on people. You do this so the script is different from the Verhoffen one?Where's Mars?Whats with the "colonies" stuff? And the androids?Wow.Every time Quaid was captured the droids became awfully slow and weak.I mean try escaping the grip of a wrench-hand droid or whatever you call it.You put these super vfx and then you get lame excuses for suspense and action.I could write endless "i didn't like this or that",but that is not the point. Don't get me wrong.I don't diminish the efforts of all the people behind this film.Visually the film is flawless. You got your class A actors and big budget effects. Its impressive for about the first 10 minutes. Then its boring. It has no soul.I am just angry at the studios and producers that Okayed this project. In the end there are some films that just don't make a good remake...Leave them be !!!!! The 4 i gave is for the effort of the actors and technicians.I'd give this film 1 if it were to affect the producers.....
