Halo (2022– )
8/10
As a non-gamer, I really enjoyed this show.
2 July 2022
I'm not a gamer and have never played Halo, so I don't know if that affected my viewing experience.

Reading the reviews, a lot of the bad ones are from gamers who didn't think this followed source material, etc - which is understandable. However, based on their comments, it's very obvious that lots of people who gave this bad ratings didn't actually watch more than 2-3 episodes, which I find very unfair.

I like sci-fi and the cast, and I really enjoyed the show. The story was ok, action was great, and I have no complains about the CGI. I also really liked how, at times, the show gave us the perspective as if we were playing the game.

John, Kai and Soren were my favorite characters. I was already a big fan of Pablo Schreiber and Bokeem Woodbine, but I'd never seen Kate Kennedy in anything else before. She's definitely going to be on my radar now.

This left an opening for season 2, which I would love to see.

If you like sci-fi and/or the cast, I say give this a chance - especially if you've never played the game.

Surprisingly great!
27 November 2021
Based on the mixed reviews and current rating of 5.9, I wasn't expecting much when I saw this pop up on Hulu. But, I'm a sucker for B movies in the 5-6 range, where people either love or hate them. Most of the time they're mostly bad, but every once in a while there's one that's original, weird, something's special about it, etc. This one was intriguing, especially due to it being an anthology movie, and it definitely delivered.

(To reiterate - this is a B movie, so adjust your expectations accordingly.)

There was some parts that were meh, corny, or just a bit too out there. Not every single detail is blatantly presented to us, so there is a bit of room for your own interpretation - which I like. The anthology aspect, however, was just fantastic. I really, really liked the overall movie/story/stories, and the ending was perfect.

Great movie!

What a ride!
21 December 2020
Obviously, this isn't a typical Scott Adkins movie (and could never be on the same level as one of his martial arts movies), but it was a fun ride, nonetheless. It had a very 90's feel, a fun soundtrack to match it, purposely (I hope, anyway) cheap visuals, and the whole thing was just corny and silly and fun. I loved Max's personality (as a joke and in a movie, obviously) and I would have loved to see more of it, or even more extreme. There was a little bit of fighting with some of his signature moves, but not too much.

They did kind of steal a line from Predator, and I'm still not sure if I love or hate that, but it was so unexpected and made me laugh out loud for a couple of minutes.

If you go into this expecting a low budget, corny movie with Scott Adkins trying something different, I think you'll enjoy it. (As someone else mentioned, if this wasn't a Scott Adkins movie, this probably would have been a 5/10.)

Safe (2018)

Pretty good Broadchurch-type show with one major distraction.
9 November 2020
One of the reviewers said that Safe reminded him/her of Broadchurch, which is one of my favorite shows (the first season, anyway), so I made a snap decision to watch it this past Sunday afternoon. Although Safe wasn't as good as Broadchurch, the style definitely did remind me of it and I'm glad to have finally watched it. I watched 7 episodes the first day with no need for a pause (I started in the evening), and the last episode the next day.

The story (or, really, stories) was pretty good and 8 episodes were the perfect length to tell it. Some parts took a bit too long or had some unnecessary details, while others felt rushed, but the overall pacing was pretty good. There were several twists, along with plenty of misleading shots and characters which made me think there was more to them than there actually was. Most of the actors played their parts very well, and Sophie was really the only one who I found slightly annoying from time to time.

I'm a big Michael C. Hall fan, from the many seasons of our beloved Dexter, to movies he's starred in. He did a great job in this show as well (not that I doubted he would). I do have to say that, although his British accent sounded British, I found it extremely distracting. As much as I enjoyed his presence and acting in every scene he was in, the accent kept throwing me off and it was a constant reminder that this was a show/acting, and it kept me from getting really immersed into the story. There are so many different ways they could have explained why an American was living in England, and they should have done that, rather than giving him an accent. This was my biggest issue with the show.

All in all, if you like shows like Broadchurch, this is a good one to watch. Just try your hardest not to let the accent keep you distracted.

Fantastic episode!

What a great episode! Too bad it was shorter than most, I could have easily watched an hour and a half of it.

This one and Nightmare at 30,000 Feet were my favorite episodes. Great job!

Worse than the original.
2 August 2020
I really like Stu Bennett, he's very likeable and a great badass. This movie, however, is a major step down from the first one.

Instead of continuing on with John as a lone wolf, very particular and focused (which fit him very well), this movie gave us a bunch of mediocre, cliche characters who took up a lot of screen time that should have gone to John.

The two girls had some surprisingly good fight moves, but I still would have preferred the movie without so many side characters.

I watch a lot of B movies, so I wasn't expecting a great movie here, but this was definitely a letdown. This one is for completionists, or people who like and/or want to support B movies. Just go in with super low expectations.

Completely unexpected!
19 April 2020
I really like Hayden Christensen and I'm a big fan of apocalypse-type movies, so despite the terrible reviews, I couldn't pass on this.

This movie was kind of a mind@#$&, but not in a bad way as if it didn't know what it is or what it wants to accomplish. Hayden's character was a complicated one and it was really painful to watch him at times. The filmmakers did a great job making me feel the anxiety, fear, discomfort, hopelessness, etc.

Hayden Christensen did an amazing job, his friend and Noe were ok, and the rest of the cast was meh (some maybe even annoying). But, it's a low budget movie and really, those other people didn't make much difference anyway.

There's really no easy way to describe this movie, to me it had the elements of:
  • Shelter (Michael Shannon)
  • Man Down (Shia Labeouf)
  • Joker (Joaquin Phoenix)
  • Mad Max (Mel Gibson)
  • Clockwork Orange
  • and something else that I can't really pinpoint.

If you're a fan of Hayden, apocalyptic type of movies, odd low budget movies, or any of the movies I mentioned below, give this one a shot.

Fantastic!
8 March 2020
This has become one of my favorite movies, I rewatch it every few months (along with Dredd, Mad Max: Fury Road, Thor: Ragnarok, The Guest..).

The movie is full of violent, graphic, great gunfights, hand to hand combat, and it has one of the best and most unique kills I've ever seen (you'll know it when you see it). I really liked the way it was filmed, with lots quick cuts. You do have to really pay attention or you'll miss stuff, since there are multiple moving parts going on, Marky Mark's character talks very fast, and it all moves very quickly.

Like most, I first noticed Iko Uwais in The Raid, and he's become one of my favorite actors. Simply put, the guy is amazing, seriously. I'm so glad he's finally getting noticed, so he can become as huge of a star as he deserves to be.

Marky Mark's character was just perfect for him. I would say, you'll either love him or hate him - I loved him. He's quick, dry, funny, super smart, mentally unstable, and a badass.

Sam Medina's character was so likeable and charismatic, he definitely stood out.

The reason this movie doesn't get a 10 is, despite all these great things about it, it's missing that *something*. I've seen it 5-6 times now and I still can't put my finger on it. Maybe because it moves so quickly and is only about 1.5 hours long, we don't really get a chance to connect with the characters. I don't know.

If you're a fan of action, Iko Uwais, Marky Mark, Sam Medina, or any of the other characters, definitely watch this.

Scott Adkins fans prepare to be (mostly) disappointed.
1 March 2020
Are you here for Scott Adkins? Prepare to be disappointed. This isn't his usual bad, B movie with a payoff in the shape of some glorious ass whupping. There are zero kicks or punches thrown by Scott in this movie - those with a keen eye for detail should know something is off as soon as he shows up wearing well-fitted jeans (which do, ahem, fit him very well). Also, Scott is not the main character, so don't expect too much screen time with him.

The obnoxious, pretentious, cliche, 18 year old douchebag dialogue is terrible. The Reese Witherspoon lookalike with a hairdo that seems to be held together by an entire can of hairspray is annoying and just plain awful. (Her IMDB bio boasts of the famous acting coaches she's worked with ((I stopped reading after the first few rows)) - I hope she kept the receipts cause she should go get her money back.) And the camcorder guy? Don't even get me started on him.

As for all the firefights.. Pretty unrealistic scenarios made worse by details like the sound of shooting still going even after the person visibly stopped shooting.

Other than a few minutes of SA in tight jeans and the soothing voice of the AllState guy (also a side character), this movie is pretty awful. (It's really a 2/10, I gave an extra star for the former.) If you're a completionist, give it a watch. If you're looking for a good B movie, this isn't it - go watch something like Avengement instead. <3

Here for Luke Evans? Adjust your expectations and stay for a great movie!
16 February 2020
First things first: Although I'm a big fan of Noomi Rapache, I have to admit my main attraction to this movie was the face of the gorgeous Luke Evans on the poster. With that said, anyone going into this movie for him, it's worth noting that he has a total screen time of about 15 minutes. I felt mislead, and I believe adding him for such a small role was to attract more viewers. Still, he did a great job, as always.

A few things worth mentioning:
  • I felt soooo uncomfortable the entire movie. I paused it a few times to try and kind of reset the amount of anxiety I was feeling, but it didn't help. I believe I was supposed to feel extremely uncomfortable, so even though I don't like the feeling, job well done.
  • Noomi Rapache was amazing as a broken woman. I believed everything that was happening was actually happening to her.
  • One particular scene made me unconsciously sit up in my recliner and my jaw dropped.

This movie deserves a higher rating than 8, and the current 6.5 is way off. The only reason I didn't rate it higher is because I generally try to avoid movies like this because, as great as they may be, I really don't like being so uncomfortable for 1.5-2 hours.

Scott Adkins doing scientist-y stuff and making cheesy jokes.
26 November 2019
With its current rating of 3.7, I think it's pretty safe to say that anyone going into this movie willingly is either a Adkins or Lundgren fanboy/fangirl. And, with the listed adventure/sci-fi premise, we should know to set our expectations accordingly.

This is a cheesy B adventure with hints of comedy. There are no fights here (other than a handful of punches), there's no fancy CGI, what the characters do doesn't always make sense, and the cast is made up of mostly people we've never heard of. Still, I don't think it deserves a 3.7 and I definitely wouldn't say it's the worst movie I've seen this year. (Seriously, if you think the acting here is bad, you should watch Wild Horses. I've never seen anything like it - with the exception of Hartnett and Franco.)

The best thing about this movie was Scott Adkins. Although he was believable as a scientist, the best parts were when he cracked little cheesy jokes and laughed at them. It was adorable! He probably smiled and laughed in this one movie more than in all of his other movies put together. Obviously, I prefer him as an angry badass, but I accept that he also needs to do other types of characters to show his range.

And those who enjoy Lundgren, although he's not the main character here and we see less of him, they will probably like his typical bad guy persona with really nice hair.

Wild Horses (2015)

It's like The Room, but without the charm.
24 November 2019
So.. this movie is pretty terrible. I mean, bad. If you've seen The Room, you know all about terrible sets, acting, dialogue, etc. But, The Room has heart, it's lovable, it's hilarious - we love it! Wild Horses, on the other hand, is none of those things, it's just plan terrible.

With the exception of Hartnett, Franco, and the gorgeous horses, every part of this film is just awful - plot, dialogue, directing, acting.. everything. The whole movie feels unnatural and stiff. People sound like they're reading their lines, and I swear at times some actors actually look at the camera (either instinctively or as if they're looking for cues or a thumbs up/down).

Duvall's real world wife, who plays the lady Ranger, is the worst. Right behind her is her boss, who reminded me of Peter from The Room (the way he spoke and the things he said). Right behind them is everyone else. Duvall even does the thing Lisa (from The Room) does, he keeps starting conversations and then doesn't want to talk about it anymore.

Josh Hartnett seemed very comfortable, he did great for what he had to work with. The only way I can make sense of him in this trainwreck is that someone asked him to do it as a favor to them, he agreed, he knew it was terrible as he was filming it, but he's such a nice and easy going guy that he did it anyway and made a genuine effort. And James Franco, from him I got the "Whatever, I've been in and have made a bajillion movies, let's do this" vibe. I'm still not sure if he's really talented or really awful.

I watch a lot of B movies (and movies in general), so I know to keep my expectations pretty low. This one, however, caught me off guard. I'm giving it very generous 4/10 stars - one for Hartnett, one for Franco, and two for making me squirm and (at times) laugh from how uncomfortable and embarrassed I was for everyone involved in this production.

I wanted to love it.
24 November 2019
As a big fan of Sharlto Copley, action, violence, gore, etc, I tried so hard to like this movie, but I just didn't enjoy it. I'm ok with first person POV movies (I really liked Kill Switch) and I don't get motion sickness, so neither of those contributed to my dislike.

If I dissect Hardcore Henry, it has many ingredients that I love. But, it's like they added as much cool stuff as they could think of, whether it makes sense or not, even if it creates plot holes. One of my movie pet peeves is when characters start explaining to the viewers what's going on or what's happened in the movie (like the ending of Hereditary). When that happens, it means that either the filmmakers know they didn't get their point across, they've run out of time, they're lazy, unimaginitive, etc, so instead of showing us what we need to know, they have a character "fill us in". In this movie, that happens at least twice.

I also didn't connect with any of the characters, so I didn't really care what happens to them, and a lot of them I found to be annoying.

There were a couple of scenes that perked me up. The first one was towards the beginning, we see Henry doing some pretty cool maneuvers as he's trying to get from point A to point B, and the other one was towards the end and mostly attributed to the background music.

I can't recommend this one. I was bored even during the "good" parts I should have enjoyed, and the movie felt 2.5 hours long.

A wonder-ful(l) movie!
23 November 2019
I am absolutely baffled by the low score for this film. I hate how long it took me to watch it, and even more to think how many people are missing out just because of the low rating. :(

This movie is so much more than I expected. I completely connected with the characters and their experiences, I could feel everything they were feeling - I was mad, sad, happy.. I teared up more than once. The sense of wonder throughout was overwhelming. I think the best way I can describe it is: Watching children experience things for the first time, seeing the amazement on their faces, and you feel it as well. There were also some sad parts, but they were necessary to get the point of the movie across.

Hong Chau absolutely stole the show! She was the kind of person you could spend a day with and it completely change your perspective on life. The world needs more people like her character. Matt Damon was so effortlessly great, such a genuine character. And Christoph Waltz was hilarious! There were times when he didn't say a word, but I was cracking up because his face told us exactly what he was thinking.

Please give this wonderful movie a chance.

Great movie, even with limited Scott Adkins action.
22 November 2019
I don't get the hate for this movie. Ridiculous people saying this is just "Chinese propaganda", etc - who cares?? Every year movies are made about the American military, patriotism, etc. Why can't the Chinese do the same?

I went into this for Scott Adkins, and even though he's an unlikeable (although not nearly as unlikeable as in Triple Threat) side character and there were only two hand to hand combat scenes with him, I was not disappointed. There was pretty much non stop action, it was exciting, and even funny at times.

The movie is not without its issues. There were some very obviously unrealistic things that I was baffled by. The way some characters of different ranks spoke to or interacted with each other was very far-fetched. There were times when I didn't really know what was going on or how we got to where we were. I was paying attention, so I don't think I missed it, I think there were just some holes in the script.

I watch all of my movies and TV shows with subtitles, regardless of the language. This is the first time that I can remember where I struggled to follow the dialogue (I've seen a good bit of foreign films). I don't know if the issue was with Vudu or it's like that on blu-ray/DVD as well, but the subtitles were moving too fast and I kept having to rewind and re-read many parts, even multiple times. It was very frustrating.

All in all, it's a very entertaining action movie, as long as you can not focus too much on the flaws and you keep your remote handy.

Worth watching for the cast, if nothing else.
18 November 2019
The Good: If you're a fan of Iko Uwais and will watch anything he's in, he alone was worth watching this one. Yayan Ruhian has an even smaller role but, as always, he is a treat to watch. Also worth mentioning is Callan Mulvey's small role (someone give this guy a chance!). And, if you're like me and can't help but like the unlikeable Frank Grillo, it's worth a watch. Bonus: I always like seeing the chemistry between actors who have worked together on other projects - Uwais and Ruhian in The Raid movies, and Grillo and Mulvey in The Winter Soldier.

The Bad: Well, there's a lot of it. I'm not sure this movie knows exactly what it wants to be. It's definitely not a sequel to the original Skyline, so I guess it's happening at the same time-ish as it? Somewhere along the line I stopped trying to figure it out. There were too many nonsensical things happening, and the overall movie was really sloppy. It's as if the filmmakers had the "Eh, maybe no one will notice" attitude in regards to sooo many goofs. For a serious movie, this is unacceptable.

All in all, I didn't hate it. The actual story is about as good or bad as the original Skyline, but the cast definitely made it more enjoyable.

Give this movie a fair chance.
17 November 2019
It's seems that a lot of the negative reviews are from people who didn't like 1st person point of view (used here about 80-90% of the movie) and then just didn't really give the movie a fair chance. The complaints about how they couldn't afford to pay Dan Stevens more and that's why we don't see much of his face are ridiculous and those people are missing what this movie is supposed to be.

I'm not a gamer and I still enjoyed the way this was filmed. It was clever how not everything was vocalized, but we're expected to pay attention to different messages popping up on the screen (as Dan Stevens was seeing them). This made me feel more connected to the main character, I was able to feel different emotions he was going through. This also really added to anticipation, as I only knew what the main character knew, and at times we were both lost.

I watched the movie primarily because of Dan Stevens (who was fantastic in The Guest), and even though we don't see his face for most of the movie, we still hear his voice and "know" that it's him the entire time. I was not disappointed by this.

The idea behind this movie is pretty unique, the execution was great, and there was never a dull moment for me. I do feel like we didn't get all of the story behind what was happening and why, but it makes sense because the main character couldn't be everywhere at all times.

Know what you're getting yourself into.
16 November 2019
If you're here because you loved the original Universal Soldier and want to see more of JCVD or D. Lundgren, you will probably be disappointed. I estimate about 15 minutes total of screen time for these two guys. Think of it as the old-timers passing the torch to the new generation.

If you're here because you were in awe of Andrei Arlovski as he dominated Regeneration, you will probably like this movie. But, although he does a great job in this one, he isn't quite the bada*s we saw last time, because..

This is a Scott Adkins movie where he does Scott Adkins things and no one does those things like Scott Adkins does them. (Although, really, if you haven't seen Regeneration, you should watch it before seeing this one. Andrei Arlovski blew me away.) Unlike his typical roles, this one starts off kind of slow, taking some time to develop Scott's character, but hang in there and you will be rewarded.

I watched the unrated version from the Canadian blu-ray (it's Region 1 and it works in the US), which I read is far superior to the theatrical version available in the US. It's very graphic, bloody, and there is plenty of violence. If you love Scott Adkins movies, show your support and spend the $12 on this blu-ray - you will not regret it.

Looking for Scott Adkins as a Greek king? You've found him.
30 October 2019
I really only got this movie and watched it for Scott Adkins. As his fan, let's face it, I'm used to pretty bad movies with amazing fight scenes that make it totally worth it. I wasn't sure what to expect here, but I knew it wasn't gonna be his typical film.

This movie is corny and not very good, but it's not terrible. For what my expectations were, I was entertained and didn't feel like I wasted my time.

The first scene was the best for me. It felt like, even though we're so far back in time and he's playing this Greek king, we got a little taste of the Scott Adkins we all know and love. I actually chuckled out loud, appreciating how cleverly they incorporated his moves into this old timey fight and made it seem natural.

I think Scott did a great job playing his character, it didn't feel weird or forced at all. I wish he would have gotten more screen time, but the movie wasn't about him, so I understand.

I was very surprised at a couple of other very good looking fight scenes (without Scott) in the movie as well.

All in all, if you're here for Scott Adkins, any of the other actors, or a mildly entertaining 5/10 movie, give this one a try.

Least favorite Scott Adkins movie
30 October 2019
I'm a huge Scott Adkins fan and will watch him in pretty much anything. I always know going in that I may get a 5-6/10 movie, but the fighting scenes will be amazing. I've yet to be disappointed, until today. I've seen the original Green Street Hooligans and loved it, but knew this wasn't really related, so I went into it for Scott Adkins. Oh, boy.

Another reviewer said this was a typical martial arts movie - this is definitely NOT a martial arts movie! This movie has some training (more like boxing) and some street type fighting, but not very much at all. And don't expect to see the typical Scott Adkins moves we've grown to love. To be believable in this particular role, and I understand why, he's maybe 1/3 of the fighter he normally really is.

If you're going into this movie for the fighting or expecting typical Scott Adkins action, you will be disappointed.

This is not my Scott Adkins or why I watch his movies. :(

Amazing performances, great movie!
21 September 2019
The current 5.5/10 score for this movie is absurd. Just the amazing performances by Sophie and Dylan deserve a much higher score, but the overall movie was fantastic.

With no bells and whistles, this movie accomplished more than many big budget ones do these days. I felt many things, but I mostly felt super uncomfortable for probably 80 minutes out of the 87 minute runtime, which I was supposed to.

I learned long time ago not to go by IMDB's scores and instead read the reviews. There are so many gems like this one hiding behind those low 5's.

I'll keep it short.
14 August 2019
Today is 8/13 and this was movie #195 that I've seen this year. (Some - probably less than 10% of those - I've seen more than once.)

This is the best movie I've seen this year. I'm not kidding, it's amazing.

Don't worry, it's not one of those sappy, emotionally draining movies, nor is it a corny comedy. It's an adventure that feels very real and genuine, and it can't help but make you fall in love with the characters and belly laugh throughout.

Go see it! :)

Iko Uwais delivers again, but that's no surprise.
8 July 2019
Iko Uwais is amazing. If you've seen him in other movies, you already know this and don't need me to try to sell you on this one.

This movie is pretty much non stop action, with some scenes being very brutal and even a little difficult to watch. (I'm generally not the one to look away, unless it's something like *that* scene from "American History X".) The choreography is beautiful to watch and I found myself rewinding and rewatching multiple scenes several times. I really, really liked the way the movie was shot as well, from fast to slow motion, to many different angles used.

The rest of the major characters were also great, with Very Tri Yulisman really blowing me away.

Sure, the movie is maybe a little predictable, but there's still a good story there - much better than I expected for this type of movie. There's also just enough of drama and romance to add substance, without being cheesy or annoying. (We're here for the action, after all. If we want romance, we'll go watch "The Notebook" or "La La Land" - both of which are great movies, BTW.)

Some of my favorite scenes are around the 29m, 1h11m, and 1h42m marks.

Just do yourself a favor and watch this movie. :)

Give your dog some extra love today.
4 May 2019
I have to be honest, if I knew what this movie was *really* about, I would not have watched it. I can watch blood and gore all day, I love it, but animal related stuff is just unbearable. (Vudu's plot does not mention there's an animal involved and there is nothing pictured on the poster.)

With that said, I was already committed by the time I realized there was an animal involved, but I'm really glad I watched it. No bells and whistles, but it didn't need them. I really liked the way the story was told, I was surprised how much it made me feel for and connect with the characters.

I watched the entire movie (and am writing this review) squeezed to the side of my recliner, while my dog (as usual) is very comfortably stretched out next to me and snoring. I'm gonna give her some extra love tonight. <3

What was I thinking??

This movie is the perfect example of how actors influence our movie experience.

I saw this movie years ago (probably around the time it came out) and I didn't remember much about it, other than it was "old timey" and I did not like it at all. Back then I didn't rate many movies on IMDB, but for some reason I actually rated this one and gave it a 5. Ha!

In the last few years, movies have become my favorite hobby, and I know my tastes have changed some. I've also gone from not really knowing who Taylor Kitsch is, to him becoming one of my favorite actors. His character in season 2 of True Detective really caught me by surprise and I've been hooked ever since.

I've been kind of scared to rewatch this, I was afraid I'd still hate it. But, I made an impulse decision tonight and watched it after all. Boy, am I glad I did! Sure, it's predictable and maybe a little corny at times, but it's such a fun ride. It has so many great elements - action, humor, chivalry, honor, science fiction, romance - but not too much of any of them.

If you're a fan of Taylor Kitsch, Dominic West, Mark Strong, etc, you should really give this one a chance. (And whether or not you know who Lynn Collins is, it doesn't matter, because she is stunning and you won't be able to keep your eyes off her. I'm a straight female and I was almost as mesmerized by her as I was Taylor Kitsch. Almost. :)) Just don't take it too seriously and you won't be disappointed.
