A Heart in the Mouth in Worth Two Feet in the Grave
11 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
For those who believe that true love is assisting a homicidal maniac while simultaneously trying to commit adultery, all in the name of wistful nostalgia, and in the process wrecking one's perfectly good life that includes professorship at Oxford. Still with me?

The performances are superb, although to be honest I felt the script stilted, as if someone was copying Hitchcock without being Hitchcock, and the presence of Barry Foster, the lead in Hitchcock's FRENZY, adds to this suspicion, as if some further cachet were needed to seal the viewer deal. What's wrong with the script? I know it's made-for-(British)-TV, but the ending is quite rushed after all the red herrings and relationship conversations were set in place. Was it clever anyway? OK, I didn't think Miranda was going to be QUITE so insane, but I knew it wasn't going to end well. How could it?

The plot goes under the heading "watch out for living the past" along with "keep to your own business." OK, OK, so Westgate (Peck) wanted a little excitement in his life? No? Then he should've scrammed when he saw the scissors in Pilkington's neck. No? You say true love conquers all? Westgate isn't even married to her, so he has no vested interest to protect her, other than he wants a few more minutes (or a lifetime) with "Patch". It's very anti-hierarchy also, somewhat subversive in saying that Oxford produces this bunch, with chloroform and attachments.

Hey, I watched the whole thing, and I felt my anger at Peck turning to sadness for him, and then for us all as humans. Does that mean good filmmaking, that I can feel feelings? Eh, I feel awe on the 27th viewing of PREDATOR, and joy on the 100th viewing of THE SANTA CLAUSE. So you make the call.

Good period comedy but not genre
8 November 2021
THE STORY & GENRE -- Aristocratic home holds secret pirate's treasure which brings forth crooks. Not genre.

THE VERDICT -- Brisk and zany comedy, grade bumped up a notch for love of the ward (Mary Brian). Also some pre-code naughtiness. 6.5.

FREE ONLINE -- Yes, foreign websites from a TCM broadcast, 63 minutes.

Genre Serial keeps Interest
7 November 2021
THE FILM & GENRE -- Serial of 290 minutes. Besides the usual futuristic devices, this also has the "flying wing" aeronautical marvel, a hunchback, and a mad doctor. There is also a TV-Movie Feature created from the Serial.

THE VERDICT -- I'm not a big serial lover but this one kept my attention, and the flying wing is impressive.

FREE ONLINE - Yes. The serial for sure. As for the feature, I found one on YT at 102 minutes which matches IMDB DICK TRACY (1990) at 101 minutes. Wiki has a different duration of 72 minutes but I've never seen that.

Very Good Charlie Chan Pseudo-Genre
7 November 2021
THE STORY & (Pseudo)GENRE -- Most of the Charlie Chan films are pseudo-genre. This one involves a murder mystery with brief phony mysticism. Warner Oland's second movie as Charlie, also starring Bela Lugosi, and Robert Young's film debut.

THE VERDICT -- Of the 12 Chans I'll be covering, this one ranks about #7. That doesn't mean it's mediocre. No no, this is a very good entry. The cast is actually superlative but the script, except for Chan-isms, is a bit lackluster.

FREE ONLINE -- Yes, the full 71 minutes.

THE VERDICT -- It has guts, but no brains. Calling the Wizard of Oz! You should watch this only for curiosity interest.

FREE ONLINE -- Yes, commonly at 51 minutes, but sometimes 53 minutes, although IMDB says 55 minutes, and Wiki 58 minutes.

Lighthearted Rene Clair Non-Genre Social Commentary
7 November 2021
THE STORY & GENRE -- This is a comedy with social commentary on the Industrial Age and on happiness. Louis (Raymond Cordy) is an escaped prisoner who becomes a huge industrialist success. His accomplice Emile (Henri Marchand) is however caught and serves his time, but then is re-imprisoned for vagrancy. He escapes again after a failed suicide attempt, then by happenstance gets a job at Louis' factory. Much focus is then placed upon the "incarceration" of factory life, executive life, public life, and married life. In the end, there is another escape for Emile and Louis. The point of the film seems to be that personal freedom is more important than money and power. Although there are a few futuristic or fantasy elements, these are not the point of the film, and therefore I would say this is not genre. Rene Clair, who excelled in lighthearted fantasy (THE CRAZY RAY, IT HAPPENED TOMORROW, I MARRIED A WITCH) directs, but this also does not make it genre.

THE VERDICT -- Likable. No surprise with Clair at the helm. It's French (light) in nature, not German (heavy) like METROPOLIS, or American (blase) like MODERN TIMES, which I believe A NOUS LA LIBERTE imitates (but I would not say mocks). There is a buffoonery like Chaplin here but also a camaraderie between the leads like Laurel & Hardy, and it comes across genuine and funny. The visuals have a delightful Art Deco look. If there is any flaw, the movie just seems a bit dragged out. Solid 7.5.

FREE ONLINE -- Yes, the 84-minute USA re-release in the Criterion Collection. I have never seen a 97-minute version.

Stay on Your Own Planet
7 November 2021
THE STORY & GENRE -- Bimbo takes a trip to the red planet and meets a bevy of ridiculous characters. Fleischer Studio cartoon.

THE VERDICT -- This tries too hard to be both weird and musical, and therefore comes off as self-conscious rather than hallucinogenic. Not the best animation either. I'll give it a 3.5.

FREE ONLINE - Yes.

Lon Chaney's Final Film is a Doozy but not Genre
7 November 2021
THE STORY & GENRE -- Crime drama is a sound remake of the 1925 silent film of the same name. A ventriloquist, a strongman, and a "Twenty-Inch Man" give up the sideshow after a raid, and decide instead to rob the wealthy. How they do this is ingenious, amusing, frightening, creepy, and pretty believable. Characters include a gorilla and circus freaks, but I would not categorize this as genre. Starring Lon Chaney Sr in his final role.

THE VERDICT -- Whether you are astounded by Harry Earles, or mesmerized by Chaney, this film never bores. Sometimes it borders on ludicrous but then it tethers back under the strong leadership of the script and direction. Great ending.

FREE ONLINE -- Yes, 72 minutes.

THE STORY & GENRE -- Bimbo tries to rob a hen-house, then gets his comeuppance from ghosts & demons. Fleischer Studios.

THE VERDICT -- Wow, this is weird! I LOVE IT.

FREE ONLINE -- Two versions available. The original Paramount and the UM&M re-release. Online, the UM&M is clearer and there doesn't seem to be any content difference other than the title cards.

Not JAWS, but FINS!
7 November 2021
THE STORY & GENRE -- This is an island drama but it has a giant manta ray (an early "giant monster" film), and therefore qualifies as genre. Boris Karloff has a minor role. Lionel Barrymore co-directed.

THE VERDICT -- Considering Lon Chaney was supposed to take the lead role but could not due to cancer, it's no coincidence this is similar to WEST OF ZANZIBAR or KONGO with its exotic location, salacious acting, and torrid female lead Raquel Torres. This is solid pre-code stuff. That in itself makes it a 7. You'll also be intrigued to know the manta footage is not hokey but satisfying, and therefore bumps it up to 7.5.

FREE ONLINE -- I don't believe I've ever seen it streaming. You can download it from a 68-minute adequate-looking TCM broadcast if you can find it.

Not genre, Not really good
7 November 2021
THE STORY & GENRE -- Fu Manchu wants to take over the world. There is very little or no genre here. Rowland Lee directs, Warner Oland stars.

THE VERDICT -- Similar to MYSTERIOUS DR. FU MANCHU (1929), it's predecessor, but a bit better. This isn't saying much, and you might just end up fast-forwarding though the talkier parts.

FREE ONLINE -- Yes, under the title "Resurrected 1930" if you look.

Not a Bad Comedy Pseudo-Genre
7 November 2021
THE STORY & (Pseudo)GENRE -- Cocky radio wannabe gets his chance as station manager, but ends up hiring a gaggle of crazies, including a phony spiritualist bank-robbery leader.

THE VERDICT -- Unlike some, I thought this was cute and not offensive in the least. Bill's behavior is part of the package, and sure, he's arrogant, but also you can sympathize with his plight, which he did not instigate. In a way, it's kind of an early UHF (1989), although it doesn't have that kind of cult appeal. I give it 6.5.

FREE ONLINE -- Foreign websites sporadically. You might have to download.

Fairbanks Called it a "Prestige Picture" and He Was Right
6 November 2021
THE STORY & GENRE -- Afterlife judgment on ocean liner. Douglas Fairbanks Jr, Leslie Howard star.

THE VERDICT -- Endearing. A great sentimentality here for the dust of an earlier age. Is BETWEEN TWO WORLDS (1944) better? Yes, by a step or so, but I've seen OUTWARD BOUND a couple of times and I'm never disappointed. Solid 7.5.

FREE ONLINE -- Yes, crackly, from a TCM broadcast, the full 83 minutes, is common. The Library of Congress holds a print in preservation, though I'm not sure if it's any better.

Some Heresy from Me
6 November 2021
THE STORY & GENRE -- Carnival barker commits suicide and meets the afterlife in the final 30 minutes of this tragi-romance.

THE VERDICT -- My heresy is that IMO this film version is better than Fritz Lang's 1934 LILIOM, and just as good as CAROUSEL. Maybe it's that the philosophical markers are better lit here, not striving for Lang's hard watch or Carousel's artiness. I don't have a problem with Liliom's abusive nature because it's the antithesis of his carefree public demeanor, and it's a lesson also. If all we focus upon is what a person "ought to be" then we will not address the intricacies of the human relationship. The film does not purport to be Frank Capraesque or Kubrickese, there is no particular direction you're supposed to turn. I think many viewers have a hard time with that, although by no means would I call this an art film.

FREE ONLINE -- There is a 94-minute version with exit music, and a 92-minute version without exit music. Both can be found. The 90-minute with exit music just runs fast.

Affable but Poor
6 November 2021
THE STORY & (Pseudo)GENRE -- Phony haunted house. Amos & Andy star.

THE VERDICT -- There are a LOT of things to get offended about in this world: the attitude of the rich towards the poor, the attitude of the poor towards the rich, women vs. Men and vice versa, and the list goes on about our internecine human race wars. I can be outraged about human rights violations in China, cruelty to animals, child slavery, and every manner of torture on this planet. But I'm not going to get offended, or pretend to be, because Amos and Andy wore blackface. That said, this film is only a little entertaining because the script is lacking, and that's the only reason it gets a low 6.

FREE ONLINE -- Sure enough!

Layered Mystery, Early Noir Feel, Innovative
6 November 2021
THE STORY & GENRE -- An inventive thief enjoys terrorizing his victims. This film would be entirely pseudo-genre, the old dark house, the mysterious serial killer, and so forth, except there is a touch of Ouija here that seems genuine. This movie is said to have inspired Bob Kane's Batman a few years later. Una Merkel stars, Roland West directs.

THE VERDICT -- THE BAT WHISPERS has a very noir feel to it, dream-like more than many early mystery-thrillers, a bit expressionist, some great camera angles and lighting, and the feeling of an illusion. The "bat" is just too good, and indeed the surprise ending lets you know you're viewing within a layer.

FREE ONLINE -- Yes, both the 35mm and 65mm widescreen (early tech advancement) are available.
