Largely unfunny group

This concept is great, but only because I thought I'd be watching a bunch of improv-style comics play off each other in a bizarre battle of wits. What I got instead was comics pretending to poop themselves, screaming for no reason, attempting to make themselves throw up, and throwing food all over a small apartment. The shock-humor angle the competitors took was WEAK SAUCE and as a viewer it was awkward- not funny. The only comedian that seemed to be trying an improv angle did end up winning, which made me really happy, but the rest of them were dead weight. This would be a good show if "Yes, and" was required from the onset and bodily fluids/unnecessary nudity were off limits.

Ask Dr. Ruth (2019)
9/10
Laugh, cry, repeat.
2 February 2019
I grew up watching Dr. Ruth on PBS specials as she was encouraging sex education and self acceptance in young people. When I heard this documentary was premiering at Sundance it was the first ticket I bought, and it did not disappoint. The narrative shifts between Dr Ruth's childhood as an orphan of the holocaust and a playful retelling of her career highlights. Her quick wit keeps you laughing throughout the film, but there are many tender moments to be found as she reflects on the loss and upheaval she endured as a young woman in 1940's Europe. And of course, there's plenty of advice about sex.

This is definitely one of the better biographical documentaries I've seen. Even if you have no previous knowledge of Dr. Ruth and her glory days as a TV and radio personality, I promise this film will delight.

I Am Mother (2019)
8/10
A familiar formula, well executed.
2 February 2019
Fans of Ex Machina and other cerebral sci-fi movies will find another favorite here. The lead actress makes a stunning debut and carries the film, with Hilary Swank in a supporting role. The film constantly has you changing allegiances, unsure of who to trust. The finale is super satisfying.

For the commenter wondering why there are reviews already, I Am Mother premiered at Sundance and has probably been viewed by at least ~1,000 people by this point- myself included.

You're the Worst (2014–2019)
9/10
Possibly the funniest underrated show on TV.
27 August 2018
I look forward to every episode because I know that I will laugh myself sick by the end.

It's thoughtful and funny. There's dysfunction and redemption. You'll be both horrified by and completely in love with every member of this wonderful ensemble.

Love (2016–2018)
1/10
Irredeemable characters with no chemistry.
27 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I hate this show. I kept wanting to like it because the talent lineup is stacked. But the main characters have absolutely no chemistry with each other, they don't seem to actually like each other on even a basic level, and so much of their behavior is so toxic. This show isn't funny, endearing, or clever. I'm not really sure what the appeal is.

Even in shows like Sunny, the genuinely bad people it features are entertaining enough that there's humor in their absurd behaviors. Here, the toxic and narcissistic leads simply depress viewers and demonstrate everything you shouldn't do in a relationship while somehow also trying to glorify the dysfunction. The fact that they end up together is laughable given how poorly they get along all the time. It's not charming. It's not "real". It's just bad.

Bottom line: this show is crap. If you want to watch a show about dysfunctional people falling in love you should watch You're the Worst. It does everything this show was trying to do but actually succeeds. Plus you get to have a actual moments of laughter/emotion/entertainment. Hard pass on Love.
