"Mysterious Device"
29 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
What a nice little short. The main guy Ben Worley ,who must be related to the director in some capacity since they have the same name,at first got on my nerves. he just seemed to rubbed me the wrong way. So I was not at all sympathetic at all at his current situation of being "teleported" because of the device into dangerous and deadly scenarios.

All in all it's like you can't help think this nerd deserves to get what he gets because of being such a goof-ball. But still, the different scenarios are cool ranging from Aliens, terrorists, zombies(my favorite), nightmare zone, and etc.. Nicely done and enough budget to make it look good and believable. So these Worly brothers are a team to watch. i can't wait to see an actual feature film done by these talented guys..

"I Dare You To Make-Out With The Wolf!"
28 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
And I don't think I will ever see a ending like this movie where i believe every imaginable creature and Monsters one can think of appear in one film!! (Ha-ha) Wow. what a climax! Chris 'Thor'Hemsworth did this one back in 2009 but was not released till now. maybe because to now capitalized on his new found popularity. he was cast very nicely as the 'The Hunky Guy'. One of the archtypical representative of all the so-called scary movies requisites.

The lovely Kristen Connolly who here represent 'The Virgin'was more than just nice 'eye-candy' to look at. She did an good job acting this role out for what it was worth.

The other teen actors, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams and Anna Hutchison were OK as the rest of the representatives of the typical teens. Only I had a problem with Jesse as a nerd. He no way looked like your typical nerd.Ha-ha Anna was nice but not as beautiful as Kristen. And Fran as 'The Pot-Head' milked the drug thing for what it was worth. Nice Bong though! (Ha-ha) Great character actor legends, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford did a very good sarcastic take as the supposedly villains of this piece.Amusing and somewhat funny too.

And last but not least, Sigourney Weaver appears at the end as the head-honcho. She seems to be making this her norm because she did the precise almost identical role in Paul(2011)!!? In that one she also appears at the end as the head-honcho!!? And also, in both she dies!!? Ha-ha! My buddies who I went to see this one with, said it was good, but only good for one viewing and that's it. I disagree. It's worth a couple of viewings and then it's done! (Ha-ha)

"The White Owl"
28 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Supposedly this film is a dramatization of events that occurred between October 1st through the 9th of 2000, in the Northern Alaskan town of Nome. To better explain the events of this story, the director included actual archived footage throughout the film. Every dramatized scene in this movie is supported by either archived audio, video or as it was related by Dr. Tyler during extensive interviews with the director. This footage was acquired from Nome psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler, who has personally documented over 65 hours of video and audio materials during the time of the incidents.

First of all the actors do not look like the suppose real people in the archived video. But all in involved did their best. Milla Jovovich as Dr. Tyler was OK. She has that intensity for this type of role.

Will Patton did much better as the Sheriff August who doubts Milla and thinks she has a lot to do with what is happening in Nome.. He did a great job. Only problem is that yes Nome has a police department but there are no sheriffs in the state of Alaska. So there goes the believable factor out the door.

Elias Koteas(one of my favorites) did a low-key job as Tyler's colleague and mentor Abel Campos. He didn't have much to do but it was nice having him around just in case something happens. This actor reminds me so much of Robert De Niro crossed with Harvey Keitel! He seems to have both those actors intensity to blow up any minute type of thing.

All in all not that bad of a movie. Whether it's true or not, it still deserves a view. I was surprised that there was no gory effects or something like that. Plus this being a film of Alien Abductions , there is no Alien to speak of!!? Just some owls(makes sense since owls & aliens have big eyes),so it has some relevance in some capacity. Still a nice thriller either way.

"Stomp It and Burn It"
28 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Oh where do I begin? I started to watch my watch just 15mins into this grade Z thrash. I know I'm in trouble when I start to look at the time during a movie! (Ha-ha)The acting is atrocious and way beyond amateurish. The only redeeming factor for me of this so-called film, is the musical score. It's really not that bad. Way better than the film! (Ha-ha) I would not hesitate to get the CD on this one but as far as the film goes, I would "Stomp It and Burn It"! (Ha-ha)

It looks like the cast had fun and all and maybe if they had a bigger budget who knows what they could have come up with. What they used though was these poor/weak Halloween masks and gloves that did not look believable at all. And the cartoonish animation of the "virus" was laughable.

"You Gotta Get To Where Nothing Means Nothing."
26 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
My 1st time seeing this film. I had heard it was a classic. I knew of the stars, the director , even who did the musical score! So I was hyped. I'm glad I finally seen it for myself.

Director Michael Mann's signature is all over this film. And Tangerine Dream was the perfect group to do the score. I had the album way before I had the movie! James Cann as 'Frank' did an amazing turn as the safe-cracking ex-con who just wants to do one more job and go straight. Tuesday Weld as 'Jessie' was very good also as his girlfriend then wife because she wanted to go somewhere also since she was literally going nowhere herself.

Willie Nelson had only two scenes but the 1st scene is still very much talked about. I, having seen it for the 1st time, felt a little uncomfortable about it at first. But then thinking Willie's 'Okla' is dying because of his heart condition and he is scared to die inside prison can somewhat explain the intensity of the scene. Here is his "son"(Caan's 'Frank') telling him that he wants to go straight and get married and have kids, yet Willie won't be around to see none of that because of his condition. Very sad and very tragic. So this whole talk of that scene having 'Homosexual' tendencies is complete ignorance and seen from a very macho-like stance. Why is it that two normal, straight, heterosexual men cannot care about each other so much especially if their is history between them is like a father and son type of relationship? Like I said it caught me off-guard at first because I did not know the dynamics of the characters and what and who they were to each other. A very intense and emotional scene. Willie did a excellent job and James trying to hold back the tears was very heartfelt.

Nice turn by James Belushi as Caan's friend 'Barry'.(This was his film debut) Very low-key performance from Belushi. Perfect balance to Caan 's character cause Caan was so hyped-up and intense and very low patience level all the time. Like a gasket waiting to blow. Like he did in the adoption scene and the 'Attaglia'scene with Tom Signorelli( who by the way did a great job as a slimy thug of the Mafia)

Robert Prosky did an excellent turn as the Big-Boss of the Mafia.(His film debut at 50+!) He seemed like a harmless grandfather-type but underneath he was a ruthless, back-stabbing, cold-blooded killer. His scene with Caan when he tells him "I own you basically so do what I say or else" speech is like wow! Chilling and priceless!

Dennis Farina plays one of Prosky's henchmen was to me somewhat wasted but ironically interesting also since in real life, he was a former Chicago police officer. he doesn't have much to do but be just another one of the Mafia's thugs.(Also his film debut).

Bruce A. Young (in his film debut) was credited in here as a Mechanic #2. His role role so minimal, I did not even see him! I remember him always in Risky Business(1983) as 'Jackie' the transsexual prostitute that visits Tom Cruise and as the chilling 'Jingles' in An Innocent Man(1989) terrorizing Tom Selleck in prison. His last film was in 2009. Hasn't done anything since.

Another great character actor who made his debut in here also as Mechanic #3 ,was John Kapelos. His role also so small, I did not even see him! Michael Mann used him again only this time on his TV show 'Miami Vice' in a episode of 1985. I remember him from countless roles in the 80's and 90's but mostly for his role in the Cult TV-series 'Forever Knight' as Det. Don Schanke from 1989-95. Nice to know and see that this talented actor's career is still going on strong to this very day.

Yet Another great character actor also made his film debut with this film (he participated in a TV mini-series prior), Mike Genovese. He didn't have much to here but was constantly in the scenes when Caan was on the phone , since he was the one giving him the phone! His role was as the 'Bartender at the Green Mill' Mike was a regular on TV series's; 'Falcon Crest'(1985) season, 'The Flash'(1990-91) season and 'E/R' in various episodes thru-out (1994-2000) His career is also still going very strong to this very day.

Also in this film was another great character actor, J. Jay Saunders as a Doctor. He is the one who gives the bad news to Caan in the scene where Willie's 'Okla' has passed away. He was in various TV series's in the mid 70's to the mid 80's. I last saw him in House Party(1990) as Tisha Campbell's dad. His last film was in 1994. He has not been seen since.

A great character actor I did not recognized because he was so young-looking and had hair, was Michael Paul Chan! He was the 'Waiter at Chinese Restaurant' Nice little bit for this still going on strong talented actor. He even had a few lines of dialog with Caan & Weld.

And last but certainly not least, the great William L. Petersen made his debut also in this film as a 'Katz & Jammer Bartender' I, to tell you the truth did not see him. But I guess a lot of other people neither cause he did not work again till 4 yrs later! He starred in To Live and Die in L.A.(1985) and Michael Mann used him again in a starring role no less in the Cult classic, Manhunter(1986) we all know he went into TV immortality as Gil Grissom in 'C.S.I.for 11 seasons! He also did the voice of Grissom for the video games based on the series.

"The Prince's of Comedy"
26 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
One of The Original Kings of Comedy, Cedric the Entertainer hosted the All-Star Comedy Jam in Phoenix, AZ with Executive Producer Shaquille O'Neal. What a show. Very .very funny. These 4 talented stand-up comedians should be called The Prince's of Comedy. That's how good and funny they were.

Cedric opens the show and of course is funny with his bit. He acknowledges Shaq and his wife since they both produce this show. he then goes onto his skit, which his topics include making fun of Shaq and talking about Presidents Obama and Bush. His bit of the shoe throwing at Bush is priceless! He then introduces the 1st up was 'In Livin' Color's Tommy Davidson. He is hyper and funny as hell. His skit/topic include 'Cops' and 'Sabado Gigante' with Don Francisco and Telemundo. It's hilarious and on target.

Cedric comes out again for a bit and introduces the next comedian which is Aries Spears(my favorite). He is great. His skit/topic includes the black/white thing, Denzel Washington in Training Day,his stab at Shaq and Charles Barkley,(Nelly walks in with Ashanti during his skit) and he closes his skit with his signature imitation on 4 of his favorite rappers:LLCoolJ, SnoopDoggyDogg,DMX and Jay-Z. Wow, classic!

Cedric comes out once again and acknowledges Katt Williams in the audience. And introduces DeRay Davis. He is funny. His skit/topics include HoodRats, Valentine's Day,Chris Brown & Rhianna, Black man/White woman, and Katt Williams, Next up is Kevin Hart. Talkinng about his family especially his daughter and son. Relationships, Shaq and his wife Shaunie. And woman in general. He closes the show. And what a show. Just one of the best!

"T Is for Terror!"
25 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Wow. This little short film at 4mins packs a wallop! Basically it caught me off guard! And what I mean by that is that I have a tendency to never want to know what type of film I'm gonna watch or who's in it type of thing and what's it about. Makes for more interesting viewing impact for me. This one just shocked me from left field! Nice! (Ha-Ha) Good thing I didn't eat before this!

'Sarah' ,played by Delphine Roussel, has just had a face lift done and boy oh boy does she have a bad day concerning the sutures! Her husband played by Robert Calwell does not help any because he is arguing with her behind her locked bedroom door and in a way causes her not to pay attention and be way more careful in what she is doing. And man do things get bad! (Excellent FX effects)

All in all Director Chris Nash got me good! Nice job Mr. Nash! I would definitely like to watch a full-feature scary film by this gentlemen! Highly recommended especially for Horror fans!

The S Word (2008)

"Shopping!"
25 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
A nice little funny short film. Dealing with the dreaded "S" word all we real men must go thru! "Shopping" with our girlfriends!(Ha-ha) And just like this short film implies, you can look but don't get caught! When one goes shopping with their partner, there is the code one must follow. Complete respect and no looking at eye-candy at all. That is the number one rule! (ha-ha) Second: Must find the coveted "Man-Couch" so no other man will sit on it! (Ha-ha) And third: No matter what she tries on and looks like , you must always say "You look great honey!"(HA-HA)

In this short our hero representing all men, 'Freddy' ,played brilliantly by Peter Pasco, struggles with the dynamics of what it really means to go shopping with his girlfriend, Vanessa, played nicely by lovely Kikey Castillo. The director, and co-starring in the beginning of 'Freddy's Hypothetical Analogical imagination sequences as 'The Sarge', is Kevin Sifuentes. He nicely and creatively directs this short funny film. Using Freddy's mind as the springboard to the hypothetical situations blowing up in Freddy's mind and exaggerating them for all their worth. Benito Martinez(The Shield) shows up in Freddy's imagination sequence as 'The talk he never had with his dad' Benito did OK but it kinda of dragged a little too long. Shorter would have made it more effective and funnier.

All in all a nice little film. Would not mind seeing a full feature and continuation of Freddy and his exaggerating mind

"Red, Blue and Green"
25 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
A very creepy little short. The music itself is also quite creepy and adds to the atmosphere of the short. It would be interesting to see what this director would do with a full-fledged scary movie. I think he could pull it off.

This short has a 1970's feel to it. It does not have a plot or storyline per say, just some random filming while experimenting with the various colors and combining them and getting weird results.

The director used his real-life wife as a person just randomly walking around in the fields.

Like I said a very little interesting creepy short. Not that bad but not that good either. it's stretching it at 9mins. Could have been a little shorter in my opinion.

Monsters (2010)

"Free Gas Mask!"
24 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Another disappointing alien/monster film. Maybe I saw it at the wrong time of day(early in the morning), maybe I was expecting something else all together, I don't know. All I know is that I was bored beyond belief. I guess I was just expecting way more action not realizing this is more of a love story than action one! The music by Jon Hopkins was really nice though.

1st of all the guy playing 'Andrew'(Scoot McNairy) to me his character in the movie was a total douche-bag , drunk disgusting excuse of a man. No wonder at 1st 'Samantha'(Whitney Able) did not want to really be around this loser. I can't believe that by the end of the film though the director would have you believe this spoiled Editor's daughter and this drunkard journalist have magically fallen in love! She never would have been in this predicament in the 1st place and would have been safely out of this infected zone had not this idiot of a journalist basically lost( it was stolen) her passport!! How could she fall for a loser like that? The night before they had a so-called date and he had a little too many drinks and he basically at the end of the 'date' just wanted to get in bed with her and have sex. What a disgusting loser! When the next morning comes around, she figures she could give him another chance in being a gentleman and finds him in bed with a prostitute! Wow, can't let this 'winner' get away honey! Please, give a break! (Ha-ha) Ironically, these two actors were boyfriend and girlfriend in real life! They are now happily married for real! :)

And then there is the issue of the so-called 'Monsters'. A bunch of Octopus-looking creatures. Wow. How suspenseful and terrifying is that? How convenient that you can only really see the "monsters somewhat clearly at the end of the film. By then I didn't care or care less. This was a 'Monster'movie alright. A Monster of a trash movie! But I gotta see it again and give it a chance. like I said I believe I saw it way to early in the morning. This is definitely a night movie. (Ha-ha)

Zombie Apocalypse (2011 TV Movie)
6/10
"Is There Any Humans Here?"
21 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Or are only zombies watching this flick? Ha-ha. All in all not so bad. Compared to some of the other stinkers I have been seeing , this one was good. I had heard that this film wasn't that great but I still had high hopes because Ving Rhames was in it. This makes if I'm not mistaken his 3rd trip into the Zombie genre. having starred in the great remake "Dawn of the Dead"(2004) and the other not so good remake "Day of the Dead(2008). so I was gonna watch it regardless. I'm glad I did.

This movie has many 1st's for me. Where apparently animals now can be turned! Results:A Zombie dog and a Zombie tiger! Classic! It also has slow-moving zombies as well as fast-moving ones. And smart-ones also! Nice. And if I'm not mistaken, the 1st zombie movie where they constantly say the word 'Zombie!?"

Ving Rhames has a nice role here as a background player but still in most of the scenes as Big-guy Henry. Who carries a big old sledge-hammer and bashes many a zombies with it. He mostly protects the Samurai-sword wielding 'Cassie'(played by Lovely Lesley-Ann Brandt) who really does not need protection cause she can cut those zombies petty good on her own.Next is Gary Weeks as 'Mack' who in a way is the leader of this survivor group. He did a pretty good acting as I could tell. Eddie Steeples ('My Name is Earl' fame)had a thankless bit as 'Billy'. This funny actor was in my opinion wasted. The only think he did do was start the trend of saying 'Zombie' throughout the film! Next I mention the lovely Lilian Bowden because she reminds me so much of another beautiful Eurasian actress: Nia Peeples. At 1st I thought she was Nia! And last but not least Taryn Manning as 'Ramona' was also wasted in her basically doing nothing but whine about her lost comrades role and oh yeah, killed just one zombie. Wow.

The film was all basically C.G.I effects but I give them 'A' for effort. The so-called Zombie Tiger was not bad but not that good either. The Sabre-toothed Tiger from "10,000 BC (2008) was just a little better to give you an idea. But nice concept though. All the head-shots and sword cutting and explosions plus arrows: C.G.I. It would have benefited more if the soundtrack could have been more hardcore Blackmetal/Deathmetal like what Zack Snyder did in his classic 'Dawn of the Dead'

All in all, it at least's deserves a viewing. You get to hear Ving Rhames say a 'Riply-like from Aliens' quote: "Here kitty, kitty,I'm not through with you b*^#%!" Classic! Plus for the 1st time, I see him scared look when in a nice tense scene, he sledge-hammers a real big 6'6' zombie and it does nothing to the zombie who just shrugs it off and Ving's scared look is priceless! Then he starts running like crazy! Funny!

"The Boys Are Back !"
18 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
But this time around they are not welcomed!. Don't know what happened. Same director, same leading stars, almost the same premises and what a misfire! What a shame. I was really looking forward to seeing this sequel because of the classic "48 HRS"(1982) before it. But what a disappointment. This one doe not even have a Nolte vs Eddie rematch fight! :(

It's like it was trying to hard to replicate the success of the 1st one.(Big mistake) Even having the same music and actors and the most unbelievable , the same lines!!? Being repeated here again just made them lose all their power per say:(Call for help now!) (Roxanne!..) Nolte calling Eddie convict etc...had this been more of homage then maybe it would have worked differently.

In this one Eddie Murphy is now the star and Nick Nolte his co-star. They still have that chemistry but somehow it just isn't the same or funny like it was in the original. Brion James returns as 'Ben Kehoe' from the original, but now in a bigger role as in the most unbelievable ridiculous "I can't believe I gotta swallow this one"way. He turns out to be now the main bad guy(the 'Ice Man')this in turn explains in some crazy way that it was Kehoe's money that 'Reggie Hammond'(Murphy) stole in the 1st movie!!?? What the hell??!! That was the best they could come up with as a story? gimme a break! Why did he wait till the sequel to get Eddie killed??! Doesn't make sense! Another actor from the original is "supposedly" here also(I didn't see him at all) and that is the great Frank McRae as 'Capt. Haden',he is listed here on IMDb in this film as uncredited but I still not see him for nothing. Annette O'Toole, who played 'Jack Cates's girl 'Elaine' in the original,(wisely) sat this one out as they explain that she and Jack are now divorced and she went back home somewhere.

Of the "new blood" we have the great Kevin Tighe doing what he does best, playing a slimy , sleazy type of role. Here he is 'Blake Wilson' the Internal Affairs guy out to get Nolte. good turn for him. He even gets punched out big time by Nolte! Next we have the great(and one of my favorites) Ed O'Ross in a thankless role as a crooked cop who is in cahoots with the Ice Man. He had a much better role earlier in Walter Hill's "Red Heat(1988) as Viktor 'Rosta' Rostavili. Here, he was just wasted.

The main villain here is played by none-other than the great Andrew Divoff. He plays 'Cherry Ganz' the brother of Albert Ganz from the original that was played by the great James Remar. Divoff did a believable(even with the fake wig and stuff) job, even sounded a lot like Remar's Ganz but then again they are suppose to be 'brothers' so that totally worked for me.

i was surprised to see the great Bernie Casey.Don't get me wrong, he did a great turn as 'Kirkland Smith' the man inside prison with Murphy that Eddie 'owes' a favor big-time. His role was brief but good. His daughter in this film is played by Tisha Cambell(Gina from 'Martin' fame) that was nice but she came out to close to the end and once again I feel she was wasted in her brief thankless role. it would have been interesting to have had her come out earlier and see if she and Murphy would have had some chemistry. Oh well, we will never know.

It looks like director Walter Hill uses many of the actors he has worked with in his prior films. Like for instance Brent Jennings who was in Hill's "Red Heat(1988) as 'Abdul Elijah'. here he has the role of 'Tyrone Burroughs' the so-called 'Ice-Man's right-hand man.It was a OK role but I feel he was wasted also. Another actor used was the late Edward Walsh, who sadly this was his final film. he had a brief role also as a fellow detective of Nolte and was just not used properly like he was in Hill's debut "Hard Times"(1975) as the sleazy, double-crossing 'Pettibon'. This film was not a good final swansong for him.

The late character actor of countless "B" Movies Hoke Howell had a brief bit here as an ill-fated bartender. Stuntman/actor Allan Graf did both jobs in this one also in his brief bit as the ill-fated bus driver. Also performing stunts only was the beautiful and talented Patricia Tallman.

Two very surprising bits that were so brief you better not blink type were from two very distinguished Asian actors: George 'kee' Cheung and Dana Lee. I barely saw George's scene but missed Dana's completely. What made these very talented actors at this juncture of their long career's take these throwaway bit roles is a mystery to me. Maybe they were Walter Hill's friends and did it for a lark or they were just happy to be working and getting paid no matter what the role required. Complete mystery. Ironically, these two gentlemen had previously worked together 5 years earlier in "Rambo:First Blood part 2"(1985) in way better roles being the bad guys/villains to Stallone's Rambo.

And last but certainly not least, is the blink and you'll miss it scene of the great Kitten Natividad shown briefly as a nude stripper in a movie playing in the background as the action/climax just tears up the screen she is on. I guess you gotta take what you can in Hollywood and I'm thinking that's just what these actors all did! :)

P.S. That's none-other than Jesse Johnson (formerly of The Time) playing at the club the '48 HRS' signature song, "The Boys Are Back In Town"

" Pulling a Trigger is Just Like Ordering a Takeout. "
14 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I was sitting at home relaxing listening to some Earth,Wind and Fire, and I get a text from my buds that they are going to go see a new film called The Raid:Redemption. Said if I wanna go,they would pick me up. I said give me a minute I'll let you know. I went on the IMDb to see the trailer and it looked OK and like a good Martial Arts film. So I text-ed my buds , cool pick me up and they did and we went.

Man, I should have stayed home. Wasted a good $11 bucks for a mediocre film.I mean it does have a lot of action in it but after a while it just leaves you numb. It was more like video game than a film. The action got to a point it was ridiculous.

I mean it looked like everybody the SWAT team encountered knew how to fight!? And the few residents that were good , did not for one second decide to call for back-up for these Swat guys who were being massacred one by one. The whole film looked like a set-up for one fight scene to another. they all looked the same. These guys were like super-powered because they would keep getting up and taking more hits!? They had to kill them for in order for them to stop.

Some fight scenes lasted so long that if you went to the bathroom and came back, you wouldn't have missed anything because they would still be fighting!? Anyways, i didn't recognize anyone here not even the director, who by the way annoyed the hell out of me with his shaky camera and weird angle shots. This whole turkey was just a bunch of hype and very bad. Worth barely only one viewing if at that!

"Don't... Poke... The Alien!"
13 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Wow. More like "Don't ..Watch... This Crap!" What a complete piece of trash. Where do I begin? What was so annoying than anything else was the so-called music score. It just ruined it for me with that crappy happy go-lucky theme to it. It was not suspenseful at all. It sounded like it barely belonged in a cartoon not a Sci-fi Thriller.

I barely gave it a 2 star rating only because I recognized John Rhyes-Davies (Sallah from Raiders of the Lost Ark & Prof. Arturo from Sliders) I could believe how much weight he had lost. He didn't even last 15mins in this turkey. I'm thinking he realized what a crap he was in and demanded to be killed off as soon as possible! ha ha The only other person I recognized was Joe Flanigan(Stargate:Atlantis 's John Sheppard). He was OK I guess considering the type of movie this was and the role he was playing. And as far as I'm concerned, everyone else I couldn't wait for the half dinosaur/alien to kill them all and have this fiasco of a film be done and over with.

The CGI was not that great either and this alien dimension is apparently populated by only one type of carnivorous animal?. Where are the other animals which would be required as prey?? Gimme a break! And apparently if you get hurt, you heal like magic in this dimension!? Like that annoying idiot that got hurt really bad with a whole pipe that went right thru his right chest/shoulder area and the soldier just pulls it out and 5 minutes later , he's walking and moving like nothing happen!? Like he just got a scratch! Come on! ScyFy, I want my 84mins back! Ha-ha

"Sometimes Choosing Life Is Just Choosing a More Painful Form of Death. "
13 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Nice little thriller starring a relatively small cast. Chris Pine and Lou Taylor Pucci are brothers trying to survive in a world that has been and is being wipe out from some-kind of virus. Of the two Pine shines way much better.

Piper Perabo and Emily VanCamp are the girlfriends. Of the two Perabo stands out somewhat. Christopher Meloni did a great turn as a desperate father trying to get his sick/infested daughter to a safe facility and have her seen by some doctor. Mark Moses has a very good cameo bit as the doctor who has given up big time in finding a cure and prefers a most tragic way to end things.

A scary movie without that much scares.? More suspense and drama then anything else. And not that gory at all!. I was very surprised. it kept my attention even though it is never fully explained what truly has happen to the world in general and where is it that they are going. Even at it's short running time, it is still worth a look.

Walk Proud (1979)

Emiliano Zapata! Not!
13 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Very interesting little gang drama movie. Robbie Benson as a Chicano named Emilio Mendez was an experience to see. I feel he did a good job. Complete with brown contacts and a brown tan! He looked so different. i always wondered how the movie would played had he just used his own eye color as there is light eye-colored Latinos.he probably would have been called "El Guero"(The White Boy)

Sarah Holcomb did an interesting part as the Anglo girl who falls in love with Benson's Chicano boy. Too bad she basically did no more acting after this.(she did 4 movies and a video in all her short career!) Henry Darrow (whose real is Enrique Tomás Delgado) did a OK turn as Mike Serrano. How ironic that in the 60's, Darrow was the ultimate Latin heartthrob on television. With a smooth, ingratiating style and a killer smile that brightened up the small screen. The same way Benson was now doing here.

Pepe Serna as Cesar, the leader of the gang, seemed a little to old (for me) somewhat to be the leader of any gang. He would have done better in the Henry Darrow role I think. Trinidad Silva did much better as Dagger. He just seem more real and more relaxed as if that was just really him.. I'll always remember him as 'Frog' in the film Colors(1988) Too bad he he was killed that same year in a car accident. he was a very decent actor.

Ji-Tu Cumbuka had a nice role as Sgt. Gannett who is investigating the gang on many related charges. Eloy Casados was OK as the leader of the opposing gang and Daniel Faraldo was somewhat over acting as El Tigre, a member of Casado's gang. Faraldo nowadays somewhat resembles Al Pacino! Lol Irene DeBari as Benson's mom did a credible job. Gary'Carlos'Cervantes as always does a good "Homeboy from the Barrio" A similar role he has done in many roles. Panchito Gomez had a little role here but he was still a little one himself(He was 15 but looked younger). Panchito was always a good reliable little actor for these type of movies but just vanished in 2003 and hasn't been seen since, And Angel Salazar, who had a minor role here but 4yrslater would rise to 'A' class with Scarface(1983) as Chi Chi with Al Pacino.

interesting trivia: 3 actors here later went on to star in Scarface(1983): Pepe Serna,Angel Salazar and Gary 'Carlos'Cervantes. Serna received 4th billing here but in Scarface, he got 12th. While Salazar who got 29th here got 10th in Scarface and Cervantes who got 16th billing here, got 25th in Scarface! my how things change.

And last but not least, Thomas Rosales Jr. a staple in almost all action films as a stunt person, did the stunts for this film also. Interesting choice of music, Elton John and and Santana even Benson singing his own composition: "Adios Yesterday"

"Sorry You Got Killed By My Dad. "
11 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I was very disappointed by this film. I guess I was expecting something more from Simon Pegg & Nick Frost a la 'Shaun of the Dead' way. But no way. This was like a complete turn around and they were not even funny to me at all. In fact they were really kinda of annoying as two British nerds who are so naive and dumb and act like two little kids.. They overkilled the nerdness. I don't know about these things since I was never a nerd anyways so who knows what I missed.

Pegg & Frost look just a tad too old to be believable as these two naive nerds. But I guess that's what the script called for and they did what they could. Jason Bateman came off a little better playing a straight laced, no humor type FBI guy named Agent Zoil. Lovely Kristen Wiig did OK but she really didn't shine on either as a also naive bible-raised sheltered girl who gets involved with our nerdy duo. Bill Hader as one of Bateman's cronies did a little better and that's why I can see he lasted a little longer than the other guy who was his partner. The great Jeffrey Tambor had a nice cameo bit as the eccentric and weird sci-fi writer Adam Shadowchild.(interesting note:Both he and Bateman plus the director had worked together on Arrested Development) Blythe Danner had a nice turn as the grown up version of the child who encountered the alien at the start of the movie. reminded me a lot of Melinda Dillon's character from 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' I'm thinking yet another homage as this movie is filled with quotes and references to other similar themed movies. Blythe even gets to say one of the most classical lines in movie history to none other than Sigourney Weaver! Who actually said it in her 'Alien movie 'character,Ripley! "Get away from her ! You B*$%^&!"

Seth Rogen as the voice of Paul did nothing for me. Had he done it where every time Paul encountered a human being with different accents and he per say would have taken the accents himself in a mocking making fun type of way ,then maybe it would have been amusing for me but this way with Seth just being Seth and talking like a complete know it all annoying surfer/valley dude voice, just did not cut it for me. Maybe Seth Rogen is not that talented enough to pull it off with accents and voices as would a Robin Williams or Jim Carrey could , who by the way would have been excellent casting cause either of those two guys would just have 'nailed it' as Paul's voice. But oh well, maybe in the sequel.

Oh and by the way Steven Spielberg has a voice credit cameo. That to me is the final indicator that this whole film was but a homage to him mainly and his films and also a nod to all the other great Sci-Fi themed movies that came before it. It even opens with Comic-Con with a lot of Star Wars types and even the bar they go to has the Mos Eisley Catina song from Star Wars playing.

All in all, nice but no thanks.

Mr. Jones (1993)

"Why Do Only Children Have Flying Dreams?"
10 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Mr. Jones: "Give me this. This first day, I work for free. I give it to you, its a gift. Second day, you pay me for two days. Third day, I have your job."

A little gem of a movie. Yes it's subject matter (Bi-polarism and mental illness, and what not) are a tragic and sad theme. But that is why we watch and we learn sometimes from movies.

Richard Gere shines as Mr.Jones. he reminds me of the character 'Jesse Lujack' he played in his movie Breathless(1983). Same hyped up energy. He still looks sexy enough for you as the viewer to believe that a woman doctor or woman bank cashier would risk their jobs and sanity for him. Lena Olin is good also as the doctor treating Gere and falls for his crazy charms. Anne Bancroft did an OK turn as Lena's fellow doctor and superior ,Dr. Catherine Holland . Delroy Lindo had a wonderful turn as Howard, the family man who wants to help Jones by giving him friendship. Lauren Tom does a credible job as the ill-fated and mentally unstable patient Amanda Chang. Ana Maria Horsford( from'Friday' fame) has a basically nice cameo as a judge. Thomas Mikal Ford (Tommy from Martin fame) also has a nice bit as a mentally ill patient who can be violent. And last but not least, comic character actor Taylor Negron(Easy Money's Julio)has a nice bit also as a helpless victim of Jones, when said Jones just steals his motorcycle!

Actors that got 'wasted' for me were great character actors Sal Lopez(American me) and Bill Moseley(The Devil's Rejects) and Valente Rodriguez(The George Lopez Show) and last but not least,Lucinda Jenny(Rain Man). What I mean by wasted is that their roles were so minimal and inconsequential that I did not see them though they are listed in the credits. What a shame, good talent put to waste.

But on a different note and a nice uncredited cameo bit was done by none other than , Bill Pullman as the Construction Site Foreman who is another victim of Jones who falls for his 'charm' and gives a him job(not a good idea).

All in all, one of my favorites. Check it out!

"They Won't BeBack... I Don't Think They Like Me."
10 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting UFO abduction story. Based on real life incidents involving the real Travis Walton. D.B. Sweeney plays Walton and does a credible job. As does Robert Patrick as Walton's brother-in-law,Mike Rogers. Craig Sheffer and Peter Berg are OK in their brief roles but Henry Thomas (E.T.) and Bradley Gregg as wasted in theirs. As is the lovely Kathleen Wilhoite as Roger's wife. But it was nice to know they are in the background.

The late great Noble Willigham was excellent casting as the sheriff who wants to believe the boys of the UFO story but just can't. James Garner also did very good in his sleazy/slimy role as the investigator trying to get the boys to just fess up and confess they killed Travis and stop lying with the so-called UFO story.

I was surprised to see a actor of the name of Robert Covarrubias in the role as a persistent news reporter. Nice. I last remember him from Boulevard Nights(1979)(his debut) as a local rival homeboy from the barrio. Another actor I know but really did not see (because his role was so minimal!) was Peter Mark Vasquez.(Colors,Blood In-Blood Out)

All in all a good film. Highly recommended.

The Quadroon (2008)

"You Gotta Be a Buffoon To Watch This"

Warning: Spoilers
A very little(Thank God) weird little short. I did not get it at all. Two hillbilly white trash types goes out hunting into the forest and shoot at some poor turkeys and then out of nowhere The Quadroon?(a very poor imitation of the Swamp Thing) shows up and starts break-dancing!? This somehow causes the hunters to bleed and basically kills them!? WTF?

The only thing I liked somewhat from this fiasco was the music score. Now that was not that bad and since this was a a dialog free short, at least it had some good instrumental music in it. My guess is this Quadroon is some kind of alien being and it was here to protect wildlife. Who knows and who cares? I'm glad the hunters met their end anyways and so did this short.

Primary Next Of Kin

Warning: Spoilers
What a little gem of a short film. It packs a wallop in it's short time frame. Very sad and tragic duty these individuals as they have to be the "bearer of bad news" to the families that have lost a love one in action.

Based on a episode from the TV movie TAKE 3. Take 3 is a 13 episode series that promotes the awareness of original, multi-ethnic and multicultural, feature-length films, and film shorts, that have been written, directed, or produced, primarily by independent filmmakers of color, women filmmakers and filmmakers in general that feature ethnically-diverse casting and well known popular actors.

Both Archie Drury and Robert Ri'chard are excellently cast as the soldiers who bring the devastating sad news to the families of the recently deceased. Archie Drury , who looks and acts just like a poor man's version of Tom Cruise, left quite an impression on me.(gave me an idea how Tom Cruise could have handle this role had he done it) Robert Ri'chard also did a great job and both these talented actors worked well together.

Irma P Hall did a nice turn as a distraught grandmother who cannot except the bad news given to her about her granddaughter and Danny Glover had a nice cameo bit as a retired military whose son was killed in action and takes the news strongly but very heavily also. And last but not least, the last family these two soldiers must visit is a mother with her daughter and give her the bad news of their loved one..The little girl is played by Elle Fanning, sister of Dakota Fanning.

I enjoyed this short film even though it was very sad but it was very real and that made it for me a little gem.

"No More Loneliness. No More Pain. No More Medication."
8 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
A very little weird short film. Concerning a very touchy and disturbing story line: Suicide. Two men , who looks like they are or were friends, decide to end it all. Unlike the now classic scene in Micheal Cimino's The Deer Hunter(1978) with Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken, this short in any way shape or form cannot duplicate or attempt to duplicate it.

The way Danny Lau played the troubled man part got on my nerves because I wasn't sure if he was actually mentally ill or was so drugged up on drugs that he was like that. Garett Engelmann on the other hand playing the bastard friend was like trying to imitate Edward Norton's style of acting and I give him a "A" for effort but come on. All in all not that bad but not that good either.

" New Currency of the World"
4 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Turns out the world is now in a 120 degrees temperature. And we now have a curfew where you can't be outside at full blast. In this nightmare world we have our hero Bato(Elvis Nolasco) trying to survive this hell on earth. He has a baby coming and turns out he has no money so....

That's the premises of this short intriguing short. But it really did nothing for me, Maybe had it been longer than 15mins maybe it would have given the characters time to "flesh" out a little better. Maybe then my opinion would change on how I feel about this short film.

It is hard to judge a film at 15mins long but the director can sometimes be the ones at fault not the writers.

"Freaky Angel Dude"

Warning: Spoilers
A very interesting little short. About a individual who commits suicide...or does he? Stuck in a limbo he has a chance to "redeem" himself by saving a kid who's gonna commit suicide also! Not a good choice! The whole concept of dying and suicide are discussed and dissected for all it's worth. Too bad the acting was not that good or that believable but like I said , interesting concept nonetheless.

Dan Madonia (Chris) was a little better than David Kraai (Will) who was way to amateur to do this role. The main focus is on these two leads and there lies the major fault. They sound like they are reading from a scrip!.It would have worked better if they would have improvised. That would have made it more believable I think.

Warning: Spoilers
I wish I could write my review in french but unfortunately I cannot. Where do I begin? even at 2mins , This felt way to long. I could not wait for it to be over. It was that bad. I want my 2mins back!

The music was barely OK. that's why I gave it one star, otherwise i give it zero . Another one of these shorts that even at 2mins , it's still feels too long! it's like oh my God, what the heck is this garbage? i was expecting something with a little more juice from the French but who knew? but then again that's just the way it goes.

You really have to sort out the bad from the good. And sometimes that can take time.
