Has its heart in the right place but don't expect much outside of a few good performances.
13 February 2008
Decent but contrived comedy that has its heart in the right place but depends more on old plot twists than telling a compelling story. The mystery of who's the mom of Abigail Breslin's character is really easy if you're in tune to the laws of romantic comedies and the story of how it happens just does not jell very well at all. It's more a romantic who dun it than a romantic comedy and you get bored after a while with it, especially when you can see the ending already before the actual film ends. But the film has its heart in the right place and it's not hard to like it, especially if you have a few very good performances that are giving the film more than it deserves. Ryan Reynolds does a great job as the hero of the piece and he has great chemistry with Rachel Weisz, who is just flat out fun, sexy and charismatic. Kevin Klein is fun as well as the other man in Weisz's characters life. Too bad for Reynolds though that both Weisz and Klein are not in the film that much because they are the best things about this movie and while they are not on screen, Reynolds basically has to fiend for himself in dealing with less interesting characters and predicament and that's where the film begins to lose its charm. Isla Fisher is adorable and sweet but there is nothing much to her character that we have not seen before and Elisabeth Banks is fine with a character that she manages to give some life to despite the fact of how one dimensional she is.

The film has a warm heart but it takes quite a lot for it to make the viewer forget how contrived it really is and its loses its focus on what it wants to be and that's not a good thing if you want the viewer to stay interested in it.

Walking Tall (2004)
3/10
For knuckle heads only
4 April 2004
Walking Tall is a remake of a Joe Don Baker movie that was bad to begin with, so the remake is a bit of a better movie but not by much. I do admit that The Rock is a turning out to be a better actor than I expected but he keeps doing bad movie, which is a shame because he does have potential. The movie is basically a revenge movie with The Rock betting the crap out of bad guys with a huge two by four, which bear to mind is not bad but with a script that feels like it was written on the fly, it just does not fly off the ground. I've follow most of the movies The Rock has done, going from the Scorpion King to The Rundown (Two movie, that's all) and this film is his best but if he wants to get into a serious movie career, he better start choosing his roles carefully.

Pleasantville (1998)
10/10
Good fantasy film that is poignant in its views
4 April 2004
Pleasantville is cut from the same cloth as the Back to The future movies but it's a lot more serious than they in terms of what its trying to say are. It deals with intolerance, and the way people refuse to change for the better. Toby Maguire and Reese Witherspoon are great as the brother and sister duo who travels to this fictional television town and causes mayhem with their modern ways of doing things. In their wake find a town that is devoid of feelings and maturity, and find out that people in this town are not what they seems once they get a tasted of the outside world. William H Macy, Joan Allen, and J.T. Walsh rounds out the cast as this film becomes darker as it progress, and more serious are it tackles real life issues concerning racism and the propaganda spun from the towns people who rather not change for the better. It's a well rounded movie that really hits the mark on what its trying to say, and its probably one of the best movies to come out in recent years.
