Shetland: Episode #8.1 (2023)
Was the language always this trashy?
We were willing to give the new version a shot. I always liked Alison O'Donnell, and I thought Ashley Jensen would add a different flavor, so I welcomed her. The rub, however, is the "mature" language. I don't remember so many uses of f%$k and s$$t. It's excessive, unnecessary and interrupted the flow of the story. We won't be watching the rest of the season.
Really GOOD writers do not need to pepper foul language so thoroughly from start to finish. It's lazy writing. The show has wonderful scenery, good local actors, and interesting plots, totally ruined by trashy language. I know many will say, "that's how people talk," but it's really not. We switched to "Doc Martin," with nary a curse word to be heard.
Death in Paradise: Murder on Mosquito Island (2020)
Deja vu all over again
I remember this from a previous season, only the DI and police officers are different. Still like the show but, good grief, surely they could write more original scripts. Love Ruby, Madame Mayor, and JP, but they should give Madeleine more to do.

I'm writing this after seeing episode 2
Throughout the first 3 seasons, there were some episodes that I loved more than others, but even the less-loved were consistently good. After 11 months of waiting for Season 4, I was quite disappointed with this episode. The directing was clunky, CGI was terrible, and the attempt at Theatre of Alienation at the end fell flat for me, snapping me out of the scene. I was no longer excited about Season 4, even though Drums of Autumn is my favorite book in the series, and I did not stay up last night to watch episode 2, afraid to be disappointed again. I needn't have worried. Episode 2 was great, and we seem to be back on track.
