Quatermass and the Pit (1967)
Interesting and unsettling movie - what if......?
Wow, what a film... this is one film you will remember for a long time afterwards... not for the special effects... but the very intelligent storyline. I am not going to give anything away but it will truly make you think twice about our very existence, and about the evolution of humans in general. If this film was remade today with updated effects and the like... it would scare the living pants of people!! Just remember this film was made in 1967 - and as such the technology used back then was a little ropey to say the least - but this puts more emphasis on the acting by the characters and 'flavour' to the script.Too many films nowadays rely heavily on special effects to make them fly... so stories and acting are drab... not in this film! The final result you have a film which oodles atmosphere. Great film that will be extremely valued with those that have an interest in history / science / horror / suspense / action - all into one!!! 9 out of 10 given as I feel the special effects are dated now but still have the power to do what they intended without looking silly. Otherwise 10 out of 10 for a fine story and a roller-coaster in suspense! Enjoy!
Volcano (1997)
Great movie spoiled in parts
This movie has the momentum to keep it going, but WHY OH WHY have the downright seedy any cheesy 'racial harmony' clips? not that I don't agree with racial harmony, as I come from one of the most tolerant countries in the world... but WHY include them... they just spoil a good film. And why does everything go suddenly quiet when these are shown? its as if even the lava stops flowing until the scene is over LOL! The guy that takes over in the control room does a great job - in fact one scene where the lava pushes up out the street, he is seen to be staring in disbelief, muttering but cannot say anything for shock - exactly as you would probably act in a similar situation. As for the brat at the end muttering that everyone looks the same.... Don't even get me started on that one.... 'tackiest line ever or what!' If you like lava or volcanoes like I do then you should be satisfied by the main story... but the cringe-worthy inserts are just NOT needed.
Skyway to Death (1974)
Oldie but a goodie !
I first saw this movie way back in the eighties, and because there are few cable car disaster movies I remember it quite well. I actually taped it in the late 90's when it was on TV for old times sake, and I still have it somewhere! All the action takes place on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway (they even have their own website - check it out!). some of the effects are typical '70's', but its an OK film all in all. Some of the exterior shots are so obviously done in a studio (climbing up the gooseneck of the cable car etc) but then again some of the shots of the car near the end in its 'out of control' mode are very clever and sure get the adrenaline pumping - excellent. A remake could be easily done on this theme, as a lot of people would be genuinely scared if trapped and hanging in the mid-air. I know I would!
