Mlyn i krzyz (2011)
A Magnificent and Intelligent Commentary on Politics vs People
First, the film is based both on an excellent script and the work of a superb artist, Flemish master Pieter Bruegel. Next, the fact that the screenwriters and the director had the insight to make this film gives us hope that civilization has evolved. The original analysis of Bruegel's work by Michael Francis Gibson, who wrote the book on which the script was based, inspired Majewski to create the film--a feat, nothing less. One art form--painting--comes alive in another art form, film. Brilliantly conceived and executed.
It is ultimately of little consequence that the film was not a 'box- office success' of epic proportions. Whoever wants to understand both art and the forces that shape civilization-- please see this film.
Tuck Everlasting (2002)
Great Family Movie with a Conscience
The plot of this movie is intriguing. Yes, you will have questions. But almost all of the questions will be answered by the ending. The big question it asks, and answers, is What is life all about?
Most of us think at first that if we could live forever, it would be great. This film shows you the joy of life and how you might use it, share it-- or what it will cost you if you can't share it or live it with loved ones. It also causes you to re-consider the idea of being forever young--particularly if that were to happen, but not by choice.
The advice the dad gives in the boat scene with Winnie is thought- provoking (William Hurt, in one of his best roles). Cissy Spacek is also excellent as mother Tuck. By the end of the film, Winnie has seen a lot and gets to make an amazing and mature choice that obviously guides the rest of her life. In a sense, she is way ahead of Jesse Tuck now.
The performances are all good, particularly those who play the Tucks. All of the characters are more or less interesting or amusing, but the romance and the wisdom that come of Winnie's meeting with the Tuck family are inspiring and life-changing. The performances of the entire cast--and the life-story demonstrated by each character--contribute to Winnie's dramatic acceptance of the natural decision she must make.
All the characters in the film--all but the eerie Man in Yellow brilliantly played by Ben Kingsley--agree that life is about family. Winnie learns it is also about being able to experience different periods in your own development, and changes in your own perspective.
An interesting "What if," Tuck Everlasting is a great movie that helps us think about what we want in life and about who we are. This is the kind of movie you will want to watch once a year.
Timeline (2003)
Great movie with HEART
I watched this film when it came out (2003) and then again recently on DVD (2012). I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it and appreciated it the second time around. Live and learn!
This movie was fun to watch at home and was not meant to be the perfect high-tech thriller. The history part (high Middle Ages) worked well with the sci-fi. The DVD also has sections on the making of the movie, which are inspiring if you are a film buff.
The excellent cast worked well together and the production company went all the way to research and produce a film about a specific historical period. The idea of family--and the love story between Marek and Clair-- make a serious point that really works.
The theme of love is just what we need in 2012. A great family film!
