Il caimano (2006)
A machine gun movie
I watched the movie soon after it came out and was delighted to notice the soft touch the director succeeded in applying to so many heavy subjects: family, homosexuality, Italian current feeling, politics, balance between different powers. It seemed like the movie moved a machine gun over those different subjects without really wanting to hurt anyone, or not quite the most obvious targets. In fact women are showed as strong and hard but also a bit able to take life with a certain ease, Berlusconi itself seems like a way to attack a certain right wing politic and a way of life at all different of the one Berlusconi itself embodies.
Tha group that seems to come out without any excuse is the one of the political judges that are really left without any hope in the wonderful final sequence.
The Ring Two (2005)
A fractal movie
Well, I marked the article as a spoiler but it is sort of inappropriate as I came to this interpretation some time after having seen the movie. Anyway the structure of the very movie is stunning: it comes out as the whole film provides the contents for the next videotape! I was brought to those reflections by the actions performed by the main actress in the old house and afterward mimicking those of the woman in the videocassette: watching herself at the mirror, reading the photo album to end up throwing herself from the cliff. Moreover the last frame of the movie before the title looks properly like the end of a videotape, if you look well. Also the well is closed in the videotape the way the actress leaves it when she exits from it. The message I got is that the girl leaves the victim alone only when she kills her son and kills herself the same way as her own mum did. At that point she leaves the world and probably re-enters into a new cassette displaying the story of the most recent "mother" as a form of guideline to find the next "mum" until someone watches it and then... back to movie one.
