47 Ronin (2013)
An insult to Japanese culture
From the opening scene I knew this was going to be bad, I was wrong, it was so much worse.
If this were written by a 12 year-old whose only exposure to Japanese culture was Pokemon, I'd expect a better script. If it starred the cast of Duck Dynasty, I'd expect better acting. But it wasn't and that's what makes this movie such a tragedy.
The only redeeming thing about this movie was the costuming and set designs, and even they seemed to be packed with everything they could jam in them from the prop department.
Inane, clichéd, dull, I could go on. I'd rather not, it's not worth the words to describe how bad this film is and what an insult it is the Japanese culture, history and those who appreciate it.
The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)
A Perfect Film
I have seen The Hud a half dozen times and it never gets old. From the opening sequence to the closing musical score this film keeps me enraptured.
The art directing, the costumes, the music, the script all work together to make a movie of unprecedented beauty. Tim Robbins is perfect in this role and the supporting cast all come off the screen as unforgettable characters I proudly tell anyone who asks that this is my favorite film of all times.
Sure, sure, art is subjective and some people do not care for such films. I feel sorry for them.
This is a perfect film.
Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome (2012)
Worth Downloading and adding to your Battlestar Box Set.
Set in the tenth year of the First Cylon War, the series follows a young William Adama (Luke Pasqualino) on a routine mission that quickly turns dangerous. This 10-episode online series from Machinima.com keeps the franchise alive for old fans and may even garner some new ones.
With the same feel as the 2004 TV series, 'BG Blood and Chrome' stands on its own as a well-written SF drama. The CGI at times appears overused in the first twelve-minute episode, by the second installment it blends well enough into the background.
With veteran Battlestar writer Michael Taylor as the executive producer I don't expect any hackneyed scenes or convoluted plot devices that plagued the final season of the TV series. The story is straight-forward hardcore science fiction. See toaster, shoot toaster. Just what the doctor ordered for those needing a deep space fix.
World Without End (2012)
Good Historical Drama
This new historical drama based on the Ken Follett novel of the same name is well worth watching and a must see for any historical fan. It is set in the fictional English town of Kingsbridge at the onset of the Hundred Years' War and (coming soon) the Black Death.
Sure it had political intrigue, backstabbing and more hangings than ham in a smokehouse. What makes it stands out is the generous production that historical dramas rarely get. You can thank Tony and Ridley Scott for backing this worthy tale and the set locations that sets the stage. The acting as good so far, nothing great with one notable exception Cynthia Nixon takes to her role deftly.
The first episode opens with Edward II surrendering to his French wife who crowns their son Edward III. In the aftermath of the war certain nobles are accused of treason by supporting the defeated king. Lands are forfeited, families destroyed and a slew of characters from the hot queen (Aure Atika) to a corpse picking mercenary keeps the pace moving without getting confusing.
Aside from the royal treachery the show deals attacks medieval medicine in a humorous and sometimes heavy handed way. The old healer Brother Joseph (David Bradley) adheres to bloodletting and dung poultices while the barber's daughter (Indira Varma) embraces herbal medicine and is predictably accused of witchcraft.
Excellent writing, great editing and a commendable cast makes this viewer want to watch the series that preceded it, The Pillars of the Earth.
Kimssi pyoryugi (2009)
Another reason why Korean Filmmakers are the best in the world.
I saw this movie a few days ago and I still can't get it out of my mind. Certain scenes come up and I try to share it with people around me but end up saying 'well, you have to see it for yourself.' Castaway on the Moon shouldn't be compared to Hanks movie. The Hollywood blockbuster can't hold a candle to this gem. Funny, touching, emotional, charming can't begin to describe it. The acting is top notch, the script is perfect, and the directing is outstanding. I was expecting a Hanks rip-off at the beginning, and there are a few similarities, but it soon became its own movie. The set up reminds me of a show from 'This American Life' where a guy was stranded on a small island in Jamaica Bay off the coast of Brooklyn.
Google, "In the Shadow Of the City" and 'This American life' to see.
The second part of the movie, that deals with the female recluse had me riveted in trying to figure out how the two were going to communicate, let alone get together. The journey is worth it and I won't spoil your fun. If you are looking for a good film, a romantic comedy, Castaway on the Moon is it.
Lucky (2011)
Worth watching
Lucky is the kind of film that proves indie movies can hold their own against the studios. This dark comedy is a movie-lovers movie. Well written, superb acting, great directing and a memorable soundtrack make this a fun, if quirky film.
The pace of the movie is good in that it takes it's time to tell the story without unnecessary scenes or long silences. It baffles me that some people find this movie dull of boring. It doesn't have car chases or CGI characters throwing crap at the audience. "Lucky" is not for kids, anyone who think it's dull should find the next 3D IMAX extravaganza to keep their attention.
Hanks is ideal in this role playing a mild mannered serial killer who still lives with his mom (Ann Margret – looking great) with a lifelong crush on Ari Graynor who doesn't give him a second glance until he wins the lottery.
If you like movies like "Heathers", "Fargo" or "Lars and the Real Girl", you'll enjoy "Lucky."
