Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995)
Lost Potential
Hercules wound up falling into the same category as many promising television productions that could have been a really great classic, only to become a sad joke.
I really like Kevin Sorbo and his supporting cast, but I didn't care for the direction the show took since their movie equivalents either. I believe the show would have had a much more successful run if they had kept the same format they did for the movies.
I watched in the beginning and lost interest along the way. I did encounter the odd episode afterwards, but my attention span towards it was lucky to make it to commercial break.
Battlestar Galactica: Sacrifice (2006)
Dumb
This was the very episode that turned me away from the series. I had already felt the quality of the series was beginning to decline as of Season Two, but the way the love triangle type storyline involving Apollo, Billy and "airhead chickie" had been brought about was by far one of the dumbest I had ever seen. Love triangles don't bother me as long they're written with intelligence and perhaps a touch of class, but when it comes across as an uncreative slop (like this particular one) then forget it.
I understand the actor playing Billy was bound for termination anyway, but this was a terrible way to go about it. It felt like this particular episode was thrown together at the last minute by drunk, sleep deprived dolts who should have gone back to whatever school they came from to be re-educated.
Highlander: Two of Hearts (1998)
Highlander but not Highlander
Adrian Paul is the star of the series and yet in this particular episode there is no trace of him nor his character. There isn't even a Methos, Joe Dawson nor any of the other regular faces we had grown used to seeing on a regular basis. Instead, we have an unknown immortal who takes part in a storyline that could have just as easily featured a Duncan MacLeod, even if it was just a minute of him, or at the very least, Joe Dawson. Something.
There was nothing. Mind you, it was a good episode otherwise. Unfortunately, it was with a character that seemed to have no relevance to the main stream ones, other than the fact she was an immortal. Big deal.
When the Highlander series had a spin off, I have to admit I would have much preferred Claudia Christian as the person to lead that spin off series as opposed to Elizabeth Gracen. At least in the spin off series going this route there would have been opportunities to explain what connection, if any, her Katherine character had with the other Highlander characters.
Vanity Fair (2004)
The last half hour was a waste and a disappointment
Throughout the movie I enjoyed myself until it came down to the last half hour or so. I had certain expectations, based on what I had saw from the very beginning of the movie, that were never met. In other words, I expected more.
Some kind of resolve, other than just getting whisked away to India would have been great to see. This was a seriously missed opportunity on behalf of the writers of this script and if it were I in charge of this movie, I certainly would have come up with a much better ending.
I wound up becoming more interested in the supporting characters and their development rather than Reese's. I lost interest with Reese's character when her son was sent off to school. From that point on, I found her a disappointment.
So many golden opportunities within the movie were well laid out, but so many of them were missed or simply overlooked. Unfortunate, because I'm convinced the movie would be so much better, from beginning to end, if the writers had taken advantage of them.
Cold Mountain (2003)
Love & War
When I first went into the theater to see this movie I was expecting it to be more on the more action side of things. Then, as things moved along I realized it was more of a love story than anything else.
But it was great. The roles were perfectly suited for each actor, literally as if Nicole, Jude and Renee were born to play those.
To answer the previous review as to why a movie like this would appeal to the female audience under 18, it's probably because of the romance behind it. Deep down, many of us crave for that "love never dies, conquers all" in our lives and to see it in movie form, and done so well, really hits home.
Macho movie? Kinda, but for both sides of the gender really. In this movie we also see two women take on very strong, independent roles. Again, this may be a reason why the ladies enjoyed the movie so much.
