Hollywoodland (2006)
The seamy underbelly of Hollywood exposed
A film which will stand the test of time and be talked about in 50 years. A true "classic" film noir treatise of the disturbing, romantic and seamy sexuality of both Hollywood and the "Small Screen" focusing on the professional theatrical career of George Reeve's, TV's Superman, and the mysterious and vexing circumstances surrounding his death. Adrian Brodie, Ben Affleck and Diane Lane are a well-balanced ensemble of players put to the task of portraying the Machiavellian world of Hollywood cinema production and the lives of those who try to succeed as actors, producers, talent agents, detectives and policemen. Reminiscent in it's ghastliness of John Houston's "Chinatown" this is a production for the hardened Hollywood film buff and those who are students of American pop culture.
Racehoss (2001)
This is a story of a hurt child growing up to become a violent and angry young man struggling to fit into the harsh life within the penitentiary.
This is a must-see story of incarceration; an unusual glimpse into the severity of penitentiary life. This film is very different from other fine prison stories such as "The Shawshank Redemption", "The Birdman of Alcatraz" or "Papillon". A touching, painful portrait of a black man, son of a prostitute coming of age in pre-WW2 Texas. This amazing performance-art piece documents a troubled youth's matriculation through the brutal and racist Texas Penal System.
This is performance art at it's finest. The stories are well told and amazingly touching, as related to a live audience. Lighting effects, photographic projections and an enjoyable musical score are skillfully orchestrated allowing the viewer to witness the very black and white world of one man's tumultuous life.
To view this film is to intimately experience the desolate lows and violent highs of a troubled man's painful progress.
