The Equalizer 3 (2023)
"Equalizer 3: A Visual Spectacle Dimmed by Its Hero's Implausible Invincibility"
"Equalizer 3" emerges as a cinematic paradox, marrying exquisite cinematography and compelling performances with a narrative that treads the all-too-familiar path of the invincible hero trope. The film's visual storytelling is a feast for the eyes, a testament to the director's meticulous attention to detail and the actors' dedication to their craft.
However, the plot's reliance on clichés undermines its potential, as the protagonist's superhuman prowess borders on the magical, stripping the narrative of any genuine tension or stakes. The absence of struggle or vulnerability in our lead character not only defies believability but also robs the audience of the cathartic payoff that comes from witnessing a hero's triumph over adversity.
In essence, "Equalizer 3" is a film that dazzles and disappoints in equal measure, a reminder that even the most visually stunning movies require a heartbeat that resonates with the human experience to truly endure.
Vivarium (2019)
Allegories? Maybe
I've read some critic reviews that mention that this movie is meant as an allegory or a set of allegories for living in the burbs, for being a family, raising children. This may be. Certainly, if you're aware of the possibility of these allegories, you may see them played out in the movie. But regardless of whether or not they're there, they don't improve this movie. I love the movie premise, the visuals are fantastic, the acting is superb, Unfortunately, the plot doesn't lead anywhere. It's a good sketch of an idea that needs more development, that just isn't there.
Instant Family (2018)
Good on drama, not so much on comedy.
I may be biased because I really don't like Wahlberg's humor, and he is one of the producers on the movie. But yeah, some dramatic moments were very touching, and the story is mostly believable. The humor from the foster agency workers and the other parents was pretty funny too. The movie doesn't throw anything unexpected at you, but the acting is good, especially from Isabela Moner. I would have just preferred someone other than Wahlberg in the dad's role, and a little less silliness.
Boot the Pigeon (2016)
The ratings are definitely off
The characters are likable and the plot is OK. But the production costs were probably $29.99. They use special effects that look like they've been created by a 3rd grader in MS Paint. The dialogue is unnatural because the actors deliver all of their lines without any pause. It's not a horrible movie, but the overwhelmingly positive ratings just have to be fake.
Je T'aime, I Love You Terminal (2010)
Boring from the start
Uninspiring leads and extremely annoying narration.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Beautiful, chaotic, with bad acting from the leads
The movie is visually beautiful and it's worth watching just for that. The plot is a bit all over the place and isn't very interesting, characters are introduced and discarded. There two protagonists are not believable in their roles and there isn't any chemistry between them, even though they're supposed to be in love. But it's a beautiful, easy watch.
